Chapter 281 Meet Evella

Sandy weakly tugged at the corner of her mouth, managing a small smile as she murmured her gratitude. "Thanks."

"It's nothing," Nora responded, packing away her silver needle. "You should rest now, Dr. Hernandez. I'll prepare some medication to help cleanse your body of the remaining toxins."

As Nora exited the room, Sandy watched her retreating figure, a faint smile playing on her lips. Was this the unexpected sister-in-law who had appeared out of nowhere? The one who had just saved her life?

Once outside, Nora was greeted by her mentor, his face etched with worry. "Nora, how is Dr. Hernandez?" he asked, his voice trembling with anxiety.

"Rest assured, Professor Lee. Dr. Hernandez's toxins have been purged. She'll be fine. I'm about to prepare some herbal medicine for her," Nora replied, her voice calm and soothing.

Her mentor heaved a sigh of relief, a smile slowly spreading across his face. "We're fortunate to have you here today, Nora. You've averted a disaster. Dr. Hernandez is a renowned member of the Hamilton family in Lindwood City. If anything had happened to her in my lab, I wouldn't have been able to bear the responsibility."

Upon hearing this revelation, Nora's body subtly tensed. Sandy was the daughter-in-law of the Hamilton family? That would mean she was Nora's own sister-in-law. Suddenly, the peculiar glint in Sandy's eyes from their initial encounter made sense; she must have recognized Nora from the outset.

Nora's thoughts whirled, but she didn't allow herself to linger on her conversation with her mentor. Instead, she promptly made her way to the herb storage to gather the necessary ingredients for the medicine she was concocting.

As the medicine neared completion, she decanted it into a pristine bowl, intending to deliver it to Sandy. However, the sudden trill of her phone interrupted her. A quick glance at the caller ID revealed a vaguely familiar number. After a moment of contemplation, she surmised it might be Ebenezer on the line.

Handing the bowl of medicine to a fellow doctor to deliver to Sandy, Nora answered the call.

"Hello?"

"Nora, are you currently in Lindwood City?" inquired the voice on the other end.

A hint of surprise flickered in Nora's eyes. "Yes, how did you know?"

"Aaron informed me. He suggested I keep an eye on you," the voice clarified.

Nora fell silent for a moment. Why was this man interfering?

"Do you need something, or did you call merely to chat?" she queried.

"Nora, are you available this evening? Let's dine together," Ebenezer proposed.

Nora hesitated, not particularly keen on accepting the invitation.

"Unless it's urgent, I'd prefer not to dine."

"I do need to discuss something with you. I'll send you the address shortly, and we can meet there," Ebenezer asserted, speaking hastily to prevent her from refusing. He promptly ended the call after his statement.

Moments later, an address arrived via text.

Nora stared at the message on her phone, her red lips pursing slightly.

She had no desire to interact with her biological father and was at a loss as to why he was attempting to reach out to her.

Stowing away her phone, she navigated her way to the lounge.

The doctor who had just delivered the medication emerged, and Nora inquired, “Did Dr. Hernandez finish her medication?”

“Yes, Dr. Smith.”

“Good.”

With a smile, Nora entered the room.

Sandy was reclining against the headboard on the bed in the lounge.

Taking a seat beside the bed, Nora asked, “Dr. Hernandez, are you feeling any better?”

Sandy nodded, “Much better, thank you, Nora.”

Her voice was still weak, but a soft smile illuminated her eyes.

She clearly recognized Nora now.

Nora returned the warm smile, uncertain of how to proceed with the conversation.

Sandy broke the silence, “You know who I am, correct?”

Nora nodded, “Yes, my mentor informed me, you're the eldest daughter-in-law of the Hamilton family.”

“That’s correct, I'm your sister-in-law.”

As Sandy studied Nora's elegant features, she smiled, “I never imagined my sister-in-law would be the renowned Master Healer Dr. Sun. Now I can brag to my med student friends.”

