Chapter 22 You've Been Holding Back, Haven't You?

Ava was fuming. Why was it always her mentioning the divorce? If he wanted to be with someone else, why keep up the act of being a good husband?

People stopped and stared when they heard her outburst. Alexander's face turned dark. He grabbed Ava's hand and pulled her away, leaving a trail of tension in the air.

The car ride was unbearably tense. The driver kept quiet, sensing the heavy mood. Ava felt the pressure too. Alexander's eyes burned with intensity. "You've been holding back for a long time, haven't you?"

Ava clutched her clothes, her face pale.

"Why aren't you answering? You've been happy about the divorce from the start, haven't you?" Alexander's face grew even darker.

"Ever since Felix brought you the divorce papers, you are happy, right? I don't want to say this again. We're not divorced yet. No matter who you love or why you're putting up with me until we're officially divorced, I'm still your husband. Besides, Grandma doesn't know about this yet. Even for her sake, you can't let her be heartbroken." Alexander's face was filled with barely contained anger.

"Come on! You asked for a divorce. Since then, I've been cooperating with you. I even planned to tell Grandma that I was the one who wanted the divorce and that I only married you out of respect for her. I will also tell her even though you've been good to me, I haven't been happy with you. And the divorce isn't your fault; it's because I love someone else. Grandma loves me dearly. If she hears this from me, she won't blame you."

Even though they were getting divorced, Ava still thought about Alexander, trying to make sure Scarlett wouldn't blame him. But he always made it seem like she was the one who fell for another man and was scheming to leave him for someone who didn't even exist.

A deep sense of helplessness enveloped Ava. From the start of this marriage, she knew it would end someday. She tried hard to manage her feelings, not wanting to get lost in his occasional tenderness. What did she do wrong?

Alexander almost laughed but seemed to be holding something back. After a long pause, he spoke darkly, "Why do I feel like this is what is really happening?"

She thought of him wholeheartedly, but he twisted her thoughts into her true desire. Was he deliberately misinterpreting her to justify ending the marriage?

"Why aren't you answering? Have you been holding back for a long time?" His tone was even heavier this time, as if forcing her to answer, to admit it.

"I..."

She had been holding back for a long time—holding back from confessing her love, from telling him he was her only one, from telling him she was pregnant, from sharing her joy and helplessness as a mother-to-be, and her fear of their child growing up without a father.

She had been holding back for a long time because he had said before their marriage that he couldn't give her love and that they could divorce at any time. If this long, drawn-out crush, starting from her youthful days, was a marathon, she had long since collapsed, exhausted, halfway through.
