Chapter 289 The Continuation

Sandy sealed her eyes shut, determinedly keeping her thoughts at bay.

The clamor from the bathroom soon came to a halt.

The soft patter of footsteps drew nearer, followed by a noticeable dip in the bed beside her.

Sandy was well aware that it was Kenneth, fresh from his shower and settling into bed.

Her fingers tightened into fists beneath the blanket.

The unmistakable scent of masculinity enveloped her, and without needing to open her eyes, she could sense the potent male pheromones.

Her eyelids fluttered anxiously.

She was too on edge to draw a breath.

"Are you asleep?" a deep, compelling voice inquired.

Caught in her nervousness, Sandy murmured a response unintentionally.

A deep chuckle resonated from Kenneth's chest, "Then shall I meet you in your dreams?" His tone was playful, and Sandy couldn't help but respond with a half-smile, her tension easing slightly at his distraction.

Her eyelashes fluttered gently as she gradually opened her eyes to behold Kenneth's warm, smiling countenance. His handsome features seemed even more striking up close. His mood was noticeably lighter, making him seem less distant and more approachable than usual.

Sandy's heart pounded in her chest. She bit her lip and averted her gaze.

Her lip-biting gesture conveyed a delicate shyness, which only seemed to fuel Kenneth's interest. His eyes darkened slightly as he gently grasped her petite chin, his voice a touch husky, "Nervous?" he queried.

Sandy couldn't muster the courage to meet his gaze and softly hummed her affirmation.

A slight smile tugged at Kenneth's lips. "Don't be scared. I'll be gentle," he reassured her.

Sandy remained silent, her body rigid with tension.

Kenneth studied her beautiful face, leaning in slowly to plant a gentle kiss on her lips. Despite the fervent desire raging within him, he restrained himself, allowing her to gradually relax.

It was only when she finally loosened up that he undressed her completely, and they became one.

Sandy kept her eyes shut tight, and when a sharp twinge coursed through her, she couldn't suppress a low moan, sinking her teeth into the man's shoulder.

A lone tear trickled down from the corner of her eye, and she sobbed. In that moment, she transitioned from a girl to a woman. It was time to leave her past behind.

Tears continued to stream down her cheeks, their origin - pain or discomfort - unclear.

The following day, Nora headed to the lab as usual.

In the changing room, she encountered Sandy getting dressed.

"Morning, Sandy," she greeted.

"Morning," Sandy responded with a smile.

As Nora shrugged off her coat, she noticed Sandy's appearance. "You've got some serious dark circles. Did you sleep okay?"

Sandy's eyes flickered, and she mumbled a vague acknowledgment. The previous night, Kenneth had thoroughly worn her out, and she had barely managed to get up that morning. Her cheeks flushed at the memory of the man's assertive claim over her, and she awkwardly adjusted her hair.

Nora, now clad in her white lab coat, unintentionally caught sight of the hickey on Sandy's neck. Having had similar experiences, she instantly understood.

No wonder her sister-in-law seemed a bit off. She must have been exhausted by her brother.
Had the two reconciled?

"Nora, I'm sorry about yesterday, I forgot to introduce you to your brother," Sandy said apologetically.

Nora smiled, "It's okay, just seeing what my brother looks like was enough."

Sandy remarked, "The folks from the Hamilton family are all pretty good-looking."

"Yeah, you and my brother make a good match," Nora said with a grin.

Sandy, a woman of few words, simply smiled in response to that comment.

Nora recalled running into Zephyr the previous day and mentioned it hesitantly, "Sandy, it looks like there's a girl who resembles you. Otherwise, that guy wouldn't have mistaken you for her."
Upon hearing the news, a slight tension gripped Sandy's fingers.

"I've got to get to work," she responded curtly, her tone making it clear that she had no desire to continue the conversation.

Nora, taking the hint, didn't press further and instead immersed herself in her work.

As the clock struck noon, a message from Evella popped up on Nora's screen, an invitation to lunch. Nora's thoughts immediately went to her older brother. She hesitated for a moment, but ultimately decided to accept the invitation. After all, the chances of her brother showing up and causing a scene were slim, weren't they?

"I'm heading out for lunch, Sandy," Nora announced, moving to change her clothes.

"Where are you eating?" Sandy inquired.

"The cafeteria."

"Let's go together."

Nora shrugged off her lab coat, figuring Evella wouldn't mind an extra lunch companion. With a nod of agreement, the two set off for the cafeteria together.

Upon arrival, they found Evella already seated at their usual spot, a spread of food laid out before her.

"Evella, let me introduce you. This is my colleague, Sandy. Sandy, this is..." Nora began, only to be interrupted by Sandy.

"The long-lost daughter of the Remington family, right?" Sandy chimed in, a smile playing on her lips.

Evella blinked in surprise. "Dr. Hernandez, you know me?"

Sandy replied with a grin, "Mrs. Remington wanted to arrange a marriage with the Hamilton family, so my mother-in-law received your photo, and I saw it too."

Evella was initially taken aback, then realization dawned. "You're the eldest daughter-in-law of the Hamilton family?"

Sandy nodded in confirmation. Evella's expression shifted to one of unease. "Seriously, grandma is matchmaking again without my consent. I don't want to marry a man who's full of himself."

The man she referred to was Howard.

Sandy chuckled softly, "My brother-in-law is alright. He's pretty easygoing."

But it was clear her mother-in-law didn't share the sentiment. After all, Evella’s background had its flaws. Despite her respectable family lineage, her genetics bore the mark of a criminal.

"That must be an act," Evella muttered, her face twisting into a grimace. She held nothing but disdain for Howard.

Nora listened to their conversation, her eyes widening in surprise. Howard was Sandy's brother-in-law? So the Remington family intended to marry Evella to Howard? What an odd twist of fate!

"You two go ahead and start. I'll go buy some more food," Evella said, standing up. She hadn't anticipated Nora bringing an additional guest, and thus only had enough food for two.

"Maybe I should go?" Sandy offered, rising from her seat.

"No worries, Doctor Hernandez. Please, sit down and enjoy your meal with Nora." Evella handed her own utensils to her, then went to get more food.

Sandy commented with a smile, "The young lady is quite industrious."

Nora looked at her, "Seems like you've taken a liking to Evella?"

"Yes, I really have," Sandy replied, her smile unwavering.

Nora teased her, "If Evella could marry into the Hamilton family, you and your sister-in-law will probably get along great in the future."

Sandy just smiled, saying nothing. Her mother-in-law wasn't satisfied, and her brother-in-law was strongly against it. She doubted this marriage would happen.

They started their meal, and shortly after, a male voice called out.

"Nora."

Nora looked up to see Gary approaching with a bouquet of flowers in hand. He's back! He wasn't actually pursuing her, was he? And he even changed what he called her! Hadn't Evella talked to him about persuading him otherwise? Nora was internally complaining.

As Gary sat across from her, placing the bouquet aside, she said, “Mr. Remington, I told you, I have a boyfriend."

Gary settled in, "And I've told you, I'm willing to compete fairly for you."

Nora was left speechless.
