Chapter 170 Not Rush the Divorce
Within the confines of the car, Ava found herself in the passenger seat, Alexander at the helm, navigating the silent journey. Ava, on multiple occasions, had felt the urge to shatter the quietude, but each time, she was held back by Alexander's reticence. It was akin to a standoff, where the first to break the silence would lose the battle.
As Ava grappled with this thought, Alexander was the first to surrender, his voice cutting through the silence, "I hope you won't dwell on today's events in the future."
Ava's brows furrowed in confusion, "Then why mention it at all?"
"I just want to clarify things. As for the surgery, I will investigate what truly transpired," Alexander stated.
Ava snorted in disbelief, "So, you're implying that you accused Grandma without even verifying the facts?"
"Because I believed it was Grandma's doing, I didn't bother to investigate. Regardless, Isabella has paid the price," Alexander responded.
Ava scoffed, "So, everything she does is justified, all her words are gospel, just because she's ill?"
"And what if it were you? Would you prefer to be sick and garner sympathy like Isabella, or be healthy and misunderstood?" Alexander countered.
Ava laughed a laugh devoid of any joy, "So, illness grants one unlimited protection and sympathy. That's a new lesson for me."
It seemed to her that being sick allowed one to act without consequence, their mistakes overlooked out of pity. Alexander chose not to elaborate further, preferring to let the past remain in the past. His explanations only served to unsettle Ava further.
"Let's proceed with the divorce today. I'll retrieve my documents from home. We can't prolong this any longer," Ava declared.
"Ava, I'd like to discuss the divorce with you," Alexander hesitated.
"What's there to discuss?" she questioned.
Alexander suggested, "Perhaps we shouldn't rush into the divorce."
Ava was taken aback, "What did you just say?"
"Let's not rush the divorce," he reiterated.
Ava's laughter echoed in the car, not out of joy, but from the biting irony, "What's your game, Alexander? You were the one who wanted the divorce. Now, despite everything that has happened, you're suggesting we delay it. Do you find some perverse thrill in being with Isabella after our divorce?"
Understanding Alexander was becoming an increasingly difficult task for Ava.
Alexander's brow furrowed in concern, "That's not what I mean."
Ava demanded, "Then what are you implying?"
Alexander explained, "You witnessed today's events. The Mitchell family will never accept Isabella. Grandma and I had a long discussion. I can see her health deteriorating. If we divorce now, it would deeply hurt her, even if she doesn't voice it, and that's not beneficial for her health."
"But Grandma said that as long as I'm happy, she's happy. Even if we divorce, I'll still visit her frequently," Ava countered.
"I understand," Alexander replied. "Grandma wants your happiness, so she agreed to the divorce. However, deep down, you must realize it's going to distress her. If you don't believe me, call Uncle Mike. Ask him about her reaction to our divorce news."
Ava retrieved her phone and dialed Uncle Mike's number.
After a few minutes, she ended the call and fell silent.
Eventually, Alexander broke the silence, "Well? What did you discover?"
Ava sunk into a deeper silence.
Grandma was indeed distressed. Uncle Mike had revealed that the old lady had been sighing heavily, even shedding secret tears, burdened with guilt.
