Chapter 1012 Destiny's Decree
Listening to Hugo's translation, Walter looked a bit embarrassed.
He stood up and said, "Sorry for the trouble today. My bad. I'll get two rooms ready for them right away."
With that, Walter left.
Nora noticed Maiken coughing a lot, so she sat by the bed, pulled out a needle, and gave Maiken a shot.
Maiken's coughing eased, and she looked at the needle in surprise.
Nora said, "You're really weak. I'll write a prescription and have Mr. Rochet get you some meds to help you recover."
Maiken looked up, still a bit out of it.
Alfred's clear voice chimed in. "Mommy, she's nice. She and Samantha helped us today."
Hearing this, Maiken's eyes brightened a bit.
She tried to get up to kneel and thank Nora.
Nora quickly stopped her. "No need to thank me. I'm a doctor; it's my job to help."
After Hugo translated, Maiken smiled gratefully at Nora.
Maiken's gaze shifted to Samantha, who was staring at her, then to Alfred. Her eyes reddened slightly.
Both were kids, but their lives were so different.
One was loved and cherished.
The other was despised by everyone.
"It's my fault Alfred is suffering. Alfred, I'm not a good mom." Maiken covered her mouth and started to cry.
Seeing Maiken cry, Alfred was about to cry too.
Thinking of the chicken leg in his hand, he quickly offered it to Maiken. "Mommy, eat this. It's really tasty, and you'll feel stronger."
"Sweetie, you eat it. I'm not hungry." Looking at the thoughtful Alfred, Maiken's eyes reddened even more.
Living here, Alfred had suffered a lot.
They hadn't had meat in who knows how long.
"I've had enough. I saved this for you. Please eat it," Alfred said.
Maiken's tears fell uncontrollably. She took a small bite of the chicken leg and hugged Alfred tightly. "My good boy."
Samantha, with her strong empathy, watched Alfred and Maiken crying together. Her small mouth pouted, and her big eyes filled with tears.
She tugged on Nora's hand. "Mommy, Alfred and his mommy are so pitiful. No one here gives them food. Alfred almost drowned just trying to find a chicken leg for his mommy. Can't we take them home?"
Nora was stunned.
So Alfred almost drowned just for a chicken leg!
The people here really treated Alfred terribly.
Alfred was indeed pitiful.
But did Samantha think their home was a shelter?
Did Samantha think that just because they took in Millie before, they could take in anyone?
Alfred and Maiken's situation was different from Millie's.
They had someone responsible for them.
"Samantha, this is Alfred's home. Walter just said he'd arrange a new place for them. You don't need to worry," Aaron said from the side.
Samantha frowned and added, "But there are many bad people here who will hurt Alfred. If Alfred hadn't met me and Uncle Frederick today, he might have drowned."
Aaron was silent for a moment. "I'll talk to Walter and make sure he treats them well, okay?"
Samantha's eyes reddened. "Daddy, can't we really take them with us?"
Samantha's overflowing compassion!
Aaron felt a bit helpless and said gently, "I'm afraid not. But they can come to our house as guests in the future."
Hearing this, Samantha deflated a bit. "Okay."
Aaron couldn't stand seeing Samantha so upset. He comforted her, "Don't worry. I'll talk to Walter. If the servants bully them again, I won't let it slide."
Hearing this, Samantha perked up a bit.
She looked at Alfred and said, "Alfred, my daddy said he'll talk to your daddy and won't let anyone bully you anymore."
"You can come play with me. I'll give you my phone number. If someone bullies you or doesn't give you food, call me. My daddy and mommy are very powerful and will help you."
Nora rubbed her forehead. 'Samantha, don't brag like that.'
Samantha used a translation app.
Both Maiken and Alfred heard it.
Alfred's eyes brightened, and he nodded eagerly.
Maiken, lying on the bed, looked at Samantha, her eyes also lighting up.
She moved slightly, her eyes red as she thanked Nora, "Thank you. You are all good people."
Nora smiled. "Alfred is very sensible. Take care of yourself and raise him well."
Maiken glanced at Alfred, tears falling again. "It's my fault Alfred is suffering. But I didn't cheat on Mr. Rochet. I was framed."
Listening to Hugo's translation, a spark of intrigue flickered in Nora's eyes. "Do you know who framed you?"
Maiken clenched her fists, her eyes filled with anger and helplessness. "It was Mrs. Rochet. She was angry and framed me."
Astrid did it?
Nora looked at her. "Do you have any evidence?"
Maiken shook her head, her eyes red. "No evidence, but she told me herself. She hates me and wants to drive me out."
She wiped her tears and said, "I admit, it was wrong of me to sleep with Mr. Rochet. I shouldn't have destroyed their family, but I just wanted a place to live. I just wanted to survive. If I had known that giving birth to Alfred would make him suffer, I would rather have starved on the streets than sleep with Mr. Rochet."
Maiken's face was covered in tears. She looked at the frail Alfred, full of guilt. "I'm sorry, Alfred. It's my fault."
Alfred's eyes were red, and tears kept falling.
But he stubbornly didn't make a sound, just kept wiping his tears.
Maiken said, "Many times, I wanted to end it all. But if I die, what will happen to Alfred? A child without a mother is like a floating weed, even more tormented. I don't dare to die."
Alfred couldn't hold back anymore.
He choked out, "Mommy, don't cry. I will become strong. When I grow up, I'll take you away from here."
Maiken hugged him, closing her eyes and sobbing.
Listening to Hugo's translation, Nora felt a wave of emotion.
From different perspectives, she couldn't judge who was right or wrong.
If what Maiken said was true, then Astrid was indeed ruthless.
But could she be blamed?
No one wanted their husband to have a mistress.
Especially not a young and beautiful woman like Maiken.
Although Maiken was a refugee, she shouldn't have destroyed someone else's family.
It was just fate.
Before long, a servant came to help Maiken and Alfred move.
No matter what Walter thought, he arranged two rooms for Maiken and Alfred.
Nora wrote a prescription for Maiken, and Walter didn't say anything, instructing the servant to take care of it.
