Chapter 264 Keep You in Check
"Ava Anderson!" Alexander Mitchell shot up from the bed, "What are you talking about? Using my money to support men? And you dare say such things to my face!"
His eyes were ablaze with fury as he unleashed a barrage of accusations.
Ava covered her lips, feigning shock, "Your... your money?"
She dropped her hand, her tone laced with sarcasm, "Mr. Mitchell, so in your heart, all that money is yours, and I need your permission to spend it? It seems you've always seen me as an outsider, talking about 'sister' this, 'sister' that, liar!"
She turned her head away in distress, pouting and looking hurt.
Seeing the pained expression on her face, Alexander Mitchell panicked instantly. "That's not what I meant."
"Then what did you mean? Didn't you just say that I was using your money to support another man? If you think all the money in my account is yours, then just take it all. It would save us from this facade that you're giving it to me out of charity."
If it were Alex asking for all of it back, she would return it without hesitation. She never wanted his money in the first place; he was the one who insisted on giving it to her.
If he now felt that it was still his money and he had the right to dictate how she used it, then why should she bother staying?
"I didn't mean that. It's your money, but that doesn't mean you should spend it recklessly."
No matter how composed he appeared on the surface, his heart was in complete turmoil.
Shooting off your mouth is momentarily thrilling but explaining yourself is like going through hell.
"If it's my money, why can't I spend it however I want? Can't I have fun for myself?" Ava Anderson argued.
"Of course, you can have fun," Alexander Mitchell explained, "but there are certain ways you shouldn't spend it. Men can be bad, and you could be easily deceived. Haven't you seen the news? Many people are swindled out of everything they have. I'm just looking out for you."
The more he spoke, the less confident he became.
"Oh, really? Looking out for me?" Ava Anderson said lightly, pulling at the corner of her mouth. "Once you start waving the 'I'm looking out for you' flag, I really have no way of arguing, do I?"
Hearing Ava Anderson’s tone still tinged with jealousy, Alexander Mitchell worried that the more he tried to clarify, the worse it would get.
They were already divorced; he truly had no right to forbid her from seeing other men.
"Ava, it's not that I'm telling you not to find someone else. I'm just worried you'll be deceived. How about this? When you find someone new, bring him to me first, and I'll look him over. What if you run into a scammer? I am older and have seen more of the world. You're just out of college and still naïve."
Afraid that she wouldn't believe him, Alexander Mitchell rushed to explain a lot more.
"Naïve? Are you saying that in your eyes, I'm still a child who knows nothing, innocent and easily fooled?"
If that's what it had to be, then she was indeed fooled—by a man named Alexander Mitchell.
He was right about one thing—men can be bad, and that included himself.
A bad man teaching her how to avoid being fooled by other bad men was, indeed, laughable.
It was almost comical how her ex-husband, Alexander Mitchell, seemed to think he needed to act like a father, demanding to vet her future boyfriends as if he had some sort of say in the matter.
Ava Anderson couldn't describe how bizarre Alexander's words were.
"I didn't," Alexander had been internally panicking but outwardly calm; however, now he couldn't even keep his expression steady. "I don't think of you as a child, Ava. I'm just worried about you."
"Worried about what?" Ava asked coldly. "We’re not married anymore. What concern is it of yours? You should be..."
