Chapter 354 She Couldn't Do It
William: [Hopefully, you'll find her to your liking.]
Ava: [It doesn't matter if I like her or not. What matters is that you do.]
William: [Yes, I do like her. Even if others may not think highly of her, in my eyes, she is different. She's superior to anyone else.]
William's response brought a surge of warmth to Ava. She found herself touched by his sincerity. 'William is truly remarkable,' she mused, 'Any girl who becomes his wife will undoubtedly be happy.'
A pang of envy stirred within her, directed towards the girl who had managed to captivate William's heart. Yet, her envy was fleeting, replaced by happiness for both William and his chosen one.
Feeling a wave of exhaustion wash over her, Ava stifled a yawn. Her conversation with William had alleviated some of her anxiety.
Ava: [William, you should get some rest. You need to be in top form tomorrow.]
William: [Alright, you too. Take good care of yourself and the baby. Send my regards to the little one.]
Ava: [Alright, goodnight.]
William: [Goodnight.]
Ava's hand moved instinctively to her belly, caressing it gently. "Baby, can you feel it? Uncle Dalton cares about you," she murmured.
As she was about to set her phone aside, a new message illuminated the screen.
Alexander: [Are you asleep?]
Ava's brow furrowed at the sender's name. Why was Alexander messaging her at this hour?
Before she could formulate a response, another message from Alexander appeared.
Alexander: [I've been tied up since the meeting today, only just got home.]
Ava didn't respond. For a moment, she wondered if Alexander was aware of her recent conversation with William. Why else would he mention his late return? It seemed intentional.
Ava began to type a response.
Ava: [Why did you come back so late? What kept you busy?]
But her finger hovered over the send button, uncertainty creeping in. After a moment's hesitation, she sighed softly, deleting the message. She silenced her phone and set it aside. She needed to distance herself from Alexander, she couldn't bear the heartache any longer.
After their divorce, they could no longer be friends or family, they couldn't chat into the wee hours as if nothing had changed. Ava simply couldn't do it. She couldn't fathom why Alexander was acting this way. Had he forgotten their past? Perhaps Alexander had, but Ava hadn't.
She would always remember how Alexander had deceived her, mistreated her for Isabella's sake. His cruel words still echoed in her ears, leaving scars on her heart. She couldn't forget, no matter how hard she tried.
The mere thought of it brought a fresh wave of pain, a constant reminder of their tangled past. It lingered in her mind, refusing to dissipate, suffocating her. She closed her eyes, pulling the blanket over her head as her brows furrowed in distress.
After a while, her body trembled beneath the blanket, sobs escaping her lips.
The next day, Ava woke early. After breakfast, she attempted to call Mia again. But Mia didn't answer. Ava's worry grew. Mia lived alone now, could something have happened to her? Ava had sensed something was off the day before.
After some thought, Ava sent a text message to George.
Ava: [George, do you know where Mia is? Is she alright?]
As soon as the message was sent, George called back. Ava hurriedly answered, "Hello, George."
