Chapter 278 Take Good Care of Her
Mary swiftly retrieved her phone from her pocket, punching in the familiar digits of Caden Gordon's number. Her heart pounded in her chest as the dial tone echoed in her ear, each ring stretching out into an eternity. Just as she was about to lose hope, the line clicked alive.
"Hello?" A voice echoed from the other end.
"Where on earth have you been, Caden Gordon!" Mary couldn't contain her anger, her words a sharp bark into the receiver.
Caden's voice was laced with irritation as he retorted, "What's your problem? Have you been eating gunpowder or something?"
"I demand to know whose bed you're warming! Return immediately or you'll regret it!" Mary shot back, her voice a venomous hiss.
"You're nothing but a banshee, Mary! Is that all you can think about? I have nothing more to say to you!" Caden's words were a finality, and with that, he ended the call.
In the silence that followed, Mary could faintly discern the sound of an opera playing in the background. It was early morning; where could he possibly be to be listening to an opera? She couldn't shake off the feeling that he was deliberately avoiding her, thinking she lacked an understanding of romance.
Overwhelmed, Mary attempted to redial her husband's number, only to find that he had blocked her. In a fit of rage, she flung her phone onto the floor. Why did both the young and the old have to torment her so?
Meanwhile, at Houston airport, Baldwin, Quinn and his entourage had just arrived. Nora and Aaron were there to meet them, their reunion filled with laughter and light-hearted banter.
"Aaron, aren't you accompanying Nora to Lindwood City? Can you bear to let her move so far away all alone?" Quinn teased Aaron, her eyes twinkling with mischief.
Aaron cast a glance at her, his voice steady as he replied, "Take good care of her for me."
Quinn raised an eyebrow, her voice laced with surprise as she asked, "Why should I take care of your woman?"
He responded calmly, "So now that your sister-in-law is leaving, can't you help me out and take care of her?"
Quinn's laughter filled the air at his words. "This is the first time Aaron's acknowledged me as his sister. I have to step up and take on the responsibility! Don't worry, Aaron, I'll make sure your sister-in-law doesn't lose a single hair!"
Her transition was swift, switching from referring to herself as the little sister to the sister-in-law. Nora was amused by the sudden change, not quite ready to become anyone's sister-in-law just yet, but the warmth of the moment still touched her heart.
"I've been losing a lot of hair lately," she commented, her fingers lightly brushing through her locks.
Quinn was taken aback, having just promised to ensure Nora wouldn't lose a single strand of hair. The new sister-in-law had certainly handed her a formidable challenge!
"Once we get to Lindwood City, I'll get the best anti-hair loss shampoo for you," Quinn promised, her tone determined.
Nora couldn't help but laugh at her earnestness, "Thanks in advance."
Quinn linked arms with her, her smile warm and comforting. "Let's make a deal, sister-in-law. If you still lose hair after using that shampoo, please, don't let Aaron find out, okay?"
Nora chuckled in agreement, "Understood."
Aaron watched the exchange with a soft smile, his hand reaching out to gently stroke Nora's hair. He could tell she was in good spirits, her laughter and banter with Quinn a clear indication.
The gentle voice of Baldwin echoed over the airport PA system, "Time to board."
Aaron's gaze flickered towards the man beside him before shifting to the figure of Hollis, who stood aloofly with a frosty expression etched on her face.
This was Aaron's initial encounter with Hollis and Mary, yet, for reasons unknown, their eyes bore an unfriendly glint upon seeing him.
"Aaron, allow me to introduce you to Baldwin's mother, Mrs. Brown. And this lady here is Mary, who is Mrs. Brown's caretaker," Nora made the introductions.
Acknowledging the introduction, Aaron nodded politely toward Hollis and Mary. However, Hollis offered no response, merely turning her wheelchair and instructing, "Mary, let's go."
With a simple nod of agreement, Mary began to push the wheelchair forward. Aaron watched them depart, his eyes narrowing thoughtfully.
Quinn, noticing his expression, subtly shifted her gaze and took Baldwin's arm, suggesting, "Let's go."
Nora, too, picked up on the undercurrent of tension. Her mother-in-law seemed to harbor some inexplicable dislike towards Aaron. But why?
Before she could delve deeper into her thoughts, the group began to disperse. She turned to Aaron, advising him, "Aaron, you should head back."
His gaze softened at her words, and he gently instructed, "Let me know once you get to Lindwood City. Don't shoulder everything alone; talk to me if there's an issue."
Nora felt a surge of warmth at his words, responding with a simple, "Okay."
Aaron pulled her into an embrace, whispering, "Come back soon."
His longing for her was palpable, even though she hadn't left yet. Nora could sense the reluctance in his voice, a sentiment she found herself sharing. It was reminiscent of a husband bidding farewell to his wife embarking on a business trip.
However, not wanting to succumb to sentimentality, she maintained her composure and gently pushed him away, "Okay, I'm off. You should go back."
Aaron hummed in acknowledgment, smoothing her hair before watching the group disappear into the security checkpoint.
Baldwin, too, was observing their departure. Once they were out of sight, he turned to face Aaron. His gaze flickered, contemplating his mother's attitude towards Aaron.
"Mr. Gordon, I'll be leaving now," he announced.
"Wait," Aaron halted him, his eyes intense. "Baldwin, your mother..."
Baldwin's heart skipped a beat, anxiety flashing in his eyes. He feared Aaron had discovered something. "What about my mother?"
Aaron's eyes narrowed, full of inquiry. "Why so nervous? Is your mother's hostility towards me because of Nora? Does she want Nora to be her daughter-in-law?"
Hearing this, Baldwin breathed a sigh of relief. He looked at Aaron and smiled slightly, "Yes."
"Yes?" A dangerous glint appeared in Aaron's eyes. "Baldwin, I'd advise you not to set your sights on Nora."
Baldwin chuckled, "That depends on whether Mr. Gordon can win Nora over."
Aaron locked eyes with him, "Baldwin, don't you like Quinn?" Baldwin's smile faltered, and he looked away uncomfortably.
"Mr. Gordon, this is my business," he retorted.
Aaron raised an eyebrow slightly, "Baldwin, don't covet things that aren't yours. Appreciate the people around you."
From Baldwin's microexpressions, it was apparent that he had a crush on Quinn. Aaron believed that with Quinn's siren-like beauty and personality, Baldwin would soon be thoroughly under her spell. Well, that's just fine.
Without another word, Aaron turned and walked away. Baldwin watched his retreating figure and let out a small sigh. His gaze drifted to the window, where he saw an airplane taking off.
The image of Quinn, with her alluring, flowery face, flashed in his mind, softening his features instantly. He would have to finish more of his scenes in the next few days, then head over to Lindwood City to find them!
Outside, Aaron left the airport and got into a car. As he watched the plane ascend, he thought for a moment and then took out his phone to make a call. Whether Ebenezer acknowledged Nora as his daughter or not, he needed to be informed that she had gone to Lindwood City. He wanted Ebenezer to look after Nora a bit more.
The call connected quickly. "Aaron here. Uncle, Nora has come to Lindwood City."
At the Ebenezer residence in Lindwood City, Ebenezer sat on his sofa, surprised and excited by the news. "Is Nora coming to seek refuge with me?"
"No," Aaron replied. "There's a medical research project. Her mentor asked her to come over to assist."
"I see. I'll get in touch with her," said Ebenezer.
"Good, then I'm counting on you to take good care of Nora."
"You don't need to tell me. Nora is my daughter; I will take good care of her."
After hanging up, Ebenezer called his assistant. "Is everything you've prepared for me ready?" He planned to transfer several properties into Nora's name.
