Chapter 89 Protecting You
"What kind of staff do you need? I'll find a replacement," Aaron offered.
Howard glanced at Nora, her eyes bright with curiosity, and felt an unexpected jolt.
"No, it's fine. The team can manage without her for a while."
What had he just said?
Wasn't Nora just an herbalist?
Why was he acting as if she was vital to the research team?
After ending the call, Howard informed Nora, "Aaron needs you for a couple of days. I'll post what needs to be done in the group chat. Review it when you can."
Nora blinked.
Who needed her now?
Aaron?
Her phone rang at that moment.
Glancing at it, she saw Aaron's name on the display.
"Come outside, I'm waiting at the hospital entrance."
Was he already there?
Nora was perplexed. "Is there something wrong?"
"I need to go on a business trip for a few days, and I want you to come as my personal assistant."
Nora remained silent.
Ten minutes later, she was seated in Aaron's car.
"Thomas, you want me to accompany you on a business trip? I can't; I got three children at home."
She had never left them since they were born.
Now Aaron was suddenly asking her to travel with him.
"Don't worry about the kids," Aaron reassured her. "I'll have Noe stay behind to take care of them."
Noe quickly added, "Yes, Nora, please rest assured. I'll take good care of the children and make sure they don't so much as lose a hair."
The two had already made their plans.
Nora furrowed her brows, "Thomas, is this trip absolutely necessary?"
Aaron's lips tightened, and he was at a loss for words for a moment.
Noe jumped in, "Nora, we need your help. Even though Mr. Gordon has made a miraculous recovery and has retaken control of Gordon Group, folks are still eyein' his spot, waiting for him to slip up."
"The reason Mr. Gordon needs to hurry on this business trip is that someone is trying to sabotage an important deal he's been working on."
"If he stays, it's what they want. They'll say he's not up to it with his leg and force him out."
Noe's words made Nora Aaron's plight.
Remembering his recent help, she finally nodded in agreement.
"Alright, I'll go with you."
Aaron glanced at her, "Thanks. I'll make sure you're compensated for the trip."
Nora meant to refuse, but thinking of her tight finances, she agreed.
She reasoned it wouldn't harm to be at his beck and call during the trip.
"So I'm to be your personal assistant? I've only ever treated patients."
Noe chuckled, "Nora, you don't have to do anything else. Just take good care of Mr. Gordon."
Nora nodded, "Got it. A personal caretaker."
Noe fell silent.
Personal assistant or caretaker?
"If that's how you see it, it's fine," Aaron said, a trace of amusement on his lips.
Nora pouted, "I've been treating you forever; what's the difference?"
Especially in the beginning, when she was attending to him—it was like being a high-end caretaker!
Aaron shot her a glance but didn't say anything.
He didn't harbor any special feelings for a caretaker and didn't feel he couldn't manage without one!
Nora and Noe returned to the home, where she quickly packed her stuff and her medical kit. Subsequently, Noe instructed a bodyguard to drive them to Bescosarst.
Bescosarst was a neighboring city of Houston.
It took over two hours on the road to get there.
Seated in the back, Nora gazed at the landscape rushing past the window, still somewhat in a daze.
Beside her, Aaron glanced up from his laptop, "We have a long drive ahead of us. Take a rest."
Nora turned to him, noticing he was still busy. She said, "You should rest, Thomas."
"I'm fine," Aaron replied, eyes still on the screen.
Nora persisted, "Weren't you the one who asked me to take care of you? If you don't listen to me, we could have another doctor accompany us."
Her words were laced with a veiled threat.
Aaron closed his laptop with a sigh of resignation, "Alright, I'll listen to you."
"Close your eyes and rest," Nora said, pleased.
Aaron looked at her, "Fine, let's nap."
His words sounded innocent, but the warmth in his gaze as he looked at her made her feel something.
Nora quickly looked away, quelling the flutter in her heart, and closed her eyes to rest.
Time passed, and suddenly, the driver spoke up urgently, "Mr. Gordon, two cars are following us."
At those words, Nora's eyes snapped open.
Aaron's eyes snapped open, too, and both quickly turned to look behind them.
Indeed, two cars were following closely.
One car sped up, positioning themselves to the left of their car, and sideswiped them.
Startled, Nora involuntarily tightened her grip on Aaron's hand, "Thomas, what is that car doing?"
Aaron's handsome face turned stern as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders, quickly assessing the traffic, "Don't worry, I'm here. Frederick, let's take the next exit and use the back roads."
He realized that the two cars were attempting to trap them.
Whoever leaked the project's bottom line pricing realized he would be heading to Bescosarst and had hired thugs to repeat their deadly tactics, aiming for his life!
"Got it."
Frederick floored the accelerator, evading the cars and exiting the freeway.
Nestled in Aaron's embrace, Nora's complexion turned pale, too concerned for her safety to mind their compromising proximity, "Thomas, who have you angered again? I can't die; I have three children to care for. They're already fatherless; they can't lose me too."
Why had she agreed to this trip?
She had forgotten that Aaron's status brought not only nobility but also many enemies.
She couldn't die; she had to be there for her three kids as they grew up!
"Don't worry, even if death comes my way, I'll protect you. The kids won't lose you," Aaron assured her, holding her tight. His voice was cold but imbued with a resolute force that was strangely comforting.
Nora swallowed hard, meeting his gaze. Only then did she realize that she was enveloped in Aaron's embrace.
She shifted slightly, breaking free from his arms.
Aaron glanced at her but said nothing. He pulled out his phone, ready to dial Noe's number to call in some backup. But then he remembered Noe's task – looking after the three children, not to be distracted.
Aaron quickly scrolled past Noe's contact, finding Edric's number instead. He couldn't call Noe.
The call connected almost immediately.
"Hey Aaron, what's up?" Edric's voice was casual and tinged with amusement.
"Edric, where are you? Nora and I are en route to Bescosarst, and we've got a tail – two cars following us. We need help, now," Aaron said urgently.
"What? Got it, send me your location!"
