Chapter 361 Selfish Thoughts
"Mia, are you suggesting that I should take the initiative? That I should make sure she remains here, rather than venturing elsewhere?" Alexander queried, a hint of uncertainty in his voice.
In response, Mia simply nodded, "It would indeed be beneficial if she stayed. After all, she has spent her entire life within the confines of Mitchell Manor. Why would she suddenly desire to venture so far away?"
Alexander had always ensured that she didn't stray too far, especially when she had left for college. He couldn't deny the selfish thoughts that had plagued him, the desire to keep her close, akin to parents who wished to keep their children within arm's reach.
However, he knew that if Ava truly wished to attend college in a different city, he wouldn't stand in her way. Fortunately, Ava had chosen to remain in A City for her studies.
"I overheard Ava mentioning her desire to travel," Mia interjected, a sly smile playing on her lips.
Alexander's brow furrowed at the news, unease creeping into his voice, "Where does she plan to travel to?"
Mia shrugged and said, "I'm not sure. She only mentioned it in passing, and I didn't pry for details. After all, it's perfectly normal for her to want to explore the world."
Alexander sighed, "At the very least, you should have inquired about her travel plans, whether she intends to travel alone or with company, and if she plans to travel domestically or abroad."
Mia nodded, understanding Alexander's concerns more clearly.
"Why don't you ask her yourself when you see her next? If you're so invested in her life, why did you divorce her? If you kept her close, you'd have a valid reason to care," Mia suggested, a hint of bitterness in her voice.
"I..." Alexander stuttered, momentarily at a loss for words.
Sensing his discomfort, Mia sighed softly, "Take your time to think it over. I have other matters to attend to, so I'll hang up now."
With that, Mia ended the call, shaking her head in disbelief, "The men of the Mitchell family, each one more obtuse than the last."
Instead of calling Ava directly, Mia decided to send her a text message.
Mia: [I'm meeting Alexander tonight. Are you free?]
Ava responded promptly.
Ava: [I'm sorry, Mia, I already have plans tonight. I made arrangements with friends.]
Mia: [What friends? Are you all going to have dinner together?]
Ava: [Yes, we're getting together with a few friends.]
Mia: [I see. Okay, I'll meet Alexander by myself then.]
Ava: [Alright, if there's anything you need, just give me a call.]
Mia: [Okay.]
After ending the chat with Ava, Mia immediately sent a text to Alexander.
Mia: [I just called Ava, she said she's busy tonight with friends.]
Alexander responded almost instantly.
Alexander: [What friends? Guys or girls?]
Mia: [I don't know. She's meeting with friends, I don't need to ask so many questions.]
As soon as Mia sent this message, Alexander called her.
With a sigh, she reluctantly answered, "What's the matter?"
Alexander asked, "Why didn't you ask her? Aren't you worried that she's going out to meet someone in the middle of the night? Didn't you say she's like your daughter?"
Mia held the phone away from her ear, a frown creasing her forehead.
"This is her personal life. Even if she calls me mom, I don't need to interfere that much. Besides, as her ex-husband, you have no right to question whether her friends are male or female," she retorted, her voice firm.
Mia could hear Alexander's breath hitch over the phone.
She had purposely withheld the information that Ava wasn't having a one-on-one dinner, but rather a gathering with a group of friends.
Alexander finally spoke, "Since she's not coming, let's not meet tonight. We'll wait until she's available."
Mia couldn't help but scoff, "You truly are my son. So pragmatic. If Ava's not coming, you won't meet me."
"Fine, I'll come to find you. Let's talk alone, starting from when I can remember things. We'll have a good chat," Alexander said.
Mia's face hardened at his words, a shudder running down her spine at the mere thought of such a scenario.
