Chapter 106 The Threat to My Life Might Be a Woman
Gayle felt like today was just not his day. He quickly responded, "Mr. Smith, listen to me; it's all a big misunderstanding. I'll explain everything to you later."
"It's not a misunderstanding."
Nora's voice interjected unexpectedly, "Ma'am, there's something I didn't tell you both. I was called out of the hot spring pool by a staff member, but in reality, I ended up in room 308. The air was saturated with a mysterious sedative fragrance from early on. If I hadn't known acupuncture, things might have turned scandalous by now."
Amelia's expression turned even colder upon hearing this.
"I knew my husband never gets blackout drunk at the dinner table to the point where he can't be woken up. So it was you, Mr. Gayle, are you plotting against us?"
Panicked and angry, Gayle retorted, "Amelia, that's just their side of the story. Don't let them turn you against me! Nora, stop slandering me!"
"You know the truth in your heart whether it's slander or not!" Aaron wheeled closer to Nora, his face stoic.
Smith spoke up with a frosty demeanor, "No need for further discussion. I've decided to work with Mr. Gordon. Mr. Gayle, this is goodbye."
With that, he took his wife by the arm, and they both left.
"Mr. Smith, wait! Let me explain!"
Gayle was both anxious and furious, trying to follow, but Frederick blocked his path.
With a chilling half-smile, Aaron suggested, "Mr. Gayle, maybe you should sort out your domestic affairs first."
Those with malicious intentions never end well.
Their angry voices echoed behind them.
Aaron and Nora exchanged glances and quickly caught up with the Smiths.
Once back at the Smiths' residence, Smith immediately signed a letter of intent for collaboration with Aaron, and they left that very night.
After seeing them off, Nora was elated and held out her hand to Aaron.
In quite a good mood himself, Aaron thought she wanted a high five and slapped her hand with vigor.
Nora furrowed her brows. "Why did you hit me?"
"Wasn't it for a celebratory high five?" Aaron asked.
Nora rolled her eyes inwardly. "No, where's my payment? I'm asking for my compensation."
Aaron fell silent.
He had misunderstood!
"How much do you want?"
Nora's eyes sparkled as she playfully demanded a hefty sum. "Thomas, are you letting me name my price? If so, I want ten million. Would you actually give that to me?"
Aaron didn't say a word. He just pulled out a check, filled it out for ten million, and handed it to Nora.
Nora counted the zeros on the check-in disbelief. "Thomas, I was just joking with you. Did you really go ahead and write this?"
Thomas's eyes darkened slightly. "I am your boss; how could I not fulfill a request of yours?"
Nora pushed the check back at him. "This is way too much. You could have just given me a little bonus, like what your company usually offers for secretarial overtime on business trips."
Thomas didn't accept the check. "Keep it. I've never taken back anything once I've given it. Besides, without you, it would have been uncertain whether Smith and I could resume our partnership. This is your deserved compensation."
Pausing to notice Nora's hesitant expression, he said with a smile, "If you think the payment is too much, maybe you can accompany me as my assistant on my next trip."
Hearing this, Nora frowned and thrust the check back into his hands. "Be your assistant again? No way. Traveling with you is far too dangerous."
Thomas raised an eyebrow and put the check back into her pocket. "Since you know it's dangerous to travel with me, would you have the heart to let me face it alone?"
Nora was speechless. "What does that have to do with me?"
"Isn’t it your concern? We have shared a bed; I am your..." Thomas deliberately paused, conveying a meaningful look.
"Thomas, don't spout nonsense. You and I have nothing to do with each other," Nora said, flushed with embarrassment.
Thomas chuckled lightly, "Nora, what are you thinking? I meant that I'm your patient whom you took great pains to save. Don't you want to see me stay well?"
Nora was at a loss for words.
This man is always teasing her!
She glared at him. "Okay, we secured the deal; it's time to head back."
"We haven't bought presents for the kids yet," Thomas pointed out.
Nora hesitated briefly. "Isn't that unnecessary?"
"How can it be? I've taken their mother away for two days; I can't return without gifts for them," Thomas disagreed.
Nora conceded, "Fine, let's just pick out a few toys and leave."
By now, night had fallen.
The city's neon lights glowed vibrant, illuminating the entire landscape.
Thomas looked at the woman's elegant face under the night sky, feeling an inexplicable reluctance to return so soon.
He checked his luxury wristwatch. "It's getting late, and we don't have a ride back. How about we spend one more night here in Bescosarst and have Noe pick us up in the morning?"
They had originally flown in on Mr. Wyatt's private jet.
It wouldn't be appropriate to trouble Mr. Wyatt again, would it?
Considering this, Nora nodded, "That sounds fine."
Just then, her stomach growled with hunger.
Aaron's eyes lighted up with a hint of cheer. "Let's go grab a bite."
"Where should we eat? Head back to the hotel?" Nora inquired.
Aaron glanced outside at the streetscape. "How about we find a unique place to dine out? And we could take a stroll afterward."
He wanted to spend time with her wandering outside, not so eager to return to the hotel just yet.
"That's a great idea; I'll look up some good places nearby."
Nora's eyes sparkled as she pulled out her smartphone to browse for recommendations.
Observing her focused demeanor, Aaron's eyes twinkled with amusement.
Then, his phone rang.
It was Edric on the line.
Aaron answered the call.
"Edric."
"Aaron, with Mr. Wyatt's people's assistance, we've nabbed one of the assailants. It took a bit of persuading, but he's confessed that a man, masked and unidentified to him, paid them in cash to assassinate you. Right before leaving, the man took a call and addressed the caller as 'Madam.'"
Edric relayed the investigation's findings.
Aaron's gaze narrowed, filled with suspicion.
"Do you mean to suggest that the person behind the hit could be a woman?"
The culprits involved in this incident, as well as the previous one that led to his near-fatal fall, were all men—or so it had seemed.
Could it possibly be the same person?
And this person wasn't the mastermind but rather a woman?
"Yes, Aaron, when have you ever crossed a woman?" Edric asked.
Aaron replied, "I'd sure like to know."
In his business dealings, he mostly interacted with men.
Logically, one'd think his enemy would be a man.
He had suspected Caleb was behind it, but now it appeared the situation was far more complicated.
