Chapter 104 Granting Her a Happily Ever After
With a sigh of resignation, Alexander conceded, "Alright, I'll get up and take a shower." He relinquished her hand and made his way towards the bathroom. However, the shrill ring of a cellphone stopped him in his tracks. Doubling back, he picked up the device and glanced at the caller ID. As he looked up, his gaze met Ava's, filled with a complexity she understood all too well.
Recognizing the silent message in his eyes, Ava held her peace and exited the room. She went straight to the kitchen, where she began to dish out the still-warm food from the insulated box into bowls and plates, arranging them meticulously on the dining table.
She had prepared all this for Alexander, her worry that he might wake up famished gnawing at her. As she had suspected, his stomach had growled the moment he awoke, likely a result of his skipped lunch.
After setting the table, she positioned herself by the bedroom door just in time to see Alexander emerge, now fully dressed. "There's food for you in the dining room, go eat," she instructed, ready to make her exit.
"Wait a moment," Alexander called out.
"What is it?" Ava turned back.
Alexander extended her phone towards her, "Isabella wishes to speak with you."
Ava glanced at the illuminated screen of her phone, still connected to Isabella. She shook her head with a hint of understanding, "No, there's nothing left to be said between her and me."
"Ava, she's not looking for a fight. She wants to apologize. Just talk to her," he implored.
"I don't need an apology. I don't want to talk."
Ava attempted to leave, but Alexander's firm grip on her arm stopped her. "Ava, for my sake, please talk to her. I don't want you two at odds like enemies."
Ava nearly scoffed at that—did he truly expect his wife to befriend his mistress?
With a sigh, Ava accepted the phone and held it to her ear, hoping for a swift resolution. "Hello?"
"Ava, I owe you an apology. I misunderstood you yesterday at lunch, and I was too harsh. I'm sorry."
"Fine, I forgive you. Goodbye." She moved to end the call.
But Alexander stopped her from disconnecting.
"Ava, wait. I— I really don't want to upset you. Have you truly forgiven me?" Isabella's voice wavered, choked with a sob.
"What do you want me to say to make you believe I've forgiven you?" Ava's voice was frosty.
Such a dramatic woman.
"To be honest, Ava, seeing you and Alex like this is heart-wrenching. You know how he feels about me. I don't want you to keep hurting. So, if you're ready to move on, you should just go ahead and divorce him. That way, we all can get back to normal."
A crooked smile tugged at Ava's mouth—that woman was clearly eager to marry Alexander.
"I've already signed the divorce papers. What can I do if they've been torn up? This conversation is better had with Alexander. Tell him to draft a few more copies of the divorce agreement. That's all, goodbye."
Having had enough, Ava ended the call and handed the phone back to Alexander.
"Your Isabella is frantic, pushing for our divorce."
Alexander's expression remained placid. He seemed to be aware of the situation. "Isabella's not in good health, and yesterday's events frightened her. Don't you also want the divorce to be finalized soon?"
Alexander tightened his grip on the phone. "Ava, we need to figure out how to handle this without upsetting Grandma. Let's find a peaceful way to go through with the divorce."
Ava snorted silently. The man was clearly in a rush.
He had asked her to take a call from Isabella, not for Isabella's sake of apologizing, but to assuage Isabella’s guilt as he seized the opportunity to propose divorce.
Everything he did revolved around Isabella.
"Alex, are you trying to marry Isabella as soon as possible, to give her a happily ever after?"
Even though Ava had known the answer to this question all along, she couldn't help but seek confirmation, making sure she could let go completely.
