Chapter 105 Numbness

Alexander responded with a nod, uttering a simple, "Yes." Could he have really responded any other way at this point?

"Fine," she replied, the bitterness of the word numbing her taste buds.

The night before, Alexander had been tenderly caring for her. He had returned today to explain himself, and she had slept beside him. They had appeared to be a loving couple, but now...

His emotional pendulum was driving her to the brink of insanity.

It was time for a divorce.

With a heavy heart concealed behind a stoic facade, Ava retrieved her phone from her pocket and dialed a number.

Soon, her voice rang out, a smile audible in her tone, "Grandma, it's me. How have you been feeling these past few days?

"I was thinking, Alex and I would come over to see you tomorrow, maybe join you for lunch, would that be okay?"

"Yes, we'll come by tomorrow at noon."

After ending the call, Ava turned to Alexander and proposed, "Let's plan it out. When we get there tomorrow, I'll keep Grandma busy while you sneak into her room and swipe the documents you need. After we get them, we can finalize the divorce and then put them back without anyone being the wiser, Grandma won't even know."

Alexander stared at her, silent and deep in thought.

Ava's face remained impassive as she continued, "Once we're divorced, you're free to marry Isabella, but you'll have to keep it low-key, so Grandma doesn't find out. If you two love each other so much, being together should be enough. A grand display is meaningless."

Her voice was as calm as the surface of a still pond, seemingly numb.

What else could she do?

Her husband wanted a divorce, no longer wished to live with her, and yearned to be with another woman. There was nothing left to salvage.

Despite the deep love she harbored for this man, love that ached in her heart, it was time to let go. Otherwise, it would hurt even more.

After a long pause, Alexander nodded. "Alright."

Ava tugged at the corners of her mouth, forcing a bittersweet smile. "Let's have dinner before it gets cold."

"You eating too?" he asked.

She shook her head. "No, I grabbed lunch earlier. There's not much food left for you, so take it easy. We still have dinner tonight."

He should eat less now to make room for the evening meal; otherwise, a heavy lunch would leave him no appetite, and he’d end up hungry again come midnight.

'What am I doing? Why am I still worrying about him, considering his needs so carefully, when he is ready to hurt me for the sake of another woman?' Ava thought to herself.

Alexander opened his mouth to speak, but Ava cut in, "You go eat; I'm going to read in my room."

After she entered and closed the door behind her, Alexander let out a sigh.

He headed to the dining room and saw the meal Ava left for him—everything he liked.

His heart ached suddenly, as if pierced by an unseen force.

She was thoughtful toward him, and yet he was planning to divorce her.

Would that guy, William, chase after her once they were divorced?

As a man, Alexander naturally understood what might run through another man’s mind.

His anger towards William being with Ava wasn't without reason. He saw something in William's eyes that didn't sit right.

The way William looked at Ava wasn't the way one looked at a friend. It was clearly something more...

The thought of them together gave Alexander a tight feeling in his chest and his hunger suddenly vanished.

But he had to eat the meal she prepared, even if begrudgingly.

The last time she brought two meals to his office, he had assumed that one was for him and the other, for Isabella.

The memory felt like a knife to his heart.

Ava enjoyed spicy food...
