Chapter 640 Unable to Connect

William had already made all the arrangements for their trip abroad tomorrow. They had agreed to leave in the afternoon.

Before leaving, Ava wanted to visit Scarlett because she didn't know when she would be back.

She planned to tell Scarlett everything and didn't want to hide anything anymore.

Ava and William had agreed that William would have dinner with his family, while Ava would have dinner with Scarlett. They would each take care of their own business.

In the evening, Ava drove to Scarlett's house. On the way, Ava received a phone call from an unknown number.

As soon as she answered, a frantic voice came through the phone. "Ava, is that you? It's your aunt."

Ava frowned. "How did you get my number?"

But as soon as she asked, Ava suddenly remembered.

When Evelyn had gone to the hospital, she helped Evelyn in completing the admission procedures, and left her phone number. It wasn't surprising that Evelyn could get her number.

"Ava, never mind that. Could you lend me some money?"

"I told you I wouldn't lend you money. You should pay off your own debts."

Lending money to Evelyn was like pouring water into a leaky bucket—it just kept disappearing.

"Ava, come on, I'm begging you, I swear this is the last time!"

"I don't buy into any of your promises. Folks like you never know when to stop. You've already squandered my parents' compensation and squeezed cash out of my grandma. Now, I am not  giving you a single cent. If that's all you want to say, I'm hanging up."

"No, wait!" Evelyn said eagerly, "Ava, please, I'm begging you. If you don't lend me money, I'm done for. Lend me a million dollars, and I swear I'll pay you back. I'm on my knees here, please help me, for the sake of your parents, please. I'm begging you!"

When Ava heard Evelyn's panicked voice, Ava sensed something was wrong and immediately asked, "Who do you owe money to?"

"Ava, please, please, lend me a million dollars. I'll do anything for you. I swear I'll never hit the tables again. Please, lend me a million dollars."

Hearing Evelyn's desperate voice, Ava wondered if she was in trouble. If she didn't lend her the million dollars, would Evelyn's life be at risk?

Upon closer inspection, however, this might just be Evelyn's scheme. As a skilled gambler, Evelyn was notorious for using any method for monetary benefit. If Ava gave her money today, it would establish a pattern of  endless requests in the future.

Such a pattern couldn't be allowed; once started, it would continue endlessly.

So, Ava gritted her teeth and said, "I'm not going to lend you any money. Solve your own problems. I have to go see Grandma and don't have time to talk to you."

With that, Ava hung up the phone.

A full minute passed after the call ended, and Ava started to feel more and more uneasy. Could Evelyn truly be in trouble?

If she owed money to some shady people, what if they threatened her life?

Ava really didn't want to help Evelyn. She was a gambler, a bottomless pit. No matter how much she helped, it would never be enough. This time she said she would change, but next time she would revert to the same behavior.

But she was wondering if she didn't help, what if her aunt died?

No matter what, she felt that she had to consider her father's feelings. After all, Evelyn was his sister.

With that in mind, Ava redialed Evelyn's number to ask for more information, but the phone message stated, "The number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."

It was just connected, and now it was unavailable? Ava felt increasingly uneasy. Could something have happened to her?
