Chapter 1087 This was the Feeling of Falling in Love

Samantha jumped and whipped her head around, spotting Alfred just chilling next to her. "What the heck are you doing here?"

"Need to talk," Alfred said, all serious.

Still trying to calm her racing heart, Samantha took a deep breath. "Alright, spill it."

Alfred glanced at her open video call. "You want me to say this in front of Billy?"

'Wait, Alfred wants a private chat? What's he gonna say? Is he about to confess?' Samantha's heart did a little flip. She quickly told Billy, "Gotta go, talk later."

No way she was letting Billy witness any potential awkwardness.

Samantha put her phone away, trying to play it cool. "Okay, what's up?"

Alfred looked straight at her. "Spent the afternoon with Lykke, trying to see if I could like anyone else. Turns out, I can't. So, I'm sticking to secretly protecting my crush."

'Oh, so no confession then.' Samantha felt a weird mix of relief and disappointment. She couldn't even figure out why she was bummed.

Pushing those thoughts aside, she focused on Alfred. "So, who's your crush?"

'It's you, duh,' Alfred thought.

Right then, Samantha's stomach growled loudly.

Alfred frowned. "You haven't eaten yet?"

He'd seen a delivery guy drop off food at Wesley's place and couldn't figure out why Samantha was still hungry.

"Food was too spicy, couldn't eat much," Samantha explained.

Alfred's frown deepened. "Wesley knows you like sweet stuff. Why'd he get spicy food? Is he that self-centered?"

Seeing Alfred bash Wesley, Samantha jumped to his defense. "Don't blame him. His assistant ordered it."

"Even so, if Wesley really cared, he'd make sure his assistant got you something you'd like," Alfred said, his voice low and serious.

Samantha bit her lip, still trying to defend Wesley. "It's just a small thing. He probably didn't think about it."

'Does Wesley not think about it, or does he just not care?' Alfred wondered. But he knew arguing wouldn't help, so he dropped it. He grabbed Samantha's hand. "Come on."

"Where to?"

"You're hungry, right? I'll cook for you at my place."

The words "let go" died on Samantha's lips.

Remembering the meal Alfred made for her yesterday, she couldn't help but drool a little.

Samantha threw out a bunch of requests, and Alfred just smiled and agreed to all of them.

Watching Alfred's handsome profile, Samantha's heart raced. 'Oh man, am I imagining things? Does Alfred like me? Why else would he do everything I ask?'

"Why are you staring at me? Got something on my face?" Alfred asked, noticing her gaze.

"Why are you so nice to me?" Samantha almost blurted out if he liked her but chickened out at the last second. She didn't want to look like a fool or deal with the fallout if he did like her.

"Because I remember when I was nine, you showed up like an angel. You lit up my life; you're my lighthouse. How could I not be good to you?" Alfred's deep blue eyes were all soft and tender as he looked at Samantha.

That year, he promised himself he'd grow up fast. He wanted to be Samantha's knight, always there to protect her and keep her safe forever.

Alfred's intense, affectionate gaze made Samantha's heart race. 'Why's my heart going nuts? Is this what falling in love feels like? Did I forget I like Wesley?'

Just then, the elevator dinged, reaching the first floor.

Samantha tried to shake off her thoughts. She threw an arm around Alfred's shoulder and stepped into the elevator. "Then you gotta be my best buddy for life and always be good to me."

Alfred didn't want to be just a buddy, but he was down to be good to her forever.

He didn't say much, just hummed in response. Samantha had to stand on her tiptoes to reach him because of the height difference.

Alfred chuckled. "Aren't you tired?"

He didn't wait for an answer and pulled her hand into his arm. "Is this better?"

Holding his arm, Samantha thought they looked like a couple if she leaned her head a bit closer. She caught their reflection in the shiny elevator wall, her eyes flickering before she looked away.

Pretending to fix her hair, Samantha gently pulled her hand from Alfred's arm.

Alfred knew she felt awkward, so he acted like he didn't notice. He waited calmly until the elevator hit the seventeenth floor, then walked out with her.

Outside the building, Wesley, who had followed them, watched as Samantha and Alfred held hands and got into the elevator. His fists clenched tight.

'Excuses, all excuses. Samantha didn't leave because of her family; she left because of Alfred. I thought she was innocent, but she's playing both sides. She says she likes me, but she's all cozy with Alfred. I totally misjudged her.'

Wesley didn't chase after her to ask what she meant. He was scared he'd say something he couldn't take back in his anger.

Maybe Samantha would say they were just friends, that she only saw Alfred as a buddy. But he couldn't handle her having so many guy friends.

Wesley closed his eyes and turned back to his apartment building.

At that moment, Elijah, who had been watching Wesley, stepped out of her place. Seeing his grim face, her eyes lit up. "Wesley, did you go out?"

Wesley, in a foul mood, didn't answer. He unlocked his door and went inside. Elijah followed him in.

Wesley grabbed a beer from the fridge and plopped down on the couch, drinking it. He usually didn't drink because he couldn't handle his liquor. He only drank when he was really upset.

'Did Wesley and Samantha have a fight? Perfect.' Elijah was secretly thrilled. She glanced at the paused TV, then hit the play button.

As the TV conversation resumed, she sat next to Wesley and spoke softly, "What's wrong? Don't drink alone. Tell me what's bothering you."
