Chapter 389 Daddy's Here

Emmeline's heart skipped a beat, and she instinctively leaned toward James, her arms wrapped protectively around her daughter.
"James, what do we do?" she whispered urgently. "Someone's here; it must be one of the guards stationed outside the building for Stov's team."
James' face hardened, but his voice remained soft and reassuring. "Don't be afraid, I'll handle it."

Turning to confront the approaching figure, James positioned himself between the armed man and Emmeline, effectively shielding her. The man was indeed one of the guards stationed outside the building. He had been drawn by the commotion and had come to investigate.

Upon recognizing James, he furrowed his brow in confusion. "Oh, it's you, James. What are you doing? Why are you holding this child? And who's that behind you?"

James maintained his composure, responding smoothly, "Brother, this child came down with a high fever in the middle of the night, and Miss here got sick too. Stov asked me to take them to the hospital." His expression remained unchanged as he spun his lie. The guard looked skeptical, "Miss got sick too?"

"Yeah, if you don't believe me, come and see for yourself. She's burning up and unconscious," James replied, setting the child named Billy on the ground with a calm demeanor.

The guard cautiously approached, peering past James to get a better look at Emmeline. Her heart pounded in her chest as she clung to her daughter, remaining silent.

As the guard drew closer, a cold glint flashed in James' eyes. Swiftly, he seized the guard's neck and twisted. The guard let out a strangled cry, his eyes rolling back in his head before he fell silent.

Billy, witnessing a death for the first time, turned ashen, frozen in place. Emmeline tightened her hold on her daughter and reached out to shield Billy from the sight, her body serving as a barrier.

"Don't be scared; it's all over now," she murmured, her voice as soothing as a gentle stream. The sound reminded Billy of his mother, and he struggled to hold back tears of fear.

"I'm not scared; I'm a brave little man," he insisted, his voice wavering.

Emmeline released him, looking at the little boy who was trying so hard to appear brave. She gently patted his head, offering him a comforting smile. "Good boy."

After disposing of the guard, James scooped up Billy and took Emmeline by the hand. "We need to move quickly," he urged. If they could just cross the space ahead, they could finally escape this castle and start anew.

Emmeline nodded in agreement, equally eager. They set off at a brisk pace, their hearts filled with hope.

However, the sting of disappointment was as swift as it was agonizing. Another guard, stationed in front of a nearby building, noticed his companion's absence and grew suspicious. Following his instincts, he went to investigate.

Upon discovering his fallen comrade, he was taken aback. In his shock, he fired a shot into the sky. The gunshot echoed through the castle, rousing everyone from their slumber, including Stov. Soon, the castle was ablaze with light.

"Stop, raise your hands, or I'll shoot!" The guard aimed his gun at James. James' expression shifted subtly as he set Billy down, raised his hands, and slowly turned to position himself between the guard and Emmeline. Billy, terrified, hid behind James.

Emmeline, witnessing this scene, felt a wave of panic wash over her, causing her body to tremble slightly. "James, what should we do? Weren't there people here to help? Where are they? Why haven't they appeared yet?" she whispered frantically.

James said, "They have their arrangements. All I know is that I have to get you out first." He was so close to success.

"It's you! James, you killed him!" The guard recognized James and accused him angrily. James remained silent, biding his time.

The guard approached James, his gun aimed at his chest. "Speak! Did you kill him!" he demanded. The dark muzzle of the gun exuded a deadly aura. Emmeline's face drained of color, and she hurriedly stepped in front of James. "Don't shoot!"

The guard was taken aback, and upon recognizing Emmeline, a look of shock crossed his face. "Madam, is that you?" He glanced at Billy, "Are you and James planning to escape with this child without Mr. Stov's knowledge?"

Emmeline bit her lip, about to respond, when suddenly, a loud explosion echoed in the distance, followed by a blaze and thick smoke. James narrowed his eyes, a smirk playing on his lips. The weapons depot had been detonated, destroying all the weapons inside. It seemed Ross's operation had begun!

The guard, sensing something was amiss, turned to look at the fire in the distance. Seizing the opportunity, James lunged at the guard, attempting to disarm him. However, the guard was quick to react, and a struggle ensued.
The sharp report of two gunshots echoed through the air. Emmeline, her heart pounding with terror, clutched her daughter close, crouching low and cradling Billy in her arms.

Millie, who had been sleeping, was jolted awake by the harsh noise. Her voice, groggy and confused, broke the tense silence. "Mommy, is it raining? I heard thunder."

Emmeline held her daughter tighter, swallowed hard, forced a smile onto her face, but found no words to answer her.

Just then, Aaron burst onto the scene, a group of people trailing in his wake. "Billy!"

The voice belonged to Uncle Gordon. The familiar sound sparked a glimmer of hope in Billy's eyes, and he immediately scampered towards the source with his small, unsteady legs. "Uncle Gordon!"

Aaron swiftly scooped him up into his arms. "Is everything alright?" Billy shook his head, "I'm fine." Relief washed over him; Uncle Gordon had come to his rescue.

"Great! Great!" Aaron's heart, previously aflutter with anxiety, settled a little at the sight of the unharmed boy. His gaze swept over Emmeline and her daughter, then landed on the two men locked in combat. He squinted, his blue eyes reflecting uncertainty as he tried to discern which of the two was Ross' contact.

Emmeline, still clutching her daughter, rose to her feet, her attention not on Aaron but on the dueling men, her eyes brimming with worry.

Then, a loud bang echoed, and the soldier who had been grappling with James ceased his movements.

James, gasping for breath, shoved the soldier away and staggered towards Emmeline, reaching out to envelop her in his arms. "Don't be afraid, it's over now."

Emmeline swallowed hard and asked, "Is he dead?"

"Yeah," James confirmed.

Billy, watching the exchange, turned to Aaron and said, "Uncle Gordon, this uncle is a good person. He saved me." Aaron nodded, understanding that this man must be Ross' contact.

"I suppose you are Mr. James; I'm Aaron," he introduced himself.

James released Emmeline and offered a slight nod to Aaron. "Let's talk outside." Aaron agreed, his thoughts mirroring James', and he carried Billy out. James, with Emmeline in his arms, followed.

Emmeline stumbled, her nerves getting the better of her. James quickly steadied her. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," Emmeline assured him, shaking her head.

"I'll hold Millie then," James offered. Emmeline hesitated for a moment, but James had already taken Millie into his arms. "Millie, let Uncle James carry you."

Millie, still somewhat bewildered, looked around. "Mommy, what are we doing?"

Emmeline curled her finger, "Mommy is taking you home."

Millie blinked, pointing at a small building not far away with confusion. "Isn't our home there?"

"That's not our home, it's a prison!" A strong hatred flashed in Emmeline's eyes.
Still in a daze, Millie shouted when she saw someone running towards them from a distance, "Mommy, Daddy's here! Daddy!"
