Chapter 142 Where Did I Do Wrong?

Aware of Ava's heightened emotional state, William opted to keep his distance, not wishing to exacerbate the situation. He stood silently behind her, a quiet pillar of support.

Ava, turning around, latched onto William's arm. "William, let's depart," she implored. The atmosphere was too much for her to bear; she was utterly drained.

As Ava made to exit with William, Alexander stepped forward, his voice a low murmur, "Ava."

"Alexander!" Ava's head whipped around, her gaze icy as it landed on him. The affection that once resided in her eyes for him had long since evaporated. "You and Isabella can revel in your sordid affair. Our marriage henceforth exists in name only. I shall not meddle in your affairs, and I expect the same courtesy from you."

She was utterly disillusioned with the man before her!

With a firm grip on William, Ava strode away, leaving Alexander rooted to the spot, his feet seemingly weighed down by unseen boulders, incapable of pursuing her. He could only watch helplessly as her figure receded into the distance, a sight that suggested she would never return.

"Alex." Isabella rushed over, tears streaming down her face, her hands cupping his face with concern. "Are you alright? You're bleeding, I'll fetch a doctor."

"I don't require one." Alexander brushed her hands away, his gaze frosty as he turned to face her. "Isabella, what transpired?"

"What?" Isabella blinked at him, her confusion evident.

"You know precisely what I'm referring to. Why were you in bed with me?"

"I... um..." Isabella stuttered, her words stumbling over each other.

Observing her evasive gaze and guilty demeanor, Alexander's suspicion was piqued. "Did you tamper with my coffee?"

He recalled feeling an overwhelming drowsiness after finishing his coffee, and when he awoke, the ensuing chaos had already unfolded.

"I..." Isabella nervously fiddled with the hem of her dress.

Confronted with the truth, she confessed, "Yes, I added a sleeping pill to your coffee."

A wave of anger and confusion washed over Alexander, his face a mask of disbelief. "Why would you do such a thing?"

They had always maintained separate quarters and never shared a bed. Yet, on this particular day, everything had spiraled out of control, and Ava had walked in on them. It was enough to arouse Alexander's suspicion.

Isabella trembled under his wrathful gaze. "Alex, I've noticed your exhaustion lately, your nightly drinking without proper rest. I was concerned for your health, so I added a sleeping pill to your coffee, hoping it would aid your sleep. I meant no harm."

"Is that so? Then why did you end up in bed beside me?" he questioned, his tone skeptical and tinged with anger.

The mistrust in his eyes sparked a whirlwind of anger and sorrow within Isabella. "Alex, what's wrong with me sleeping by your side? I know you're not yet divorced, but does it truly matter? Our relationship is no secret. I love you deeply, and I wanted to be in the arms of the man I adore. What’s wrong with that? For years, I've watched you marry Ava, observed the complexities of your marriage, all while I was alone. Now, I just wanted to sleep beside you, to feel the warmth of the man I love. Is that a crime?"

Tears streaming down her face, Isabella crumpled to the ground, her body shaking as she hugged her knees. "Is it wrong to love you? Weren't you going to marry me? What did I do wrong?"