Despite their initial meeting, Sandy's refined and composed demeanor felt surprisingly comforting to Nora.

“Dr. Hernandez, you should address me by my first name from now on. As you know, I have no intention of acknowledging my family heritage.”

Upon hearing this, Sandy reached out and took Nora's hand.

“Alright, I apologize for the inconvenience. Just call me Sandy.”

Nora nodded in agreement, “Sandy.”

They shared a knowing smile.

Just then, Sandy's phone on the table buzzed.

Nora glanced at it, passed it to Sandy, and noticed it was labeled ‘Honey.’

It was a call from her elusive elder brother.

Sandy picked up the phone, her smile fading slightly.

“Hello?”

“When do you get off work? I’ll come pick you up.”

“There’s no need for you to pick me up; I can get back on my own.”

“Six o'clock. I'll wait for you at the university gate.”

“I said it’s not necessary.”

The call ended abruptly.

Nora observed Sandy's furrowed brows with a hint of curiosity.

"Sandy, was that call from your older brother?"

"Did you two... have a disagreement?"
The eyelids of Sandy drooped ever so slightly, a glimmer of something flickering within her gaze before she quickly regained her usual cool composure. With a swift motion, she shrugged off the blanket that had been draped over her and rose from the bed.

"No," she declared, her voice steady, "I'm okay now. I need to get busy."

Nora blinked in surprise, taken aback by her friend's determination. "Sandy," she protested, her voice filled with concern, "you've just flushed the toxins from your system. You're still weak and need to rest."

"I'm fine," Sandy retorted, her words clipped and final. Without another word, she strode out of the room, leaving Nora alone with her thoughts.

Such a stubborn person, Nora mused to herself, shaking her head slightly.

The sudden chime of her cellphone interrupted her thoughts. She glanced at the screen, a new message lighting up the display. "Nora, I'm on my way. I'll be at the restaurant in twenty minutes." The message was from her father.

Nora rubbed her brow, exhaling a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. She rose from her seat, preparing to leave. "Professor," she called out, "I need to step out for a bit."

Professor Lee glanced at the time, his gaze thoughtful. "Nora," he began, his tone gentle, "since you've come, don't rush off. Research work can't be finished in just a day or two. Let's wrap up for today. Go home and rest up so you can come back fresh tomorrow."

Nora nodded, agreeing with her mentor. She disliked working while tired. "Okay," she conceded, "I'll head out then."

"Okay," Professor Lee responded, returning to his work.

As Nora left the lab, she checked her phone's GPS and prepared to call for a ride. She was so engrossed in her phone that she didn't notice where she was going, and accidentally bumped into someone near the school's athletic field. The person's belongings scattered across the ground.

"I'm so sorry," Nora apologized quickly, "I wasn't watching where I was going." She crouched down to help gather the scattered items.

The other person crouched down as well, hesitating before speaking. "Dr. Smith?"

Nora looked up, surprise flashing across her face as she recognized the speaker. "It's you?" she exclaimed.

"It is, Dr. Smith, you remember me!" Evella sounded excited.

Nora handed her belongings back to her and smiled. "Of course I do, you're Evella." This was the girl she had rescued from Aaron's grip.

"Uh-huh, Dr. Smith, what brings you here?" Evella seemed genuinely happy to see a familiar face.

"My mentor has a lab here; I'm assisting with some medical research," Nora explained.

Evella nodded in understanding. "I see."

"And what about you? How come you're here, did you transfer schools?" Nora asked, her curiosity piqued.

Evella smiled, a hint of bashfulness in her expression. "Sort of. I found my relatives, so I transferred to this school."

So that's how it is, Nora thought to herself, somewhat surprised. She laughed lightly, "Congratulations on finding your family."

"Thank you," Evella responded, her smile widening.

Nora glanced at the time, realizing she needed to leave. "I have to run, got things to do."

Evella caught her arm, halting her. "Wait a second, Dr. Smith, how long will you be staying around here?"
