Chapter 1024 He Wass Still Alive
"Rafael, what else can a laid-back prince do? Enjoy life in the palace with beauties and music, right?" Mateo sneered.
Aaron replied, "Jealous much?"
"Of course," Mateo said. "Who wouldn't prefer a stress-free life?"
Everyone wants a peaceful life, but where there are people, there are conflicts. This world is survival of the fittest.
"Why bring up Rafael? Something happen?" Mateo asked Aaron.
Aaron said, "Johnnie and Gabriella had an accident. Someone followed them and shot at their car. I think it was Rafael. You should check it out."
Mateo's tone turned serious. "If it was Rafael, he's probably retaliating over those confidential documents."
"Probably," Aaron agreed. "Now that you have power and he's sidelined, he might try to take it back. Be careful."
Mateo sighed. "I doubt it. Even though my father stripped his power, he wouldn't kill his own father."
Aaron's eyes flashed with sarcasm. "You think Rafael cares about family when it comes to power?"
Mateo was silent for a moment. "I get it. I'll be more cautious."
"Stay safe," Aaron advised.
"Thanks, Aaron. Say hi to Nora for me," Mateo said. "You stay safe too. If he went after Johnnie and Gabriella, he might come for you and Nora next."
"Got it."
For once, they were serious.
In the ward, Gabriella got up to go to the bathroom.
"Mom, you can go out. I can manage," Gabriella told Thea.
"But..."
"I'm fine."
"I'll be right outside. Call me if you need anything."
"Okay."
After Thea left, Gabriella closed the bathroom door. Looking at her disheveled self in the mirror, her eyes filled with hatred. She took a deep breath and dialed Rafael's number.
The call went through, but no one answered. She called again, and this time it was declined. 'Isn't that an admission? If he wasn't upset, why wouldn't he answer?'
Gabriella sent a message: [Why aren't you answering? I have recordings of our conversations. Are you sure you don't want to talk?]
Rafael finally called back. Gabriella sneered and answered.
"Gabriella, I'm busy. What's up?"
'What an actor,' Gabriella thought. "Rafael, didn't you promise if I got Aaron's documents, you'd make me Miguel's wife? Why haven't you kept your promise?"
Rafael denied it. "Gabriella, don't talk nonsense. When did I ask you to steal documents? I would never do something illegal."
Gabriella sneered. "You won't admit it because you're scared I recorded it, right? Did you ever wonder why I gave you a fake document? Do you really think I did it on purpose?"
Rafael was silent for a moment. "What are you getting at?"
Gabriella said, "The fake document wasn't intentional. Aaron suspected me from the start, so they played along. I never betrayed you. You're just not as sharp as Aaron and Mateo!"
Rafael didn't speak, but his breathing got heavier. He was clearly pissed.
Gabriella continued, "Why did you go after me and Johnnie? You better hope Johnnie's okay. If anything happens to him, I'll make sure you go down with me!"
She hung up. Looking at her red-rimmed eyes in the mirror, she closed her eyes and silently prayed. 'Johnnie, you must come out of surgery safely.'
Johnnie's surgery lasted eight hours before he was finally wheeled out.
Aaron saw Nora come out and quickly went to support her. "Are you okay?"
He was asking about both her and Johnnie.
Nora took off her mask, looking serious. "Johnnie's life is saved, but..."
Aaron's heart sank. "But what?"
Nora said, "Because of the car explosion, he suffered severe head trauma. He's currently blind and deaf."
Aaron's brows furrowed, and his face darkened. "Is there any chance of recovery?"
Nora said, "I can try to treat him, but I can't guarantee the results."
Johnnie was severely injured. If she hadn't performed the surgery herself, his chances of survival would have been slim. Now that his life was saved, it was a small blessing amidst the misfortune. As for the blindness and deafness, it could only be treated slowly.
"Do your best. Don't put too much pressure on yourself. Remember, you're also pregnant," Aaron tried to calm his emotions and advised.
Nora nodded. "I'll go change my clothes first."
"Okay." Aaron waited outside.
After Nora changed, they went to Johnnie's room. His room was right next to Gabriella's. Since Johnnie had no family around, Aaron hired a male nurse to take care of him.
"Aaron, I'm going to check on Gabriella," Nora said.
"Okay, let's go together."
They went to Gabriella's room. She was staring blankly at the ceiling, her eyes unfocused. Yannick had left, leaving Thea to stay with her.
Seeing Nora and Aaron come in, Gabriella's expression became more lively. "Nora, is Johnnie's surgery over?" she struggled to sit up.
"Yes," Nora said.
"How is he? Is he okay?" Gabriella stared intently at Nora.
Nora pressed her lips together. "He's alive."
'He's alive. That's good.' Gabriella breathed a sigh of relief but then sensed something was off. Seeing Nora's serious expression, she asked, "Is he seriously injured?"
Nora didn't intend to hide it and nodded.
Gabriella's heart sank. "How serious? Did he lose an arm or a leg?"
"No," Nora replied.
Gabriella breathed another sigh of relief. "So, did he suffer severe internal injuries?"
