Chapter 412 She Couldn't Make It

Eight hours earlier, at 10 a.m., Alexander was still at Mia's place, sound asleep on the couch. Slowly, he opened his eyes, feeling a splitting headache, and noticed a fuzzy blanket tightly wrapped around him, secured with a rope.

Confusion clouded his mind as he took in his surroundings. It was a strange living room, yet he knew exactly where he was.

The events of last night flooded back to him like a tidal wave. He had gotten drunk and sought solace from his mother, behaving like a lost child.

Alexander slapped his head in self-disgust.

What a disgrace!

He untangled himself from the blanket and rope, tossing them aside, and made his way unsteadily to the bathroom.

After freshening up, he checked his pockets and realized his phone was missing. He found it at the corner of the couch, where several missed calls from the hospital were displayed on the screen.

He must have been in a deep sleep not to hear them.

A sense of foreboding washed over Alexander as he returned the call. "Hello, what's the matter?" The voice on the other end delivered shocking news, causing Alexander's expression to change drastically. "What? I see. I'll be right there."

Alexander rushed to the hospital.

Isabella had an accident in the middle of the night.

An infection had caused a rapid decline in her organ function despite the doctors' efforts to control her skyrocketing white blood cell count.

The cause of the disease remained unknown.

Previously, with proper care at the hospital, Isabella had time to wait for a suitable heart for transplantation. But now, her condition had deteriorated to the point where she couldn't afford to wait any longer. She needed surgery within a week. Without a healthy heart for transplant, her chances of survival were slim.

Although Isabella's name was at the top of the transplant list, no suitable heart had been found yet.

Alexander thought Isabella still had time to wait, but now he was faced with a harsh reality.

Isabella lay weakly on the hospital bed. When she saw Alexander by her side, she didn't even have the strength to cry. She turned her head away, refusing to look at him.

Alexander sat beside her, saying softly, "Isabella, I'm sorry I couldn't come to see you these past few days. I've been busy."

"Alexander, I know I'm dying. You don't want me, and you won't marry me. I've been waiting, waiting until I'm almost dead."

Alexander didn't know what to say.

"Alexander, you promised to marry me. I'm almost dead, and you haven't fulfilled your promise. That's why you sent me that message last night." Isabella's voice was filled with grievance. Alexander was puzzled, "What message?"

"What message? Don't you know it yourself?" Her tone was resentful.

Alexander took his phone out of his pocket and looked at the message he sent last night.
He had no recollection of sending such a message.

Suddenly, Alexander understood.

Mia must have sent it.

"Isabella, I didn't send this message. I was with my mom last night, and I was drunk. It must have been her. "I'll delete it right away."

He couldn't have sent such a message to Isabella.

Upon hearing this, Isabella's eyes seemed to light up. "Really?" But soon, her gaze dimmed a bit. "No, you're lying to me. You must be lying to me."

"I'm not lying. Let me make a call to my mom." Alexander dialed his mother's number.

Before he could speak, Mia said, "Alexander, I wanted to talk to you about something. I missed you when I got home. Let's meet tonight, you, me, and Ava, for dinner."

"Tonight?" Alexander said, "I can't. I have to be with Isabella."

"What are you doing with her?"

"Isabella had an accident."

"She's always having accidents, and they never end. Don't you want a normal life?" Mia said angrily.
