Chapter 266 Surprise and Delight
"It's actually quite nice," Ava Anderson's eyes twinkled with sparkles, "Being so reserved before was just too exhausting, so now I don't want to be that tired."
Being joyful was good, but in this world, many people were swayed by negative emotions.
Everyone knew that whether you were happy or not, the day would pass all the same. Yet knowing that and actually living by it were two different things.
From the depths of Ava Anderson's eyes, Alexander Mitchell caught a glimpse of her desire to let go completely, and it caused a pang in his heart.
He realized he was a jerk.
The whole point of the divorce was to set Ava Anderson free.
Now that they were divorced, she could be happy. She no longer had to endure the marriage.
But the moment she truly moved on, he felt a twinge of regret.
It wasn't just a little regret; perhaps it was much more.
Yet he dared not follow that train of thought, frightened that the more he contemplated it, the more emotions he would uncover that he was afraid to face.
After some time, Alexander Mitchell calmed his emotions and managed a light smile, "Yeah, you deserve to be happy every single day."
Ava Anderson responded with a silent smile.
"Ava, why don't you go freshen up and rest," he suggested.
"Are you going to be okay on your own?" Ava Anderson asked, a bit worried. She feared he would toss and turn all night in bed.
It had been like that before. He never stayed put while asleep. Unknowingly, he would roll over and inadvertently press on an injury on his back, and then he would wake up in pain, crying out.
"I'm fine, don't worry about me, but..." Alexander Mitchell paused, "Never mind."
"But what?" Ava Anderson sensed he was holding something back, "If there's something on your mind, you can tell me directly. There's no need for us to keep secrets anymore."
After all, they were divorced.
The past secrecy had been too draining on the heart.
Alexander Mitchell tugged at the corner of his mouth, "I was going to suggest that if you don't mind, we could sleep in the same room. But then I suddenly remembered we are divorced, and it seems inappropriate."
Even now, Alexander Mitchell hadn't fully moved on from their marriage. Sometimes it hit him out of the blue that they were divorced.
He would catch himself instinctively thinking of her as his wife.
It seemed almost laughable; he was like a man with intermittent amnesia, or perhaps he just didn't want to remember that they were already divorced.
Ava Anderson gave an awkward smile.
It was a bit inappropriate indeed.
Seeing that Ava Anderson didn't speak, Alexander Mitchell realized how ridiculous his words must have sounded. "Ava, you go rest, I'll be fine on my own."
Ava Anderson turned her head and glanced at the couch in the bedroom to her right. She had an idea and said to Alexander Mitchell, "How about this—I'll stay here tonight as well. I can sleep on the couch. That way, if you have any trouble during the night, I can help you."
She was worried that Alexander would roll over in his sleep and aggravate his wounds, which would hinder his recovery.
She wouldn't be at ease if he wasn't getting better.
After all, it was because of her that Grandma had beaten Alexander up this badly; she felt somewhat responsible.
"Would that be okay? Will it disturb your rest?"
When Ava proposed staying, his first reaction was a mixture of delight and secret pleasure.
Ava shook her head, "Not at all. Since I've already offered, it certainly won't disturb me. If you'd rather I didn't stay, that's fine."
"I want you to stay." Alexander Mitchell, afraid that she might leave, quickly grabbed her wrist. "Whatever you say goes, or else I'll sleep on the couch and you can have the bed."
