Chapter 836 A Thief Broke In
In the hotel, Nora felt relaxed after she had talked to Aaron on the phone and knew he would be coming to see her soon.
She was comfortably soaking in the bathtub, feeling a bit drowsy.
Vaguely, she seemed to hear some noise.
Nora's muddled thoughts were suddenly pulled back.
She opened her eyes and listened intently.
The room was very quiet; you could hear a pin drop.
Was she just being overly sensitive?
Nora furrowed her delicate brows. Seeing that she had soaked long enough, she got out of the bathtub.
She put on a white bathrobe and left the bathroom.
She was staying in a deluxe single suite, which was like a small one-bedroom apartment.
It had a bedroom and a living room.
The noise she heard earlier still made Nora cautious, so she checked both the living room and the bedroom.
The living room had a sofa and a coffee table, but nothing seemed suspicious.
Nora then went into the bedroom.
The bed in the bedroom was large, with white sheets and blankets neatly arranged.
Nora lay on the carpet and looked under the bed but found nothing.
She stood up, glanced at the small walk-in closet, and slowly walked over to open the closet door.
Everything inside seemed normal, too.
Nora exhaled lightly, thinking she might have been overthinking.
Just as she was about to close the closet door, Nora suddenly noticed a shadow on the white clothes hanging inside.
Nora's heart skipped a beat, and she instantly felt nervous.
She turned around abruptly and saw a tall figure standing behind her.
There really was an intruder in the room!
Nora's eyes widened, and just as she was about to scream, Mateo covered her mouth and nose.
"Don't scream, don't scream!"
Mateo's voice had a hint of panic and a tone that was not quite like an adult's.
Nora was stunned and stopped struggling.
Looking at Mateo's face up close, she blinked.
Mateo looked very young, about twenty years old.
He had short chestnut hair, deep-set eyes, and delicate features.
He possessed a captivating charm, a blend of cultures evident in his striking appearance.
But his way of speaking was somewhat unusual.
Nora shook her head, indicating she wouldn't scream.
Mateo leaned in closer and whispered, "Ma'am, there are bad people outside chasing me. Please don't make a sound, okay?"
Mateo's voice had a childlike innocence that didn't match his age, suggesting he might have some intellectual issues.
Nora blinked and nodded.
"Then I'll let go. Ma'am, you promise not to make a sound?" Mateo tilted his head, looking a bit silly.
Nora nodded again.
Mateo grinned and let go of her.
Nora, still wary, took a step back.
"Who are you, and how did you get in here?"
Mateo spoke in English, not the local language.
It was strange that a person with intellectual issues could actually communicate fluently in English.
"Ma'am, I'm really not a bad person. There are bad people chasing me, and I came in to hide from them."
Mateo was handsome, but his tone was very childlike.
His voice and appearance together were quite incongruous.
Nora asked, "How did you get in? My room door was closed."
Mateo grinned and pulled out a card-like object from his pocket.
"I learned a new skill, lockpicking."
Nora was surprised and said, "Is this a master key?"
"No, but it can open any room door." Mateo looked proud.
Nora scrutinized him and asked, "Where were you hiding just now?"
"I was hiding behind the curtains. Ma'am, you're so silly. I saw you looking for me." Mateo looked disdainful.
Nora stared at him, feeling something was off.
"Let me see that card."
Upon hearing this, Mateo quickly hid the card behind his back.
"No, you want to steal my stuff. You're just like them, trying to steal my stuff. You're a bad person too!"
Nora said, "I'm not trying to steal your stuff. I'm just curious about what it is."
Mateo looked proud but still shook his head, saying, "It's my invention. I can't let you know."
Nora nodded and said, "Alright, but you don't look well. Do you have a fever? Come here, let me check."
A hint of confusion flashed in Mateo's eyes. He raised his hand to touch his forehead and said, "Do I have a fever?"
Nora grabbed Mateo's wrist and felt his pulse.
Mateo's pulse was strong and healthy, with no abnormalities.
Nora furrowed her brows slightly and looked up into Mateo's beautiful eyes.
She didn't miss the fleeting interest in his eyes.
Nora's expression changed slightly, and she tried to let go of his hand.
But Mateo pulled her into his arms and said, "Ma'am, do you like me? You touched me as soon as we met. My mom said that only people who like each other touch each other. Hmm, I like you too, Ma'am. Since we like each other, I'll marry you."
Nora's face darkened. She forcefully broke free from Mateo's grip and quickly took a step back.
"You're not sick, so stop pretending. Tell me, who are you really?"
She was right; Mateo was perfectly normal.
"Ma'am, I never said I was sick. You did."
Mateo kept feigning innocence on his face.
Nora's expression turned cold, and she said, "Speak properly. You're not intellectually challenged. If you don't tell the truth, I'll call the police."
Mateo looked at her for two seconds, and the previously innocent look in his eyes changed. A wicked smile appeared on his handsome face.
"As expected of the famous Dr. Weaver, your medical skills are impressive, and your insight is sharp."
Mateo actually knew her identity.
Nora looked Mateo up and down.
His clothes didn't show any brand, but the material looked very high-end.
This Mateo was probably not an ordinary person.
Nora looked inquisitive and asked, "Who are you, and what do you want?"
At this moment, the doorbell suddenly rang.
The playful look on Mateo's face instantly disappeared, replaced by a look of vigilance.
"Dr. Smith, I'm not a bad person. I need your help. Please, for the sake of the little bit of Chrisland blood in me, help me hide for a while."
Nora was stunned again. Looking at Mateo's serious expression, she thought of his earlier teasing. Nora's eyes flickered with cunning.
"You need my help, but I don't have to help you. You dared to tease me when you need my help. Maybe you truly are a fool."
Mateo was at a loss for words. Hearing the doorbell ring again, he was momentarily speechless.
Nora glanced at the door and crossed her arms, saying, "If you want my help, apologize."
Mateo nodded readily and apologized, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been so casual."
He was quite adaptable.
Nora was satisfied with his apology.
"Go hide."
She wasn't a saint, but she was curious about Mateo's background.
Who was this Mateo?
What did he need from her?
Nora ran to open the door. Standing outside were the hotel manager and a few people dressed like Hchilia.
"Sorry to bother you, ma'am. Are you satisfied with your accommodation?" the manager asked.
"It's fine. Is there something you need?"
Nora's hair was still a bit wet from her bath, making it look like she had just come out of the bathroom.
