Chapter 700 Exhausted in Body and Mind
The ward was dead quiet. Alexander lay alone on the bed, staring blankly out the window.
Sunlight streamed through, casting a glow on his pale face. He looked like a ghost—bloodless, hollow-eyed, and utterly worn out.
He was silent, like a walking corpse.
Even when the doctor came to check on him, he didn't say a word.
Mia walked in. She visited Alexander every day.
He stayed silent, still staring out the window.
Mia sat in the chair by his bed and set her bag down.
She picked up an apple from the plate. "Let me peel this for you."
Alexander didn't respond, didn't even glance at her, like she wasn't there.
Mia sighed inwardly and started peeling the apple with a fruit knife.
As she worked, she said, "I don't know what happened, and you won't tell me. I don't even know who brought you to the hospital, but I know something went down between you and Ava."
Mia sighed deeply. "Alexander, I talked to Ava on the phone last night."
Alexander's brow furrowed. He turned his head, looking at her coldly. "Do you want me to die?"
Mia was startled. "Of course not."
"Did you tell her where I am?"
Mia nodded. "Yes, I told her."
Alexander gritted his teeth, seething. "Am I even your son? You all treat my words like they're nothing. I told you not to say anything, but you just had to. Are you trying to drive me crazy?"
Ava's name was now a piercing pain to him, like venom, bringing him heart-wrenching agony.
Mia quickly put down the fruit knife and apple. "Alexander, I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have told her. But do you know? Ava is now..."
Mia wanted to tell Alexander that Ava was pregnant, almost five months along, and she was having surgery tomorrow. She only told Ava because of this.
But if she told Alexander now, she couldn't imagine how he would react to the news that his ex-wife had been pregnant for so long and was about to have surgery, and he had to hear it from someone else. He might go crazy.
This matter had to be told by Ava herself.
Seeing Mia's hesitation, Alexander spoke, "How is she?"
In the end, he couldn't help but worry about her.
Hearing she might encounter the slightest hint of trouble, he panicked.
Mia said, "When she talked to me on the phone last night, she cried so hard that she could barely breathe."
Hearing Ava cry, Alexander imagined the scene.
His heart ached.
What was the pain of his wounds compared to this? The real pain was in his soul.
"Those are just crocodile tears, fake." Alexander closed his eyes and turned his head to the side.
He no longer dared to believe.
Mia never thought there would be a day when Ava's tears wouldn't make Alexander feel heartache.
Mia was puzzled, thinking, 'He cared so much about Ava, willing to give everything for her, but now he seems so disappointed in her.'
'What exactly happened between them? How could he have such a change?'
"Why is she crying? Because she cares about you and is looking for you everywhere," Mia said.
Previously, Ava had been hurt physically and mentally by Alexander, and Mia had seen it with her own eyes.
