Chapter 1010 Maiken's Escape

Frederick showed up with a bag. "Samantha, the kitchen's working on dinner, so I brought some food." He pulled out two bowls and set them on the stone steps.

Alfred's eyes locked on the food, and he swallowed hard.

"Alfred, dig in," Samantha urged.

"Thanks." Alfred smiled gratefully and started eating like he hadn't seen food in days.

Samantha's eyes widened, and she swallowed too. Watching Alfred eat made her hungry.

Alfred ate so fast he started choking. Samantha quickly patted his back. "Slow down, Alfred. No one's taking it from you."

Frederick nudged a bowl of soup toward Alfred. "Have some soup first."

"Yeah, drink some soup," Samantha added.

Alfred smiled and took a few sips. Samantha noticed he wasn't touching the chicken leg. "Why aren't you eating the chicken leg?"

Alfred's eyes lingered on it before he took another bite of bread. "I'm saving it for my mom."

Samantha blinked. "You stole the chicken leg for your mom?"

Alfred nodded. "She needs to eat to stay strong."

"Alfred, you eat it. Uncle Frederick can get more for your mom later," Samantha said.

Alfred looked at her, tears welling up. He quickly looked down and took a big bite of bread.

Frederick watched, feeling pity. He knew what it was like to come from nothing. He'd been bullied as a kid too.

"Here, eat the chicken leg," Samantha said, handing it to Alfred.

Alfred took it and savored every bite like it was the best thing he'd ever tasted.

Just then, Aaron, Hugo, and Walter walked over.

"Daddy!" Samantha ran to Aaron.

Alfred looked panicked, quickly hiding the chicken leg behind his back. Walter frowned at Alfred, clearly displeased.

Aaron caught Samantha. "Is your mom treating a patient?"

"Yeah," Samantha said, glancing at Alfred. "Daddy, Alfred and his mom live in a terrible place. Bad people bully him. They almost drowned him for eating a chicken leg. He's so pitiful."

Aaron listened, his eyes flickering with thought. He glanced at Alfred, sympathy in his eyes.

Just earlier, Astrid had stormed into the living room, yelled at Walter, and then went upstairs. Aaron figured Astrid and Nora had argued, so he asked Hugo what was up.

Hugo filled him in. It turned out, Astrid was mad at Walter because of a child—Walter's illegitimate son, Alfred.

Alfred's mom, Maiken, had fled war-torn Vistalia years ago. Walter took her in. She was beautiful and caught the eye of a male servant who harassed her. To protect herself, she slept with Walter when he was drunk. After that, no one dared to mess with her.

Walter didn't care much for Maiken but enjoyed her company. He made her his mistress, and she soon got pregnant. But Maiken wasn't content. When she was seven months along, Walter went on a business trip, and she was caught with a male servant. Walter was furious and kicked her, causing her to give birth prematurely to Alfred.

Walter had a paternity test done and confirmed Alfred was his. He let them stay but didn't treat them well. Astrid, hating Maiken and Alfred for ruining her marriage, put them in a storage room and treated them harshly. Even the servants bullied them. Walter, feeling guilty towards Astrid and angry at Maiken, turned a blind eye.

Aaron listened, feeling bad for Alfred. The kid was innocent and clearly malnourished.

Inside, Nora had treated Maiken, who slowly woke up, looking confused.

"Awake?" Nora smiled, thinking Maiken might not understand her, and went to open the door.

Seeing Aaron and the others, she said, "Come in."

Alfred rushed in first. Walter hesitated but followed. Aaron joined Nora and glanced inside. "How is she?"

"She seems to have just caught a cold, but she's really weak from not taking care of herself after giving birth and being malnourished," Nora said, looking at Maiken. "If this keeps up, her body will break down."
