Chapter 56 Jealousy in Action
Hospital.
The hospital room was quiet, save for the occasional beep of the medical equipment.
William sat by Ava's bed, meticulously peeling an apple for her as the soft, ambient light from the bedside lamp illuminated his focused features.
"Mr. Bennett, I'm sorry for troubling you so much that you came all this way," Ava said.
"There's nothing to be sorry about. I chose to come here; you didn't ask me to. If I don't mind, why should you?" William replied.
Ava smiled politely, then her expression turned apologetic, "I was a bit abrupt when I hung up on you earlier. You're not upset, are you?"
"Do you really think I would come here if I was upset?" He finished peeling the apple, cut it into small pieces, put them in a box, and handed one to her, "Eat some apple."
Ava attempted to sit up, "I can..."
"Don't move around. Have you forgotten what happened?" William's tone was warning, yet warm.
Ava grimaced awkwardly, "Mr. Bennett, you don't have to be so nice to me. I'm not used to it."
"What's there to get used to? You're the patient. It gives me a chance to experience taking care of someone. It'll be useful when I have a wife in the future."
Ava was a bit confused, but she couldn't find anything wrong with what he said.
"Open your mouth." He urged, holding a piece of apple near her lips.
Reluctantly, Ava opened her mouth.
He fed her a small piece of apple.
"Mr. Bennett, why did you call me earlier?" She had been in a hurry to hang up and hadn't asked then.
"It wasn't anything important. Didn't you offer to treat me to dinner last time? I was just wondering when you'd be free."
Ava almost forgot about that, "You're still injured, aren't you?" It had been less than three days since they last met.
"I'm fine as long as I don't engage in strenuous activities. But you, in your current state, probably won't be able to treat me to that meal anytime soon."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Bennett. Once I've recovered, I'll definitely treat you to that meal. I won't forget."
"Good, then I'll wait for you to get better." William smiled gently.
"Mr. Bennett, it's quite late. Don't you want to go back and rest?"
She felt bad for keeping him here.
"Once you finish this apple, I'll leave."
Ava nodded, obediently opening her mouth to eat the apple he handed her.
He was a considerate man. He had come all this way because he knew she was in trouble, and he hadn't asked any unnecessary questions. She felt relaxed around him.
To be precise, she felt relaxed around anyone except Alexander.
"Being fed while lying down... nice."
A gloomy male voice suddenly sounded.
Ava and William turned their heads to see Alexander standing at the door of the ward, his face cold, and his eyes frostily fixed on the two of them in the room.
He strode over as his sharp gaze landed on William; his anger was almost visible.
But when he saw Ava lying on the hospital bed, his anger was somewhat suppressed.
"Why didn't you tell me you had a stomachache and drove yourself to the hospital? What if something had happened on the way? Do you know how worried I was?"
Ava was stunned when she saw Alexander. She didn't expect him to be here. She was panicking, afraid that he would find out about her near miscarriage. But then she heard him mention her stomachache, and confusion flickered in her eyes.
Why did he say she had a stomachache?
