Chapter 547 He Bears It All Alone

Initially, Alex found it hard to accept this situation. He never imagined that a casual action on his part would lead to such trouble.

Nora and Aaron were deeply in love, and Nora certainly couldn't marry Matthew.

But Matthew's demand for him to become the Jones family's live-in son-in-law left him feeling helpless.

Alex was still so young, yet his life was being decided by others. It was laughable.

However, Matthew's attitude was firm, and Alex didn't want to see everyone arguing because of him.

Alex made up his mind. He was willing to become the Jones family's live-in son-in-law. Ultimately, he caused all this trouble and would bear it all alone.

"Good boy. I knew you were a good boy," Matthew praised Alex.

Aaron cast a cold glance at Matthew, then looked at Alex.

He said, "Alex, if you think Erin is pitiful, we can take her back with us and let Nora take care of her. You don't have to stay."

Alex shook his head and replied, "Uncle Aaron, I've decided to stay. You should go back and take care of my mommy and my siblings."

Though Alex's face was still youthful, it carried a maturity beyond his years. Aaron felt a pang of sadness.

Aaron asked, "Alex, do you know what you're saying? If you stay here, you won't see your siblings and mommy anymore. Won't you miss them?"

Matthew interjected at the right moment, "Not necessarily. As long as Dr. Hamilton wants to, she can visit Alex anytime. If she doesn't want to be separated from Alex, she can stay here. I'm more than happy."

Aaron glared at Matthew, and said angrily, "Matthew, you're talking nonsense!"

Matthew laughed indifferently, and said, "Mr. Gordon, you can scold me, but I won't retaliate. However, let's not fight. We're both gentlemen. Besides, my bodyguards are very skilled; you probably can't beat them."

Aaron said, "You..."

"Uncle Aaron, don't be impulsive," Alex quickly held Aaron's hand, trying to calm him down as he saw Aaron getting angry again.

Aaron forced himself to calm down, squatting down to Alex's level. "Alex, you don't have to be afraid of him. Nora is waiting for us at home. I will take you back safely," he pleaded.

Alex said, "Uncle Aaron, I really am staying voluntarily. There's something I need to confess. Actually, this whole mess is my fault."

Alex explained how he had made Nora pretend to be a hacker. Aaron frowned, feeling a bit speechless. He hadn't known about this. Alex had really tangled with the wrong person.

"Alex, this isn't your fault. Some people are just bad, and we shouldn't obey them," Aaron said.

Alex shook his head, and insisted, "No one is at fault. Uncle Aaron, I really want to stay."

"But..." Aaron wanted to say more but was interrupted.

Matthew laughed, and said, "Alex truly is Dr. Hamilton's son, so responsible."

Aaron was furious. He remarked, "Matthew, you're despicable."

Matthew chuckled, unfazed, and asked Alex, "Alex, since you've decided, do you want to tell Nora yourself, or should I?"

Alex replied, "I'll tell her."

Alex took out his phone and dialed Nora's video call.

At that moment, Nora was pacing in her bedroom, very anxious. When she saw Alex's video call request, her eyes brightened, and she quickly answered.

"Alex, where are you now?" Nora asked, anxiously.

"Mommy, I'm at Uncle Matthew's house," Alex said.

"Is Aaron with you?" Nora asked.

"Yes, he is," Alex replied.

Alex turned the camera slightly towards Aaron, showing Nora Aaron's grim face. She was very worried, not knowing how their conversation had gone.

"Alex, are you and Uncle Aaron coming back?" Nora asked.

"Mommy, I've decided to stay," Alex said.

Nora was shocked, and asked, "Why?"

Alex answered, "Because I want to stay with Erin."

Nora frowned. "Is that the only reason?" she questioned.

Alex replied, "And also because I know you owe Uncle Matthew a favor. As your son, I'll repay the debt for you."

Alex's young voice was steady and mature. Nora felt a deep sadness. Alex was so understanding!

"Alex, I don't need you to help me. Can you let me think about it?" Nora pleaded.

Alex said, "Mommy, there's no need. Let's decide like this."

Alex reassured her, "I'm just going to a different place to study. Uncle Matthew said you can visit me anytime you want."

Despite his words, Nora was still very worried. "But it's not the same. Alex, do you know what being a live-in son-in-law means?" she asked.

Alex stiffened, glancing at Erin beside him, feeling a bit embarrassed.

Alex answered, "I know what it means."

It meant that when he grew up, he would marry Erin and live in her home.

"Alex, you're still young. You might not understand what it means to be a live-in son-in-law. You might blame me in the future," Nora said, feeling guilty and unsure how things had come to this.

Alex was her son. He was so understanding and well-behaved. She couldn't believe they were discussing his future, especially something as significant as marriage!

"I won't, Mommy. You'll always be the person I love the most," Alex reassured her, then added, "Mommy, you always taught me that as a boy, I should take responsibility. I caused this trouble, so I'll bear the consequences."

Alex spoke with maturity and determination. Nora felt like crying.

Nora said hesitantly, "Alex..."

"All right, Mommy. Let's just decide this happily!" Alex said and smiled.

Happily? She wasn't happy at all. She felt terrible.

"Dr. Hamilton, thank you for your son. On behalf of the Jones family, I thank you," Matthew's smiling voice came through.

Matthew dare said that. Nora wanted to scold him. No, she wanted to scold him in person!

At that moment, the phone suddenly picked up the sound of violent coughing. Nora heard Alex calling Matthew. Matthew said, "Everyone, stay back."

Nora was worried. "Alex, what's wrong with Matthew?" she asked.

Alex faced the camera, and told her, "Mommy, Uncle Matthew looks very unwell. He's gone back to his room."

It seemed Matthew's health was deteriorating. Nora felt even more troubled, looking at Alex's young face in the camera, filled with conflict and guilt.

Nora insisted, "Alex, can we discuss this again?"

"Mommy, I'm not going to die. Don't look at me like that," Alex said.

At that moment, Aaron's face appeared in the camera. He squatted down, gripping Alex's shoulders.

Aaron asked again, "Alex, I'll ask you one more time. Are you sure you want to stay?"

Alex nodded and answered, "I'm sure."

Aaron responded, "All right, you're a brave boy. I agree."
