Chapter 596 People Were Prone to Change

"Miss Harrington and Mr. Mitchell seemed to be a good match. You must have known each other for quite some time," William asked.

"Yes," Isabella said, "Alex and I have been acquainted for a long time."

"Have you known each other for a decade?" William pressed further, looking puzzled. "Ava, you have known Mr. Mitchell for ten years, right?"

The atmosphere grew tense. Ava gently squeezed William's hand, signaling him to stop talking.

Seeing Alexander's displeased look, William felt a sudden sense of satisfaction.

"Waiter," William called out.

Manager Richard approached with a waiter in tow.

Ava noticed the waiter behind Richard and was slightly stunned, a flicker of flicker in her eyes. "It's you."

Elinor was also caught off guard. "Hello, Ms. Anderson, Mr. Bennett."

Elinor hadn't expected to run into them here. Alexander glanced at Elinor. "You know each other?"

Ava glanced at William, opened her mouth to say something, but hesitated because she didn't want to say much with Alexander and Isabella present.

William looked at Ava, confused. "What's wrong?"

He looked at Elinor, finding her somewhat familiar but unable to place her. He even felt she wasn't worth remembering.

Elinor looked puzzled. She thought, 'It seems William doesn't recognize me at all, but it is understandable. Our last meeting was quite awkward.'

She recalled their last meeting. William had pretended to have a crush on a girl named Elinor, and since her name was Elinor, she got roped into the act. She suspected he probably liked Ava.

Ava replied, "It's nothing. I met Elinor before. I didn't expect to see her here."

"Oh, I see," Richard said, "She's our best waitress here. She'll be serving you."

Ava nodded. "Alright."

They each picked up a menu.

"William, what do you want to eat?"

"What do you want?" William asked.

Ava glanced at the menu. "I'll have whatever you choose. I'll eat anything you order."

This time, she wanted to follow William's lead.

William looked at the menu. "How about the roast lamb? It looks delicious."

When Ava heard that, she hesitated but still nodded. "Alright, I'll..."

Alexander closed his menu. "Don't you know that Ava doesn't like lamb?"

William frowned slightly and looked at Ava. "Really? You don't like lamb?"

Ava gave an awkward smile. "No, lamb is fine."

Ava was trying to ease the awkward atmosphere, but Alexander wouldn't let it go. He coldly said, "You've never liked lamb. Once, I ordered lamb for you, and you almost threw up. Do you forget? You can't stand the taste of lamb."

Alexander didn't care about anyone's feelings. He was mocking William for not even knowing Ava's preferences, implying he didn't understand her at all and had no right to marry her.

Ava's smile stiffened slightly. She then looked at Alexander with a cold stare. "Mr. Mitchell, people are prone to change. They can't stay the same forever. You, of all people, should know that, right?"
