Chapter 894 Were You Planning to Die Alone
Zephyr took a deep breath and straightened up. He barely suppressed his urge and grabbed the phone from the coffee table.
Seeing the caller ID, his remaining desire vanished.
It was Leonard.
Zephyr's expression turned colder as he answered.
"Hello?"
"Zephyr, where are you?" Leonard's voice had a hint of urgency.
"I'm at home."
Leonard seemed to calm down a bit. "I heard you were kidnapped because of that cop. Is it true?"
Zephyr frowned. "Who told you that?"
"Jeremy, your lab partner. I couldn't reach you, so I asked him," Leonard replied.
So it was Jeremy. He talks too much, Zephyr thought.
He didn't want to discuss it further. "Why are calling?"
"I've told you before, that cop isn't good for you. She almost got you killed. Why don't you break up with her already?" Leonard said.
Zephyr felt annoyed. "Dad, do you have anything else to say? If not, I'm hanging up."
Leonard got angry. "Is this how you talk to me? I'm your father. I care about your well-being."
"I'm hanging up," Zephyr said, ready to end the call.
"Tomorrow is Saturday. Come home for dinner," Leonard said and hung up before Zephyr could respond.
Jane, who was beside him, noticed his unpleasant expression. "Was that your dad?"
"Yeah."
"What did he say?"
"He wants me to break up with you and come home for dinner tomorrow," Zephyr replied.
Jane had expected this. "So, are you going to do as he wishes, break up with me, and marry the rich girl he arranged?"
Zephyr was silent for a moment. "Even if I break up with you, I won't marry the rich girl he arranged."
Jane looked at him. "Are you planning to grow old alone?"
Zephyr didn't respond.
Jane said, "Let me tell you something. Your kidnapping by Matteo might be related to your family, the Wright family."
Zephyr was stunned. "Are you sure?"
"Yes."
Zephyr's expression turned cold. "It was Hubert, wasn't it?"
"Probably," Jane said. "But he's hiding it well. We don't have substantial evidence yet."
Zephyr clenched his fist, his face grim.
Jane looked at him. "Zephyr, you got hurt because of him and even have aftereffects. You must hate him a lot now, right?"
Zephyr didn't speak, but his grim expression said it all.
"Do you want to bring him to justice?" Jane asked.
Zephyr glanced at her. "Tell me, what do you plan to do?"
Jane raised an eyebrow. "Dr. Wright, it seems that you have regained your intelligence?"
Zephyr wasn't in the mood to joke, so he stayed silent.
Jane didn't tease him further. "I resigned. From now on, I'll just be your obedient girlfriend."
Zephyr was stunned. "You resigned? Why?"
"Because I don't want you to worry and be scared in the future."
Zephyr frowned. "Can you be serious?"
Jane laughed. "What do you think?"
Zephyr was silent for a moment. "You want to get close to Hubert as my girlfriend. You didn't really resign; you're going undercover?"
Jane gave a thumbs up. "My boyfriend is indeed smart."
Zephyr wanted to say he wasn't her boyfriend, but considering the situation, he kept quiet.
"Honey, when are we getting married?" Jane asked.
Zephyr looked at his hand. "I'm not in the mood to think about that right now."
Jane nodded. "Alright, I'll give you six months to think it over. If you still haven't figured it out by then, we'll end it."
Her boss gave her six months. She should be able to investigate the Wright family thoroughly by then. If Zephyr still insisted on breaking up, it would mean she couldn't win him over. In that case, Jane wouldn't force it.
"Alright, I'm going to the bathroom. The soup should be ready soon. Get ready to eat."
Zephyr was still thinking about Jane's words. She said she would give him six months to consider. If he couldn't figure it out, they would end it. The thought of their relationship ending made him feel uneasy.
Steadying himself, he got up and went to the kitchen. He needed to settle things with Hubert first.
Zephyr glanced at the dishes on the counter, frowning slightly. The dishes Jane made didn't look very appealing. But they might taste good.
He opened the pot of soup and tasted it, frowning again. 'No seasoning in the soup? So bland.'
Zephyr took out the salt and MSG, preparing to add some seasoning.
"Zephyr, what are you doing?" Jane asked, coming into the kitchen.
"This soup has no flavor. Did you add any seasoning?" Zephyr asked.
"I did," Jane said. "You're injured. You need to eat bland food."
"But it's too bland. Hospital food has more flavor than this soup," Zephyr said, adding a bit of salt and MSG. After tasting it again, he nodded in satisfaction.
Jane didn't mind him and took out the utensils. "Let's eat."
"Okay," Zephyr said, serving the soup.
"Zephyr, I only made three dishes and a soup. Don't be picky," Jane said.
"I won't," Zephyr replied. He usually cooked and ate alone. Now that there was a meal ready, he wouldn't be picky. Even if the dishes didn't look great, at least they tasted good.
Zephyr realized he had overestimated Jane. After they sat at the table, he eagerly took a bite of the dish and immediately frowned. So salty! It felt like he had bitten into a chunk of salt. It was so salty that he started sweating.
Zephyr quickly swallowed the food and drank several sips of soup. He finally understood why Jane made the soup so bland. It was to balance out the salty dishes. When the food was too salty, he could drink some bland soup to rinse his mouth.
"Is it bad?" Jane saw his reaction and knew the food wasn't to his taste.
"It's okay, just a bit salty," Zephyr said, afraid of hurting her feelings.
"Salty?" Jane tasted the dish. "It's not salty at all." She looked innocent, not faking it. Was it his taste buds that had a problem?
