Chapter 48 Let me try
"Boss, let's cut to the chase. I'm gonna take down this cripple first," grumbled the assailant with the injured leg, knife in hand, charging at Aaron and Nora.
"Nora, get out of the way." Aaron's tone dropped, signaling her to move.
But Nora stood her ground, stepping forward as the man drew near.
Next, like a scene in slow motion, the attacker halted in his tracks and crashed to the ground with a thud.
The other thugs stood frozen, shock written all over their faces.
"What did you just do to him?" barked the leader at Nora.
Without breaking her expression, she coldly replied, "If you don't want to die, get the hell out of my house, now!"
The remaining thugs hesitated, exchanging unsure glances.
The leader's face twisted angrily. "Guys, we can't let her push us around. Are we going to let a woman push us around? Not a chance! Attack!"
At his command, they sprang into action, surrounding the pair.
Nora panicked, realizing her intimidation hadn't worked. She had only managed to subdue that one attacker because he'd let his guard down.
Dodging knives left and right, Nora could barely keep up, let alone worry about Aaron. But out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of two thugs lunging at Aaron, front and back.
Compromised by his injuries, Aaron evaded the frontal assault but was exposed to the sneak attack from behind.
Seeing the knife descending on Aaron, Nora's eyes narrowed, and without a second thought, she dove towards him.
"Thomas, look out!"
Aaron's world shifted under the sudden weight and enveloping scent of a woman.
By the time he gathered his senses, a cry of agony pierced the air.
Nora's figure flashed before him.
He sprang into action, engaging the remaining assailants in a fierce scuffle.
Nora's gaze shot upwards as she saw the man in black, who just a moment ago, had been poised to take Aaron down. His knife now lay on the ground, knocked from his grip.
He clutched at his wrist, a grimace of pain etched across his features.
In the nick of time, Noe had arrived.
Relief washed over Nora as she quickly pushed Aaron to safety.
It was only after watching Noe subdue all five assailants that she let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding.
That was close, too close. Thank god Noe made it in time.
Aaron locked eyes with Nora.
She was the one who protected him first when danger lurked.
“Mr. Gordon, Nora, are you both alright?”
Noe had taken care of the assailants and quickly strode over to them, concern painted across his face.
“I'm fine,” Nora assured him, shaking her head and turning her attention to Aaron.
Aaron averted his gaze from hers, “I'm fine too, Noe. Get them to talk. I want to know who sent them!”
“Yes, sir.”
...
In the high-rise apartment, Martha paced the living room restlessly, anxiously awaiting news.
Becky, slouched on the couch and snuggling a pillow, was fighting off sleep.
“Mom, why haven't we heard anything yet?”
Indeed, the five attackers at Nora's had been hired by Martha. She had paid a hefty sum for their services, opting for a gang at odds with Mr. Wyatt, all to ensure Nora would be taken out without fail!
Glancing at the clock, it was approaching 3 a.m. Why was there still no word?
It was just a fire – it was supposed to be straightforward!
An ominous feeling started to stir within Martha.
She turned to Becky, “Something might have gone wrong, honey. I need to go right now. Take care of yourself.”
The sleepiness vanished from Becky's eyes in an instant.
“Mom, you're leaving? Does that mean something's blown our cover?”
“I'm not sure, but it's best I get out of here first.”
Martha grabbed the suitcase she'd packed earlier, ready to make her exit.
“But Mom, what about me? Who will help me come up with plans now?” Tears glistened in Becky's eyes.
Martha embraced her, her own eyes reflecting a flash of hatred.
“Becky, if Nora isn't dead, go to your mother-in-law for advice. After all, you gave them a grandchild. She'll take your side for the sake of a complete family.”
“Mom, where will you go?” Becky asked, her face the picture of sorrow.
“Becky, I'll get in touch once I'm safe.”
Dragging the suitcase, Martha opened the door intending to flee the country, to lie low until the dust settled.
But her plans were fated to crumble.
The door swung open to reveal several plainclothes officers on her doorstep.
"Miss Martha? You are suspected of premeditated murder. Please come with us."
A thud echoed as Martha's purse fell to the floor, her face turning ashen.
Had her secret been uncovered so swiftly?
This was it—she was done for!
On the second floor, Nora was tucking the three little ones into bed.
Billy and Samantha were still deep in slumber.
Only Alex was awake, his eyes wide in the dim light.
Nora planted a kiss on his cheek, her laughter soothing as she coaxed him to sleep.
With the knowledge that the bad guy had been caught, Alex finally drifted off under the gentle lullabies from Mommy.
Once Alex was sound asleep, Nora quietly left the nursery and descended to the first floor.
There, Noe was making sure Aaron was comfortably in bed, staying by his side.
"Mr. Gordon, I suggest we keep a couple of bodyguards here for your protection," Noe proposed.
The recent scare had been too close for comfort. If he hadn't arrived when he did, the outcome would have been unthinkable.
Aaron murmured, nodding as Nora entered.
"If there's nothing else, I'll head to the station to sort out the incident."
"Alright. Thanks for your help."
"Just doing my job," Noe said before turning to Nora with a slight nod of respect.
Nora had thrown herself in harm's way to protect their CEO at the critical moment—impressive indeed!
After Noe's departure, the house settled into silence.
Nora looked at Aaron. "Thomas, I'm sorry you were almost dragged into today's mess."
She couldn't believe Martha would descend into such madness to hire a hitman.
"Nora, why did you risk your life for me?"
Caught off guard, Nora's eyes flickered as she recalled the events.
"What else? It's all about the money! You're my patient right now, or, to put it directly, my main source of income. If you were harmed under my care, how would I get paid?"
She didn't quite understand her own impulsive reaction at the time. That explanation seemed to suffice.
Aaron chuckled. "Nora, just admit it—you're falling for me, aren't you?"
Nora nearly choked on her own saliva, erupting into a fit of coughs, her cheeks flaming.
Whether it was from the coughing fit or embarrassment was anyone's guess.
"Thomas, I mean, Mr. Gordon, I get that you have the looks and the wealth, the perfect catch that any heiress would want to snag. But don't flatter yourself! I know better than to develop feelings for you."
Not falling for him because she knew better?
"Nora, I give you permission to fall for me," Aaron said with a smirk.
