Chapter 214 He Wouldn't Allow It

Alexander's eyes narrowed, a chilling hardness reflecting in them. "Is it appropriate for a married woman to be here? You mustn't forget, you are still my wife," he said with a steely tone.

Ava retorted, "We're getting divorced tomorrow, remember?"

His response was swift and sharp, "It's today, not tomorrow."

With a sudden movement, Alexander seized the iron gate, shaking it violently. The loud rattling startled Ava, causing her to stumble backward several steps. Her face was a mask of panic.

Seeing the fear in her eyes, Alexander realized he had frightened her. He quickly reined in his anger and released the gate. "As long as we are not officially divorced, even if it's just for a minute, you remain Mrs. Mitchell. What business do you have staying overnight at another man's house?"

"Really?" Ava scoffed. "And what about you? Rushing off to be with another woman the moment she calls, staying out all night. How does that look for a married man?"

"It's not the same. Isabella was ill, I had to go to the hospital! But you and William? It seems you two have been more than just friends for a while!"

Ava's heart skipped a beat, and her eyes widened in surprise. "What are you talking about? When have I ever been involved with him? We're just friends, don't slander me!"

Alexander was just ridiculous. He was clearly entangled with Isabella, yet had the audacity to accuse her!

"Slander you? Ha," Alexander clenched his fists. "Didn't you tell me that you first met William in college? I asked you again, and you said the same. You've been lying to me. You knew him long before that."

Ava felt a tightness in her chest and looked at him in disbelief. "What do you mean by that?"

"Do you really not understand what I'm saying? On your birthday, all dolled up, having dinner with him," he sneered with a dose of sarcasm. "No wonder, if you two have been seeing each other, of course, you'd want him with you on your birthday!"

Ava felt her head buzzing as if struck by something, likely because Ethan had told what happened that day to Alexander.

"Why the silence? Feeling guilty?" Alexander's face was livid, his jaw clenched tight.

"What do I have to feel guilty about?" Ava met his gaze fearlessly. "Yes, I had dinner with William on my birthday. It was our first meeting. The restaurant was fully booked, so we ended up sharing a table. Ethan must have misunderstood." Ava paused, then added, "When I told you it was our first meeting at the university, it was to avoid any misunderstanding on your part."

"Misunderstanding, are you sure?" A smirk, cold and mocking, curled at the corners of Alexander's lips. He didn't buy it one bit.

"Believe it or not, Alexander, that's the truth. I've got nothing to lie about. We're getting a divorce anyway. I have no desire to win you back. Why would I lie to you?"

With a loud bang, he balled his fist and slammed it against the metal door, creating a resounding echo. He was like a trapped beast prodded into rage, desperate to break free.

Ava took a deep breath, fighting to keep the panic at bay. "Leave, please. We'll meet at the city hall at nine tomorrow." This was her last night of anger because of him, tired of his baseless accusations.

"Come home with me," Alexander demanded gruffly. "Tonight, I won't allow you to stay here!"

He surmised she must have arrived the night before. Had he known, he never would have let Ava come here. His wife spending the night with another man, even though they were divorcing, was more than Alexander could stomach. Whether it was male possessiveness or a deep-seated flaw, he simply wouldn't allow it!
