Chapter 43 Killer
Jack's normally calm face suddenly darkened.
He was about to speak up, but Nora quickly grasped his hand.
"I wonder who keeps begging me to come back home with him on the sly," she retorted with a mocking sparkle in her beautiful eyes.
Lucas, reminded of his humiliations, had his face was livid.
Becky glanced at Lucas with resentment filling her gaze. As Nora walked away without another word, Becky's fingers clenched in fury, itching to confront her.
"Mommy, you're hurting me," piped up her son, his little face wrinkled in discomfort.
Becky immediately loosened her grip, taking a deep breath. She wasn't angry. Soon, Nora wouldn't be able to compete with her anymore!
Meanwhile, Jack held the passenger door open for Nora.
"Nora, with Samantha already in kindergarten, why haven't you started the divorce proceedings with Lucas yet?"
Nora buckled her seatbelt and responded with a serene smile.
"No rush," she smirked. "I'll just wait for the desperate to come begging."
She had no intention of marrying anyway, just the thought of Becky in a frenzy, helpless and flustered, was too delicious to resist.
"So I heard from Jenny that Lucas has some regrets. If you don't divorce, do you think he'll keep hounding you?" Jack asked as he climbed into the driver's seat.
Nora laughed lightly, "With Becky in the picture, Lucas wouldn't dare to do much."
At most, that couple might have a few more spats.
"When are you planning to come help me in the lab?" Jack started the car, smoothly changing the topic.
Nora, truth be told, was eager to dive back into her research.
But there was still someone at home who depended on her care.
"There's a patient at home, I must wait until he's back on his feet before I commit to anything else."
Jack pondered for a moment. "I could find someone to look after him."
Nora raised an eyebrow, thinking of the person's nitpicky attitude, and shook her head.
"That's okay, he's a bit of an oddball and probably wouldn't take kindly to a stranger."
Jack glanced at her and let the matter drop.
"We've got some time. How about a quick tour of the lab?" he suggested.
"Sure, sounds good."
Meanwhile, in the deserted countryside, a luxury car was parked by the road.
A man and a woman stepped out, surveying the scene ahead of them.
The man, tall at nearly six feet, had a handsome and distinct face.
The woman, slightly under five foot seven, sported stylish sunglasses and trendy attire; her figure elegant and charming.
"Bro, you really think Aaron's around here?" Suzy scanned the unkempt village with a look of disdain.
"Yeah," Howard paused thoughtfully. "Elder Gordon was hospitalized because of Aaron's incident and was in a terrible state. But then he rebounded too quickly. It doesn't add up unless his heartache was relieved. Meaning Aaron must be fine."
Howard continued, "I've been keeping an eye on Aaron's special assistant, Noe. Noticed he's been down to this area several times over the past month. My guess is, Aaron's been recuperating here in secret. But Noe's tight-lipped; couldn't get anything out of him."
Upon hearing this, Suzy nodded in agreement, "Aaron's always had incredible luck; he's probably okay."
"Let's keep looking then," affirmed Howard, guiding Suzy towards the village.
Walking through the rough countryside path was a challenge, especially for Suzy in her high heels and full makeup, clearly frustrated.
"Howard, with so many houses in the village, where on earth do you think Aaron could be?"
Noticing someone weeded garden nearby, Howard suggested, "Let's go ask around."
The duo walked over to confront a woman.
"Ma'am, excuse me, have you seen this man?" they inquired, approaching the same heavyset woman who had clashed with Aaron before.
The woman scrutinized the photo of Aaron that Howard produced and clicked her tongue.
"Well, if it isn't the pretty boy that Nora brought home! Are you his family?"
Howard and Suzy exchanged surprised glances at the nickname.
"You're saying he's known as Pretty Boy?" Howard asked.
"Yeah, he's been living with Nora for over a month now," the woman replied, her eyes rolling as she recalled the humiliation she had suffered previously.
"You're out of the loop. That Nora, she's always been loose, had three kids with different men before even getting married. Got dumped by her husband and then ended up here. And recently, out of the blue, she takes this guy in as her pretty boy."
Suzy's expression darkened slightly upon hearing this.
"Ma'am, where's he living now?"
"Right over there." The woman nonchalantly pointed to Nora's house.
Without hesitation, Suzy started heading in that direction.
"Thanks for your help," Howard said hastily, stuffing a wad of cash into the woman's hand before hurrying after Suzy.
Surprise washed over the woman's face – she hadn't expected to make money just by recognizing someone. Watching Suzy's retreating figure, she pondered; the woman looked startlingly familiar, almost like a celebrity.
Inside the little building, Aaron was absorbed in a medical text when he faintly heard his name being called. Wheeling himself to the door, he found the Howard siblings waiting outside the fence.
“How did they find me?” Aaron thought to himself.
"Howard, Suzy."
Aaron addressed them. Howard and Suzy hailed from the prestigious Hamilton family of the Imperial Capital, long-standing allies of the Gordon family. Howard, a reputable doctor, was the second eldest at home, while Suzy, who was adopted by the Hamilton family, had once saved Aaron's life. Both families had been trying to bring them together.
"Howard, it's really Aaron!" Suzy exclaimed, removing her sunglasses, a mix of shock and delight in her eyes. Delighted to have found Aaron, shocked to see him in a wheelchair.
"Aaron, stay there, I'm coming in."
Seeing Aaron's mobility issue, Howard vaulted the courtyard's fence to get to him.
"Careful of the switch by your foot, Howard!" Aaron called out urgently.
But it was too late. A jet of water burst into the air at Howard's misstep.
Howard tried to dodge but still got sprayed.
"Damn, what was that?!"
Aaron burst out laughing.
Seeing Howard open the gate for Suzy to come in, he cautioned, "Watch out, there are more traps in the courtyard."
Howard quickly steadied Suzy, being extremely cautious as they avoided the traps scattered about the Courtyard House, making their way to the front door.
Tears welled up in Suzy's eyes as she squatted down and embraced Aaron.
"Aaron, we finally found you."
Aaron looked at her calmly, patted her back, then gently pushed her away.
"How did you guys find me?"
"It was my brother who noticed something amiss and led me here."
Suzy clutched Aaron's hand, tears in her eyes, "Aaron, why are you in a wheelchair? Come back with us."
"Yeah, Aaron, your leg looks pretty bad. Come with me and I'll get a professional medical team to treat you."
Howard knelt down to examine Aaron's injury, his expression grave.
"No need, the person who saved me is a doctor. She said she can cure me," Aaron said, pulling his hand away from Suzy, turning down their offer.
"Aaron, on our way here we met a woman who said your rescuer is a single mother?"
Howard couldn't help but sneer, "You believe the words of some backwoods woman?"
"Yeah, Aaron, does she know who you are and is just claiming she can heal you to extort money?"
Suzy echoed Howard's suspicions.
A hint of annoyance crossed Aaron's face.
"She doesn't know who I am; I told her I had amnesia."
"Or maybe she just wants to keep you here because you're handsome, to help raise her child?"
Aaron looked at her, his expression turning cold.
"Suzy, stop talking about her like that!"
Why did he dislike hearing anything bad about Nora?
