Chapter 176 Waiting For You to Understand Me
"Sue insisted," she said gently, her hand moving slowly as she wiped down Jack's hand with a napkin. Each finger was treated with the utmost care, as if she were dusting off a priceless piece of art. When she was done, she didn't forget to blow gently on them.
The warmth of her breath sent an unexpected shiver through Jack's fingertips, making them feel unusually warm.
Quickly, he withdrew his hand, declaring, "That's enough."
Sue observed the faint blush creeping up the edges of his ears and the discomfort in his eyes, finding it amusing.
Her eyes sparkled with unabashed amusement as she watched his embarrassment unfold.
Nora, who had been observing the entire scene, barely held back a laugh. She pretended not to notice, not wanting to add to Jack's discomfort.
The dishes began to arrive, and the trio engaged in casual conversation.
Halfway through the meal, Nora deliberately made an excuse to give the two some space.
"Take your time eating. I need to use the restroom," she announced.
With a wink at Sue, she picked up her purse, preparing to leave.
Upon seeing her rise, Jack quickly interjected, "Nora, there's a restroom in the private room."
Nora paused, then quickly came up with another excuse, "Jack, I need to go shopping for a bit."
"What do you need to buy? Maybe I can get it for you?" Jack offered.
Caught off guard, Nora struggled to respond when Sue smoothly intervened.
"Jack, can you drop it already? Nora obviously needs to buy some women's products."
Nora nodded rapidly, grateful for the save.
'No wonder she's a director. She handles situations much better than I do,' she thought.
Jack looked a bit embarrassed and chose to remain silent.
Once Nora had left, Sue handed Jack a dish.
"I can serve myself," Jack said, clearly uncomfortable with Sue's attentiveness.
Sue's eyes danced with mischief as she replied, "How about passing me a dish, Jack?"
As he glanced up, he saw her holding a plate with an expectant look.
He couldn't help but feel amused as he placed a steak onto her plate, saying, "I didn't expect such a renowned director to be this playful."
Sue chuckled softly, "Jack, there are so many things about me you wouldn't believe. I'm waiting for you to discover them."
Jack's brow furrowed almost imperceptibly.
He glanced at her, "Sue..."
He wanted to ask her if she had feelings for him. But the words wouldn't come out. They were friends, after all, and he didn't want to make a fool of himself and add awkwardness to the mix.
"What do you want to ask?" Sue said after swallowing a bite of her meal.
"Nothing." Jack looked down and continued eating.
Sue raised an eyebrow, studying the gentle features of his face. She thought to herself that she had to chat with Nora later about how she could play her wingman.
Outside the private dining room, Nora sent Sue a message saying she was heading back to the lab. She told her to take her time with Jack.
Sue hadn't replied to the message, likely not seeing it.
Nora pocketed her phone with a small smile, somewhat excited about the potential sparks between the two.
The hallway was quiet at the moment, with only a few waiters passing by to serve the private rooms.
As she turned a corner and was about to enter the elevator, Nora caught sight of a service door opening nearby. A waitress's upper body lunged out, screaming for help.
Then, someone grabbed her from behind, covering her mouth and pulling her back into the room.
With a thud, the door slammed shut again.
Nora stood frozen, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts. The fleeting glance she had caught of the waitress was brief, yet the familiarity in the woman's eyes was undeniable.
Where had she seen that waitress before? Was the woman truly crying out for help?
Without a moment's hesitation, Nora quickened her pace toward the room, forcefully pushing the door open.
Inside, a mixed group of six or seven individuals were congregated.
Two scantily dressed women were off to the side, their giggles echoing through the room while three men huddled around a couch, their jeers filled with interest.
On the couch, a girl was being held down by a man, her clothes ripped, revealing a significant amount of her skin.
The woman's cries for help filled the room, but the man was indifferent, only pausing his assault to unbuckle his belt.
Nora's eyes hardened, her voice echoing through the room as she shouted, "What are you doing? Stop it right now, or I'm calling the cops!"
She brandished her phone, feigning a call for help. The room fell silent as everyone turned to look at her.
"Who are you? Mind your own business. Do you even know who booked this room?"
"Hey, lady, don't go looking for trouble. This is Jackson Gordon's place."
The onlookers warned Nora.
Jackson! So it was him!
Nora shifted her gaze back to the couch where the man had momentarily ceased his actions.
He rose from the couch, his gaze meeting hers.
"Well, look who it is, Miss Smith! Seems like we're fated to bump into each other everywhere we go!"
Jackson's shirt was barely buttoned, his pants hung low around his hips, the perfect embodiment of a spoiled rich kid.
Nora's lips were pressed together tightly, her intent to speak interrupted by a desperate cry from the couch, "Miss Smith, save me!"
She attempted to rush over but found herself held back by a man's firm grip.
'Does she recognize me?' Nora paused, studying the girl who had called out to her.
The girl had a fair complexion and striking, upturned eyes—an alluring feature.
"Dr. Smith, don't you remember me? I'm Evella. My grandfather had terminal brain cancer, and you worked with Jack on his surgery."
Evella's face was flushed with urgency, her eyes filled with fear and unease, pleading for Nora not to abandon her.
Finally, Nora remembered who Evella was.
She shot Evella a calming look and said to the man called Jackson, "Is bullying a defenseless girl what you call bravery? I'd suggest you let her go now, or I'm calling the cops."
Jackson pressed his tongue against the back of his teeth as if the pain that Aaron had dealt him still lingered.
Aaron doted on Nora and had plans to shake things up for her today.
"Miss Smith, you trying to challenge me? I'd like to see you take her away!"
Nora, seeing Jackson advance toward her, wasted no time and dialed 911.
"You dare to call the police?" sneered the nearest tough.
Stepping closer, he snatched Nora's phone and hurled it to the ground, shattering it into pieces.
A chill ran down Nora's spine.
As the man reached for her, she deftly pulled out an acupuncture needle.
"Watch out, she's got a needle!" Jackson warned, too late.
The man's hand was paralyzed halfway through reaching for her, slumping uselessly by his side.
"What in the world... Why can't I move my hand?" he bellowed, face twisting in horror.
Onlookers gasped, incredulous at the scene.
"What are you? What did you do to him?" another man demanded.
