Chapter 153 Walked away

"Miss Harrington, I suggest you refrain from laying a hand on me," Ava cautioned, her voice a tranquil yet menacing whisper. "Should any harm befall me due to your rough handling, particularly if I am with child, rest assured I will hold you accountable. We are alone in this room, and despite your reliance on Alex's protection, your beloved Mitchell family—"

Her words hung in the air as she locked eyes with Isabella, her gaze pure and innocent.

Isabella promptly withdrew her hand.

The last thing she needed was to be implicated in any of Ava's schemes. Yet, the question lingered—was Ava genuinely expecting?

Ava's demeanor didn't suggest she was harboring such a secret. If she were indeed pregnant, she would likely be unabashedly parading the fact, desperately imploring Alex not to abandon her. Why, then, was she lurking in the shadows?

Perhaps she was merely suffering from indigestion or had consumed something that disagreed with her.

Ava shot Isabella an icy look, pushed the door open, and exited the restroom with a determined stride.

Donning her flats, Ava moved with purpose. She cast a glance in William's direction and made a beeline for him, intending to leave the restaurant.

However, a sudden bout of dizziness overcame her. Her vision blurred, her legs gave way, and she began to tumble sideways.

The anticipated pain, however, never arrived.

Instead, she found herself cradled in a pair of strong, gentle arms. As she blinked her eyes open, the world slowly came back into focus.

Alexander was holding her, his brow furrowed with worry.

"Ava, what's wrong?" he inquired, his voice laced with concern.

William quickly intervened, "Alexander, release her."

Ignoring him, Alexander addressed Ava, "I'm taking you to the hospital."

The prospect of a hospital visit was unacceptable.

Ava quickly regained her footing and pushed him away with such force that she stumbled backward into William.

William steadied her, his voice filled with concern, "Ava, are you alright?"

"I'm fine, we need to leave."

Staying would risk Alex uncovering her secret.

If he ever found out about her pregnancy, there was no question he would reject the child. His position on the matter had been made painfully clear during their last encounter at his grandmother's house.

"Alright," William agreed, offering his arm for support. As they prepared to depart, Alex caught up to them, "Wait, release my wife!"

William's brow furrowed, ready to retort, when Isabella's voice sliced through the tension, "Alex."

Isabella approached Alexander, linking her arm with his.

Upon witnessing this, Ava's lips curled into a frosty smirk, "Mr. Mitchell, do take good care of the woman you love. As I've mentioned before, you no longer hold any sway over my life."

With a pointed emphasis on "no longer hold any sway," Ava, assisted by William, exited the restaurant.

“Alex,” Isabella murmured, nestling into his side, “I’m not feeling well. Could you take me home?”

William watched in stunned silence as Ava disappeared from sight.

The phrase 'no longer hold any sway,' echoed relentlessly in his mind.

He considered taking Ava to the hospital for a check-up, but noting her exhaustion, he decided to take her home instead.

Upon reaching her doorstep, Ava turned to him with an apologetic expression. “I’m sorry, I thought we could spend more time together after dinner, but I didn’t anticipate feeling so tired.”

“It’s fine, your health is the priority. Rest up, and once you’re feeling better, we can do whatever you want.”

Ava nodded in agreement, hesitated, then suggested, “You should head back and rest as well. I’ll be okay. Take care.”

Once back in her room, Ava felt a wave of fatigue wash over her. After a quick shower, she climbed into bed, ready for an early night.

However, her plans were interrupted by a knock at the door.

Blinking her eyes open, Ava called out, "Who is it?"

"It's me, Ava."

Taken aback, Ava sat up abruptly. Why had he returned? Wasn’t he with Isabella?

The silence in the room was shattered by his voice once more.

"About today at the resort..."

"Enough," Ava interrupted him sharply. “I’m tired and need to sleep. Please don’t disturb me, thank you.”

Alexander stood outside the door, his hand resting against the wood, silent for a long while before he sighed and walked away.
