Chapter 42 Call me Thomas
<Chapter> Chapter 42 Call me Thomas </Chapter>
In the room downstairs.
Samantha lay next to Aaron, batting her wide eyes as she spoke, "Mr. Thomas, I'm going to school tomorrow, are you going to miss me and the boys? If you do, just look at our pictures, we'll be right back after school."
Aaron felt his heart melt. "Of course, sweetheart," he agreed with a smile.
" Mr. Thomas, can I sleep with you tonight?" Samantha giggled, wrapping her arms around Aaron's arm.
Aaron raised an eyebrow, the corners of his mouth turning upward. "You think your Mommy would be okay with that?"
"We don't have to tell her," she whispered, a mischievous twinkle in her eyes before she closed them.
"Mr. Thomas, I'm getting sleepy. Will you sing me a song?"
"Alright."
At the doorway, Nora paused, pushing the door open, a mix of amusement and exasperation on her face.
Samantha, so smitten with him, huh?
"Sleep tight, my dear sweet child, I’m here to stay by your side."
A man's singing voice floated through the door, warm and magnetic, with a hint of indulgence.
Nora stood quietly outside, picturing the tender look on the man's face as he sang.
Her heart unexpectedly rippled with emotion.
She didn't know how long she stood there until Aaron's serenade came to an end. Only then did she gently push the door open and step inside.
Aaron had just lulled Samantha to sleep. He saw Nora enter and motioned with his hand to keep it down.
Nora glanced at their daughter, asleep and serene, then whispered, "Did she fall asleep?"
"How about a thank-you?" Aaron quirked an eyebrow, a surge of pride in his chest.
Nora's eyes shone with playful mischief. "Shouldn't you be thanking me?"
"For what?"
"For giving you the chance to pick up a new skill. When you become a dad, you'll be prepared, right?" Nora posed the question with a smile.
Aaron paused, his gaze drifting to Samantha nestled against him, and nodded.
"That's true."
He, a big-shot CEO, had learned the art of putting a child to bed!
He really ought to be grateful for the past month's experiences.
Nora watched him, her mind wandering to the future when he would lull his own kids to sleep, stirring an inexplicable feeling in her heart.
Sighing, Nora gently picked up Samantha. "Alright, goodnight."
Aaron frowned, "Nora, Samantha wanted to sleep with me tonight."
"No need. Save that first for your own kid."
His first overnight with a child had already been experienced incidentally with her trio of cuties.
The next morning.
"Rise and shine, darlings!"
Nora opened the door to the children's room, urging the three little ones to wake up.
"Good morning, Mommy," the two boys mumbled, their eyes sleepy as they greeted her.
Samantha sat up, rubbing her large eyes. "Wait, why am I alone again? Wasn't I sleeping with Mr. Thomas?"
"You're more used to your own little bed, so you must have wandered back in your sleep," Nora joked as she helped her change out of her pajamas.
Samantha narrowed her eyes, "Mommy, you're fibbing. You didn't see me, so you must have carried me from Mr. Thomas 's room, right?"
Nora pinched her little nose playfully. "Got me, you little rascal."
Samantha's face fell in dismay. "Mommy, why didn't you let me sleep with Mr. Thomas?"
"Because Mommy was jealous!"
"Don't be jealous, Mommy. Samantha loves you the most."
"Humph, I hardly believe that anymore."
"It's true!"
They chattered and laughed together as Nora assisted her three little ones with their morning routine.
As Nora looked at her little ones all dressed up in their brand-new school uniforms, an aunt's pride spread across her face.
Their crisp blue and white striped attire accentuated the delicate features of the trio's bright eyes and brows.
"My babies are just so beautiful," she thought to herself.
"Alex, Billy, make sure you take good care of your sister at school, okay?" Nora said as she helped them strap on their backpacks.
"We will, Mommy," the brothers chorused in unison.
"Mommy, let's go downstairs!" Samantha, eager to see Aaron, quickly slung on her backpack and dashed down the stairs.
"Ah, my daughter's so outgoing," Nora mused with a chuckle, following the boys down.
By then, Aaron had already wheeled himself out of the room, showing signs of sensation returning to his legs and managing without Nora's support to get out of bed.
"Morning, Mr. Thomas!" Samantha exclaimed, dashing into Aaron's embrace.
Aaron's eyes softened as he idly chatted with his little niece.
After laying out breakfast on the table for everyone, Nora's phone rang just as they were finishing up. She answered with a smile, "Hi, Jack."
On the other end was her senior, Jack.
"Hey, Nora. Are the kids done with breakfast? I'm outside, ready to drive them to school," Jack said.
She swiftly opened the front door, surprised to see Jack himself waiting in the courtyard.
"Jack, you didn't have to do this," Nora exclaimed.
"Well, Jenny couldn't make it to take the little ones to school, so I had to step in," Jack replied with a laugh.
"Give us a sec; we'll be right out," Nora assured him, feeling a warm glow inside.
Jack, her senior and Jenny's older brother, had established a medical research lab focusing on neurological studies. The three of them had grown up together and were very close.
"Kids, Uncle Jack's here to take you to school. Let's hustle out," Nora called out to her excited trio. After bidding Aaron goodbye, they bounced out the door with their backpacks.
Aaron stood at the doorway, his gaze lingering on the man outside the fence. Nora had referred to him as senior—he'd come all this way first thing in the morning?
Outside, the kids were all smiles as they greeted Jack. He stooped down, ruffling their hair before helping them into the car. Standing tall at over six feet with a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, Jack cut a genteel figure.
"Nora, ride with me, I'll drop you back after," Jack offered, holding the passenger door open for her.
After a moment's deliberation, Nora accepted and climbed into the car.
The journey went smoothly with Samantha's bubbly presence filling the car with life.
Jack listened to Samantha's stories about Aaron and couldn't help but glance at Nora. He probably should have gone in to see for himself what the man Nora had rescued looked like.
But Nora's mind was solely on her daughter's rambling, smiling as she listened without a care in the world.
Soon, the car pulled up outside Mont International Kindergarten. It was the morning rush and the streets were bustling with activity near the school.
Jack parked and got out, lifting Samantha into his arms. Nora trailed behind, holding her two sons by the hand.
After dropping the kids off and watching them wave goodbye, Nora felt an emptiness tugging at her. The days of having the kids cling to her were numbered.
"Nora, need a tissue?" Jack half-joked, wrapping an arm loosely around her shoulders, his smile teasing.
Nora, said with playful embarrassment, "Jack, are you making fun of me?"
Jack smiled, wordlessly guiding her toward the car.
That's when Lucas and Becky, with their son, approached them. Lucas's gaze fell on Jack's arm around Nora and a flash of something crossed his eyes.
He stopped in front of them, his words dripping with sarcasm, "Dr. Jack is quite sentimental, isn't he? My discarded trash becomes your treasure."
Lucas had always known that Jack harbored feelings for Nora, even though Jack had never confessed to her. Nora probably thought Jack's affections were more brotherly.
