Chapter 250 She's Not Right

"I am indeed separated from Alex. I don’t live here anymore. I came over to pick up some stuff and thought I’d check on Alex while I was at it," Ava Anderson explained.

Mia Thompson raised an eyebrow. "Really? You just happen to drop by to see him and, while you're at it, happen to leave the door open and get cozy with him?"

Ava Anderson's face flushed. "Mom, DadMom, it's really not what you think. I…"

"Enough with the explanations," Mia Thompson cut her off. "Regardless of the circumstances, you two being all over each other is a fact. If you can’t stand to be apart, then why go through with the divorce?"

"I…" Ava Anderson was at a loss, struggling to find a polite response to Mia Thompson's confrontational tone.

"Cat got your tongue? Or is it that you're looking for thrills? After the divorce, you’re free to play the field while still having your fun with Alex?"

Mia Thompson's voice took on an almost mocking tone.

Ava Anderson felt an uncomfortable twist in her stomach. She furrowed her brow slightly, trying to remain composed and polite. "I didn't mean it like that, and I don't know why you would think so, but I have a clear conscience."

She had only ever been with one man, Alexander Mitchell. Despite having nothing to hide, the feeling of being misunderstood was deeply unsettling.
"You sure have the nerve," Mia Thompson's peripheral vision seemed to catch something before she retracted her gaze nonchalantly, her voice cold and merciless, "I used to think you were decent, but now I see you're nothing special. You're already divorced, and yet you keep hassling my son. Can't even keep the door closed in broad daylight, have you no shame?"

Ava Anderson felt as if her heart had plummeted off a cliff.

What had gotten into her mother-in-law today?

She had become so sharp-tongued, like those malicious mothers-in-law.

But that wasn't the Mia Thompson she knew. Before, she had appeared wise, but today she seemed like a different person.

George Mitchell opened his mouth, seemingly with something to say, but when he caught sight of Mia Thompson's icy demeanor, he choked down his words, not daring to speak any further.

He looked absolutely defeated.

Taking a deep breath, Ava Anderson composed herself, considering that maybe Mia Thompson was simply in a bad mood, or perhaps someone had offended her—or maybe it was Ava's divorce from Alexander Mitchell that had upset her.

One way or another, she didn't belong there anymore.

"Sorry, I've got things to do, I should be going," Ava said as she made to leave, but Han Xi suddenly spoke up: "Stop right there."

Her tone was fierce.

Ava stopped in her tracks and turned around, her brows furrowing, "What is it now?"

She was already divorced from Alexander Mitchell, and if anyone from the Mitchell family sought to trouble her, she wasn't going to endure it quietly.

She didn't want to cause a scene here, but if pushed, she might lose control.

"If you leave now, Alex will think I drove you away. Are you trying to ruin the relationship between my son and me?" Mia's voice was charged with severity, her eyebrows tightly knit and her eyes brimming with anger.

George Mitchell could tell something was off with Mia too; the old lady adored Ava Anderson, and would surely be furious if she knew how harshly Mia was treating her.

He tried to appease, "Mia, Ava didn't mean anything by it, she was just..."

"Shut up!" Mia cut him off sharply, "Did I even address you? Why butt in?"

In front of Mia Thompson, George Mitchell's male pride crumbled away.

He tugged at the corner of his mouth helplessly, ultimately holding his tongue. He gave Ava an "I'm at my wit's end" look and heaved a gentle sigh.
