Chapter 1109 Did You Suffer Any Loss?
Millie tagged her: [Yo, Samantha, did Wesley really quit the biz on his own? Something go down between you two?]
Billy sent: [What could've happened? Didn't you see those pics online? He was at the gynecology clinic with his assistant. Bet Samantha found out and dumped his sorry ass.]
Alex: [Wesley got something going on with his assistant? The music scene's wild.]
Erin: [It's not just music, man. Every industry’s got its drama. A guy and a girl hanging out every day? Bound to stir up something. Wesley just flunked the test.]
Nora: [Erin's got a point. All that time together, feelings are gonna happen.]
Aaron: [If he caught feelings for his assistant, he should've left Samantha alone. Smart move quitting.]
Nora: [Yeah, but how's Samantha holding up?]
Aaron: [Samantha, if you see this, hit us up.]
Samantha sat on the couch, scrolling through the messages, tears in her eyes. Her family had always shielded her, letting her live carefree until she was nineteen, making her bubbly and cheerful. Wesley was her first real heartbreak. Luckily, her family’s love helped her bounce back quick.
Samantha replied: [I'm good, no need to worry.]
Millie was quick to respond. [Samantha, spill the tea. What’s the deal with you and Wesley? Is it over for real?]
Samantha replied: [Yeah.]
Billy: [Was he cheating?]
Samantha paused, not wanting to dwell on whether Wesley was two-timing. They were done, no point digging it up.
Samantha: [Alright, enough questions. We broke up for good. Don’t go causing trouble for him, or I’ll be pissed.]
The group chat went quiet for a bit.
After a while, Aaron sent: [Did you lose anything?]
Samantha: [Nope.]
Aaron pressed on: [Nothing at all?]
Samantha blinked, thinking of something, her face heating up. Aaron was probably fishing to see if Wesley had taken advantage of her.
Thinking about how they hadn’t even kissed, Samantha bit her lip and typed: [I got played.]
Aaron quickly sent: [What did he do to you?]
Samantha could picture Aaron’s tense face, ready to rip Wesley apart.
Samantha: [Dated him and didn’t even get a kiss. Total rip-off.]
The group chat went silent again.
Meanwhile, Alfred was getting his stuff together for the evening. Seeing Samantha grinning at her phone, he wondered who she was chatting with.
Just then, his phone buzzed. It was a message from Billy. A screenshot of Samantha’s recent words in the group chat.
Billy followed up with another message: [Samantha’s never had her first kiss. If you let someone else get there first, don’t expect to be part of our crew.]
Alfred felt a mix of joy and excitement reading the message. He knew dating usually meant more than just talking. Even if Samantha and Wesley hadn’t gone all the way, they must’ve at least kissed.
But Samantha had told her family that she and Wesley hadn't even kissed. Alfred was both surprised and stoked. What really got to him was Billy's unwavering support, making his eyes a bit misty.
Alfred pulled himself together and replied: [Billy, Samantha said she’s not into dating right now, so we’re just friends again. I don’t wanna push it; I just wanna be there for her.]
Alfred was super grateful for Billy’s backing. He wanted to be Samantha’s boyfriend too, but it wasn’t just about what he wanted. It was all up to Samantha. If she only wanted to be friends, then he’d be her friend for life.
Billy sent: [You knucklehead, she says she doesn’t wanna date, and you just roll with it?]
Alfred replied: [What else can I do? I don’t wanna make her uncomfortable.]
Billy: [I’m not saying you should hound her, but there are ways to win a girl’s heart. Can’t you use a little strategy to make her like you?]
Alfred stared at the message, scratching his head. He sent: [I can’t.]
Alfred only knew how to be unconditionally good to Samantha.
Billy didn’t push it further. [Forget it, I won’t give you bad advice. Anyway, Samantha doesn’t dislike you, so just go with your gut.]
Even though Alfred had hopes, he wasn’t bummed by Billy’s words. [Thanks, Billy.]
Billy: [Thank me when you actually become part of our family.]
Alfred smiled, wondering if he’d really become Samantha’s boyfriend. He didn’t dare to hope too much, fearing that the bigger the hope, the bigger the letdown.
Samantha chatted with her family for a bit and then got a call from Derek.
Since Wesley had announced he was quitting the music scene, the school’s planned collab with him was off. Samantha didn’t need to go to school to practice with Wesley anymore.
Derek was bummed about Wesley leaving and was also fishing for the real scoop on Samantha and Wesley.
Samantha brushed him off with a few words and hung up. After some thought, she went to the study, turned on her computer, and logged into her Facebook: [Best wishes.] She tagged Wesley. This was her way of wishing him well.
In his apartment, Wesley sat in his computer chair, staring blankly at the screen. He was waiting for a message from Samantha. He had made his statement, and he believed she would see it. Finally, he got a response.
Seeing those simple two words, Wesley smiled. As he smiled, his eyes welled up.
He knew Samantha had moved on, so she didn’t call him to ask why he was quitting, and she probably didn’t want to have any more contact with him in the future.
Wesley felt a mix of reluctance and sadness but also relief. Taking a deep breath, he shut down his computer. Even if they would never be together again, he would always keep her image in his mind.
After posting, Samantha shut down her computer. She sat in her chair, thinking, 'What will Wesley do in the future? Will he still sing on the streets? Or will he marry Elijah and live an ordinary life? No matter what he does, I wish him well.'
A knock on the door brought Samantha back to reality. She got up and opened the door. Alfred stood there, holding a plate of fruit.
