Chapter 388 Escape

Ross's lips curled into a malicious smirk. "Of course, there are more than just these few. But, Mr. Gordon, have you forgotten that sometimes victory isn't merely about numbers, but also about the cunning of one's mind?" He gestured towards his head, his expression enigmatic and inscrutable.

Aaron cast a sidelong glance at him, his tone stern. "Let's keep things serious."

Ross's chuckle was light as he opened the car door and stepped out into the cool night air. Aaron, following his lead, exited the vehicle. His gaze inadvertently swept across the nearby forest, catching sight of a swift movement. It was reminiscent of a slithering python.

Narrowing his blue eyes, Aaron quickly deduced the truth. It wasn't a python; it was Ross's sizable group of men. "Mr. Gordon, catch," Ross called out, tossing him a gun. Aaron caught it deftly, twisting the handle in his grip. He didn't refuse the weapon. He was about to face some extremely dangerous individuals, so he indeed needed a weapon for self-defense.

Meanwhile, within the confines of a three-story building, Emmeline was far from peaceful. Her forehead was creased in distress, as if she were trapped in a nightmare. In her dream, a python had her in its tight grip, its crimson tongue creeping closer, suffocating her.

She abruptly woke up from the nightmare, her eyes snapping open to the pitch-black room. Only a few rays of moonlight penetrated through the curtains, and gradually, her eyes adjusted to the darkness.

The thunderous snoring of the man next to her filled the room. With a look of disgust on her face, she removed his hand from her body. She then slid out from under the blanket and got out of bed. The man merely smacked his lips and rolled over, continuing his slumber.

Emmeline stared at his figure, her fist clenched. She wished she could stab him to death with a dagger. But she knew that if she killed him, she wouldn't survive either. For the sake of her daughter, she had to endure.

Thinking of her daughter, Emmeline closed her eyes, suppressing the hatred burning in her gaze. She left the bedroom, heading towards her daughter's room. As she moved, a faint noise from the window at the end of the hallway caught her attention. Startled, she froze.

Vaguely, she saw a figure climbing in through the window. The man was lean, and the cold moonlight illuminated the stubble on his face. It was him!

Emmeline's eyes widened as she quickly approached him. "James, what are you doing?" she asked.

James pulled her close, placing a finger on his lips, signaling for her to be quiet. "Keep your voice down. I'm here to take you and Millie away from here."

Emmeline's heart fluttered with surprise and excitement. "James, are you really taking us away from here? But this is Stov's headquarters. Can we really escape?"

James reassured her in a soft voice, "Don't worry, there are people outside waiting for us. We'll definitely be able to leave tonight."

His determined expression filled Emmeline's heart with anticipation. Ever since she was deceived into coming here three years ago, she had dreamed of leaving. Was there finally an opportunity to return home?

"Okay, I'll go get Millie," Emmeline said, suppressing her fluctuating emotions.

James nodded and asked, "Where's the little boy?"

"He should be with Millie," Emmeline replied, walking quickly to the children's room and pushing open the door. At that moment, Billy was sleeping on the carpet in the room, and Millie was sleeping in the children's bed.

James whispered, "Emmeline, you take Millie, I'll take him."

"Okay," Emmeline responded, and the two of them each picked up a child.

Millie continued to sleep soundly, not waking up when her mother lifted her from the bed. Billy, meanwhile, was still groggy from sleep. His body suddenly lifted into the air, startling him awake. He looked at James, who was holding him, with sleepy eyes.

James gestured for silence and whispered, "Don't talk; I'm taking you away from here."

Billy's thoughts were still scattered, and it wasn't until James led him out of the room that he slowly became more alert. It was the bearded man! He actually came to take him away from here! Indeed, he was different from the people here. But could he really take him out?

Billy's mind raced as he watched Emmeline cradle a sleeping Millie by his side. His eyes blinked rapidly, trying to make sense of the situation.

Fleeting images of an earlier conversation overheard in the car plagued his thoughts. Whispers of the bearded man and the lady sharing tender looks.

The lady, he surmised, must have been Millie's Mommy. Was it possible that James intended to take them along as well?

The night was pitch black and eerily silent. The only sound that punctuated the quiet was the echo of their footsteps against the wooden floor. As James held him in his arms, Billy clamped his mouth shut, his heart pounding as they reached the end of the corridor.

"Time to get down, Billy," James said, gently placing the boy on the ground. He picked up a rope from the floor and tied it around Emmeline's waist. "Emmeline, you'll go down first with Millie," he instructed.

Emmeline's eyes instinctively darted to the window, her face draining of color. They were on the third floor, and a fall from this height could result in severe injuries. James, noticing her fear, reassured her softly, "Don't worry, I'm here. Nothing will happen to you or Millie." His bright eyes in the darkness offered her a glimmer of comfort. Taking a deep breath, Emmeline nodded in agreement.

James threw the rope down, securing it to the windowsill before carefully lowering Emmeline. She held her daughter close, her grip on the rope tightening as she descended slowly. Once she was safely on the ground, James scooped up Billy and skillfully descended to the first floor using the rope.

The castle was shrouded in an unsettling quiet. For some reason, tonight it seemed even more silent than usual. Emmeline clutched her daughter tightly, her heart a mix of anticipation and anxiety. Could they truly escape this place unscathed?

Suddenly, Millie stirred in her arms, her sleepy voice calling out for her Mommy.
The sound was startling in the silent night, causing Emmeline's heart to skip a beat. She quickly soothed her daughter, whispering, "Mommy's here, go back to sleep." Millie tried to open her eyes but was too tired, so she nestled her head against her mother and drifted back to sleep. Emmeline let out a sigh of relief.

"James, can we leave now?" she asked.

"Yes," James nodded, offering to take Millie. But Emmeline shook her head, eager to get moving. "No, it's fine. Let's go quickly." She was desperate to leave this place behind.

James nodded, holding Billy close as he led the way. The surroundings were eerily quiet, causing Emmeline's heart to pound in her chest. After a while, she couldn't help but ask, "James, did the backup team come from the outside or inside?"

"They should have arrived by now," James replied.

"But how did they get in?" Emmeline asked, aware that the castle was heavily guarded. Even at night, patrols were frequent.

"I drugged the guards' snacks during tonight's patrol," James explained. "They're all fast asleep. The castle is like an empty city, so the backup team could easily slip in without any trouble."

Emmeline's heart raced with excitement. She held her daughter tighter, desperate to escape this prison and return home as soon as possible. But before they could get far, a voice rang out from behind them.

"Stop! Who goes there?"
