Chapter 753 Not Helping Them
Vicky asked hesitantly, "Dad, are you saying you and Mom have wanted to divorce for a long time, but you were just waiting for my brother and me to grow up?"
Dalton stayed silent.
His silence said it all.
Vicky sighed. "If that's true, why did you marry Mom in the first place? Did you love her?"
She pressed on, "If it was love, why did you stop loving her? If you never loved her, why marry her at all?"
Dalton had no answers.
He had never told his kids the truth about his marriage to Hailey.
Seeing his silence, Vicky realized Mandy was probably right.
Dalton and Hailey's marriage was all about profit; he used her to get ahead.
He never loved Hailey, so he never treated her like a lover.
Now, with nothing holding him back, he divorced her without a second thought.
How could he be so cold?
"Vicky, this isn't something you should be asking. You're grown up now, and you'll understand a lot more in the future," Dalton said.
Vicky scoffed, "What do you want me to understand? How to use someone, drain their value, and then toss them aside?"
Dalton's brow furrowed. "What do you mean by that? Did someone say something to you? Was it your mom?"
Could Hailey be badmouthing him after the divorce?
Even though he didn't love Hailey, he knew her well enough. She didn't seem like the type to speak ill of him.
If she was really that bitter, she wouldn't have divorced him. Why badmouth him to their kids after the fact?
"My mom didn't say anything to me." Vicky clenched her fists, angry. "You know Mom well. She's put up with everything all these years, but I can see her pain. Dad, Mom truly loves you. She thinks of you in everything. How could you be so heartless to such a woman..."
"Vicky." Dalton cut her off, glaring. "Before I get angry, stop talking. This is between your mom and me. We're already divorced. There's no point in dragging it out."
Vicky was taken aback by his stern look.
She knew he was ruthless. If she really pushed him, even though she was his daughter, he wouldn't let it slide.
Vicky had more questions, but she didn't dare say anything and stayed quiet.
Although she was his daughter, Dalton still put his own thoughts first.
He wouldn't have a heart-to-heart with her or be honest.
Seeing Vicky's expression, Dalton sighed and reached out to touch the back of her head.
He said, "Your mom is a good woman. I'm very grateful for her companionship all these years, but we have no feelings left, so we divorced. If we stayed married, your mom wouldn't be happy either. Now she's free and can do whatever she wants. I promise you, no matter what happens to your mom in the future, I'll always help her. Although we can't be husband and wife, we can still be family."
He and Hailey had divorced amicably without making a scene. They had tried to reconcile, but then William had an accident, and they came back to where they were. It seemed even God wasn't helping them.
