Chapter 349 Do Me a Favor
Before Ava had the chance to compose her response, an incoming call interrupted her. The number flashing on her screen was unfamiliar. Nevertheless, Ava picked up the call, greeting the caller with a simple, "Hello."
From the other end of the line, the calm voice of a middle-aged man resonated. "Ms. Anderson, it's me." The voice was unmistakable; she had heard it earlier that day. It was the voice of William's father.
Ava's heart skipped a beat as she recognized the voice. "Mr. Bennett?" she questioned, her voice barely above a whisper.
"You used to call me Uncle Dalton, but why are you calling me Mr. Bennett now?" Dalton's voice was steady, a stark contrast to the indifference he had shown when speaking to William earlier.
Ava remained silent, her mind whirling. She must have misheard. Why was Dalton's voice suddenly so calm, so kind?
Sensing Ava's surprise, Dalton reassured her, "Don't worry. I'm not calling to scold you."
Confused, Ava asked, "What's going on?"
Dalton asked, "Is William still with you?"
"He has already left. After receiving your call, he immediately went to work," Ava informed him, adding, "He's actually very hardworking and excellent."
"It seems you admire him," Dalton noted, his voice devoid of sarcasm or anger. If one listened closely, they might even detect a hint of a smile in his tone.
"Yes," Ava admitted, "He is a man worth admiring. You have a very exceptional son."
"Haha," Dalton laughed.
Hearing Dalton's robust laughter, Ava found it hard to reconcile with the image of the furious man ready to physically harm his own son. The merciless figure she had witnessed earlier seemed to have been replaced by a kind elder.
Was this a result of Dalton's fickle nature or was there another reason?
"It seems like you really like my son," Dalton commented.
Ava felt a surge of nervousness. She was afraid Dalton would misunderstand, so she quickly clarified, "William and I are good friends, we only have friendship between us."
"Is that so? You are just good friends? You probably don't know that William has recently been neglecting his work because of a woman. When I confronted him about it, he refused to tell me who that woman was, no matter what. Ms. Anderson, that woman is you, isn't it?"
"Mr. Bennett, you have misunderstood," Ava said, "That woman is not me. William and I are just friends, please don't misunderstand."
"Oh, really? How do you know she is not you?" Dalton asked.
Ava said, "Because William told me himself that he likes someone else."
"Well, what's her name then?" Dalton pressed on.
"I'm sorry," Ava said, "I can't tell you. If William hasn't told you, I definitely can't say."
She felt that if Dalton truly wanted to find out, he would be able to.
"Alright." Dalton did not press her further. "Regardless, you have a good relationship with my son."
"Mr. Bennett, did you call me just to tell me this? Do you have something else to say? You can directly tell me." Ava was curious about Dalton's true intentions, especially since he had made it clear that he did not call to scold her.
"Well, I will tell you directly. How do you know Ms. Thompson from Fengliqi Bank?" Dalton asked.
"Is that important?" Ava said. "And besides, I don't think I have an obligation to answer you."
Dalton remained unflustered. "I'm just curious, and I want your help."
Ava couldn't help but smile as she replied, "Mr. Bennett, you are an important person. Why would you need someone like me, a nobody, to help you? You must be joking."
