Chapter 405 Question Mark
Nora snapped back to reality and asked, "Was that man just now Chloe's second husband?"
Mrs. Woodhouse entered the villa's front hall with her son, instructing the servant to take him to wash up first.
"Yes, his name is Arthur. He used to be our family's driver. Ever since Chloe fell ill, my in-laws felt sorry for her and allowed her to divorce that rural man and move back home."
"Afterward, Arthur told my in-laws that he had always admired her, willing to take care of her for the rest of his life. Afraid that my in-laws would die and leave Chloe with no one to care for her, they allowed Arthur to come as well."
So that's how it was!
Arthur was quite affectionate and devoted to Chloe.
Nora asked, "He must treat her well, right?"
Mrs. Woodhouse fell silent for a moment before smiling, "How should I say this…? I'm younger and can't comment on what my elders do, but it seemed like he was doing well."
She refused to say more, but Nora thought of Arthur's smiling face and pondered.
If the Woodhouses were ordinary, his actions would undoubtedly be considered true love.
But unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
Did Arthur really want to take care of Chloe because he deeply loved her?
Or was there another reason?
Like gaining more benefits from this marriage!
This raised a question mark.
Nora didn't ask any further and helped Ryan with his treatment.
After the treatment, Ryan was sleepy and started napping.
Mrs. Woodhouse and Nora quietly left the room.
"Mrs. Woodhouse, can you accompany me to Chloe's place?"
Nora recalled she had plans with Chloe earlier and decided to pay her a visit.
Although Chloe wasn't very intelligent, she would surely remember their agreement.
Thus, Nora couldn't break her promise and disappoint her.
Mrs. Woodhouse gladly agreed and accompanied Nora to the small building where Chloe lived.
To accommodate her return, the Woodhouses built a three-story cottage next to the main house for her and Arthur.
When Mrs. Woodhouse took Nora over, it was Arthur who greeted them.
"Sorry, both of you. Chloe is asleep."
Mrs. Woodhouse glanced at Nora, who paused for a moment and asked, "Where's Chloe's room? I'll go take a look at her."
Arthur was surprised, his brow furrowing.
Mrs. Woodhouse's eyes lit up beside them, "Nora, are you planning to treat Chloe?"
Nora replied, "I can give it a try."
Chloe's mental illness wasn't congenital, but rather a result of a car accident combined with depression.
That meant there was a possibility of a cure.
"Nora, thank you for the offer, but it's unnecessary," Arthur hesitated. "I sought numerous renowned doctors in my youth to treat Chloe, but the effects were minimal. I've come to accept her mental illness and, to be honest, she's still lovely this way."
Hearing this, Mrs. Woodhouse smiled, "Maybe you don't know, but Nora is Master Healer Dr. Sun. Other doctors might not be able to help, but perhaps she can?"
Nora was Master Healer Dr. Sun?!
Arthur's gaze flickered, but he remained silent.
Mrs. Woodhouse said to Nora, "Nora, go diagnose Chloe quickly."
Nora nodded and looked at Arthur, "Arthur, can you show me the way?"
He gathered his thoughts and smiled. "Sure. If Chloe's illness could be cured, I'd be overjoyed."
Really?
But why did Nora feel like Arthur wasn't very enthusiastic about Chloe's recovery?
She thought to herself and followed Arthur up to the third floor.
He opened a room that didn't look like the master bedroom, more like a guest room.
However, the decorations inside indicated that Chloe must've been sleeping here all along.
"Is this Chloe's room?" Mrs. Woodhouse asked.
He cleared his throat. "We're getting old, and I snore when I sleep, so Chloe and I normally sleep separately. I wanted her to sleep in the master bedroom, but she insisted on this one. Thus, I had no choice but to let her have it."
The words sounded fine, but it gave off a sense of guilt.
It was as if he had rehearsed in advance, afraid they'd question him.
Nora remained silent, sitting on the edge of the bed and diagnosing Chloe's condition.
Arthur stood quietly on the side, his gaze cold and distant as he watched her.
After a while, she finished her examination and put her hands down.
Mrs. Woodhouse quickly asked, "How is it, Nora? Is there hope for Chloe to recover?"
"I'll give it a try; there's still hope," Nora replied.
She fell silent for a moment and took out her treatment kit.
On the other hand, Arthur's face slightly changed as he quickly intervened, "Nora, are you going to treat Chloe now?"
She glanced at him and asked, "Why not?"
He forced a smile, "It's not that you can't, but Chloe is terrified of pain. Maybe we should ask her if she wants treatment once she wakes up?"
Her face turned cold as she replied, "You want someone mentally challenged to make decisions? That doesn't seem appropriate."
He hurriedly explained, "No, Nora, you've never taken care of a mentally ill person; you don't know how terrifying Chloe's episodes are! If we don't go along with her wishes, she could destroy the entire house."
Hearing this, Nora pondered and put away her needle kit.
"Since that's the case, let's discuss it among yourselves and verify with me whether or not she wants treatment when I return tomorrow."
"Okay," Arthur quickly agreed.
Nora didn't linger any longer and left the room with Mrs. Woodhouse, leaving the small villa.
Watching the two leave, his face instantly darkened.
Nora was very lucky. After being switched for so many years, the Hamiltons actually took her in!
Ahead, Mrs. Woodhouse remained silent for a while before speaking up, "Nora, I'll ask my parents-in-law for their opinions and see what they say. I have a feeling that Arthur doesn't really want Chloe to recover."
Nora felt understood. She looked at Mrs. Woodhouse and asked, "Did you get that feeling, too?"
Mrs. Woodhouse nodded, "Nora, to be honest with you, my husband has mentioned before during our casual conversations that he doesn't like Arthur. He said that Arthur may seem kind on the surface, but he's actually quite scheming."
"I guess he doesn't want Chloe to recover because he's afraid that if she does, she'd divorce him. After all, in terms of family background, appearance, and talent, he's quite mediocre and unworthy of her."
"However, he has been living a prosperous life thanks to our family for all these years. He came from a poor background, but with our support, he has risen in status. Naturally, he wants to maintain this, so he'd want Chloe to remain naive and reliant on him."
Listening to Mrs. Woodhouse's analysis, Nora nodded in agreement. She didn't want to meddle in elders' affairs, but she couldn't help but feel sorry for Chloe. After saying their goodbyes, Nora returned to the villa. At that time, Jacob was earnestly playing chess with Mr. Hamilton Senior. Nora smiled and didn't disturb them. Instead, she went to the basement and found several herbs to make into pills. These pills were good for the mind and had a therapeutic effect on mental illnesses. She decided to coax Chloe into taking them tomorrow.
