Chapter 52 You Want Me to Sleep with You
<Chapter>Chapter 52 Stay(2) </Chapter>
At the hospital, Eleanor was rushed into the emergency room, and Lucas hurried in.
"Becky, what happened? How could Mom just collapse out of nowhere?"
Becky pointed an accusing finger at Nora. "Lucas, it's all her fault! Mom was trying to meet with her to discuss your divorce. She had the audacity to ask for a fortune—an entire billion! When Mom argued with her, she just snapped back with such a nasty attitude that it literally knocked Mom out!"
Lucas' eyes swelled with fury as he turned to Nora. "If anything happens to Mom, I'll never forgive you, Nora."
Nora stood silently, not uttering a word.
In that moment, a doctor emerged from the OR. It was Madam Gordon's former primary physician.
Lucas hurried over. "Dr. Hall, how's my mother's condition?"
The doctor looked at him gravely. "Mr. Lucas, your mom has a family history of heart disease and she's just suffered a stroke. It's quite serious. The only person qualified to operate right now is Chief Surgeon Jacob, but, unfortunately, he's out today attending a conference and isn't in the hospital."
Lucas paled upon hearing this.
"Dr. Hall, you must find a way to save my mom," he pleaded.
The doctor shook his head. "I'm not going to hide it—her stroke on top of her heart condition is knocking on death's door. It's already a miracle she's held on this long." He had just examined her and couldn't help wondering. It seemed as if someone had already been treating her; otherwise, she wouldn’t have lasted until now.
Lucas felt a sinking feeling in his heart.
Becky, with shifty eyes, glared at Nora. "This is because of you, Nora! If my mother-in-law dies because of you, we'll make sure you pay with your life!"
Lucas's eyes reddened with rage. "Nora!"
"Let me try," Nora suddenly said.
Lucas, caught off guard, stuttered, "What did you say?"
"I can perform the surgery," Nora replied with a clear gaze.
Lucas was stunned. Before he could respond, Becky let out a snort of contempt.
"Nora, do you think surgery is like selling lemonade at a stand—that just anyone can do it?"
Nora ignored her mockery and glanced at the time.
"Lucas, don't forget, I was trained in medicine, too. Your mom is racing against time. Since the doctor for the job isn't here, are you willing to trust me just this once?"
Should he trust her?
Lucas, remembering the medical awards Nora had earned back in school, hesitated for a moment. And in the silence, Becky watched, a glint of uncertain intent in her eyes.
"Nora, are you feeling guilty? Is that why you're insisting on performing the surgery on my mother? You think because of her chronic illness, if she passes away on the operating table, it would be considered 'normal,' right? And you believe Lucas, seeing your efforts, won't hold it against you afterward!"
Nora cast a glance her way, "My conscience is clear. Let me ask you again, are you willing to trust me this time?"
Her demeanor was cool and ethereal, seemingly unapproachable, yet it somehow inspired a desire to place faith in her.
Lucas looked at her and finally, with some apprehension, nodded his agreement.
"Nora, you volunteered for this. If my mom doesn't make it through your treatment, I'll never forgive you."
Nora said nothing, simply pulled out her cellphone, and dialed Jack's number swiftly.
"Hey, Jack, are you free right now? I'm at Central Hospital, and I need your cooperation for a surgery."
Jack, a neurology specialist with a knack for treating cerebrovascular conditions, was her go-to for complicated cases.
"Nora, I'm already on my way to Central Hospital. I'll be there in five."
"Great, I'll meet you in the OR."
Hanging up the phone, Nora faced the doctor, "Dr. Hall, I'm assisting Jack today, we'll work in tandem."
She preferred not to reveal her true identity as Dr. Sun.
Jack had been recently collaborating with Central Hospital on a research project, so the staff were acquainted with him.
Thus, she chose to enter the OR under the guise of being Jack's assistant.
Dr. Hall nodded to her, signaling her to follow him into the OR.
Becky sneered as she watched Nora's retreating figure, "So she's calling backup. And here I actually thought she had real skills."
Lucas remained silent, eyes fixated on the OR light, overwhelmed with anxiety.
Nora entered the OR, suited up in sterile garb, and began her pre-op preparations.
Before long, Jack arrived.
"Nora, what's the patient's status?"
She briefed him on the situation in detail.
Jack listened as he donned his own surgical attire, then started his own pre-op routine.
Time ticked by, and Lucas paced the hallway, glancing anxiously at his watch.
Two hours passed, then three, and now four!
Finally, the doors to the OR opened.
Nora and Jack stepped out.
Lucas moved swiftly towards Nora, trying to reach her.
But Jack stepped in front of him, an icy resolve in his eyes stopping Lucas in his tracks.
"Nora, how's my mom?"
Nora removed her mask, her voice low and steady, " She's stable now. We'll just need routine follow-up checks."
Lucas's eyes brightened, yet skepticism flickered across his face. "Nora, what do you mean 'it's alright'? My mom has had this chronic illness for years. Are you saying it's cured?"
"Yep," Nora replied with muted simplicity.
Lucas's emotions surged as he gazed at her, his expression complex.
Becky, standing close by, felt a twinge of anxiety. "Nora, whom are you trying to fool? My mother-in-law's condition is chronic. We've seen countless doctors, and none could assure a complete cure. How did you manage it?"
Nora's voice remained even-keeled, "It wasn't me alone. It's thanks to Jack and Dr. Hall's collaboration."
Jack glanced at her, then pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose.
He wouldn't dare take all the credit.
After all, Nora had already instructed the team of doctors that in today’s surgery, she was merely assisting.
"Of course, Dr. Hall, thank you for saving my mother!"
Becky's heart eased inexplicably, as she expressed her gratitude to Dr. Hall.
Dr. Hall smiled awkwardly, casting a glance at the serene Nora and mumbled an ambiguous response.
Today's surgery was like unearthing a treasure, and Miss Smith's treatment was nothing short of breathtaking!
" Let's go, Jack," Nora said, ready to leave now that the issue was settled.
"Sure," Jack responded.
"Thank goodness my mother-in-law's life was saved, Nora. Otherwise, Lucas and I would never have let you off the hook. Lucas, let's go see mom in the ward," Becky quickly added, noticing Lucas's fixed gaze on Nora.
Lucas remained silent, watching their departing figures before turning toward the hospital room.
Ahead, Jack pressed the elevator button. "Nora, must be exhausted, huh?"
"I'm okay."
"Your skills seem to have sharpened."
Nora lifted an eyebrow playfully, "Well, I guess having a test subject has its perks."
The live-in 'test subject': Aaron.
Jack chuckled lightly.
Suddenly, Nora added, "Oh, right, Jack, would you mind helping me find a new place?"
