Chapter 527 I Really Missed You
"Ava," Alexander turned to face her and said, "I'm just so heartbroken because you're so close to me now, but I know I've lost you. We couldn't be like we used to be. I really miss you."
Alexander lowered his head in despair. "Do you know? On your birthday, I was drinking at Ethan's place. When you came over, I thought he was bullying you, so I hit him."
Ava nodded. "I remember. You mistook me for Isabella at that time."
Thinking about it still made her feel aggrieved. She clearly remembered how she felt back then, disappointed and hurt.
Alexander gave a helpless smile. "Actually, I knew it was you. I didn't mistake you for Isabella. I said her name on purpose."
Ava was taken aback. "What did you say?"
Alexander took a light breath. "After proposing divorce, the anguish within me was profound, prompting a relentless indulgence in alcohol. However, I refrained from confiding in you, presuming then that our bond was merely fraternal. Convinced that you would welcome the notion of divorce, I was taken aback when you witnessed my utmost distress. Consequently, to conceal my inner turmoil, I mentioned Isabella's name because I aimed for you to stand resolute in our separation."
Ava didn't know what to say for a moment. This situation was truly complicated.
"Alex, this is all in the past. There's no point in bringing it up again."
Even if they talked about it again, she couldn't get back together with him just because she knew the truth. Some things, once slipped through our fingers, are lost in the wind forever. Not all wounds could be healed with a simple apology.
"Ava, I wasn't there to celebrate your birthday with you, and that was my fault. You didn't like the birthday gift I gave you either. I spent a long time choosing that bracelet."
His tone was as forlorn as a child who had lost his candy.
Ava thought about that bracelet. Because of it, they had argued many times, mostly about Isabella. Isabella had clearly said that she had asked Alexander to choose that bracelet, but Alexander insisted he had chosen it himself.
Ava knew Isabella was trying to sow discord. She had told Alexander what Isabella had said, but he didn't believe her. To this day, she still had a shadow over that incident, but she didn't want to bring it up anymore.
She really didn't care anymore. Whether Alex believed her or not, he was no longer her husband.
Ava sighed softly. "Can we stop thinking about those things? They don't matter anymore."
"It may seem insignificant to you, but it holds great weight for me. I am aware that dwelling on it is futile, yet I find myself unable to restrain these emotions. Ava, I am deeply sorrowful, struggling to contain my turmoil of feelings. Countless times, I have questioned myself, wondering why I didn't pose to you the inquiry of whether you loved me before raising divorce."
Alexander grabbed her shoulders. "Ava, can you tell me, if I had asked you if you loved me before I filed for divorce, how would you have answered?"
Ava's eyes became a bit moist. She smiled helplessly, "Whether I loved you or not doesn't matter anymore. We shouldn't be entangled in this question anymore; it's exhausting. Besides, there are more important things in life than love. I believe that you can still live well without me. You'll slowly move on."
