Alexander was chill as a cucumber, like he was born that way, like nothing could shake him.
Madison looked at him like she'd just seen a ghost, her eyes empty, like someone had turned off the lights.
“What about me? What about all the stuff between us, and everything you did to me? My heart, my body, what do they mean to you?” Madison asked, her voice dripping with pain.
Every word she said was like a knife twisting in her gut.
Alexander looked down, a flicker of guilt in his eyes.
“I'm really sorry for what I did to you.” He reached out and gently wiped her tears. “Thanks for being willing to take Ava's place and keep me warm.”
“Take Ava's place.” Madison felt like the ground had just dropped out from under her.
So she was just a stand-in, never really Madison to him.
Whether he kissed her, hugged her, or said he loved her.
Even when they were in the tub together, with him holding her from behind and kissing her ear, his mind was full of Ava.
No wonder he always liked being behind her.
That way, he didn't have to look at her face. Everything he did was pretending she was Ava.

“Don't go!” Madison grabbed him from behind. “Please don't go, okay? You already have me. I can be your stand-in. Ava has her husband. He'll find her. Please, don't jump back into the fire again, okay?”
Alexander had finally crawled out of the fire bit by bit. Even if he only saw her as a stand-in, it meant he was starting a new life. But now he was going back to find her.
If he found Ava, everything would be for nothing, and he'd have to start the painful cycle all over again.
Madison even suspected Ava had disappeared on purpose to make Alexander care about her and go find her.
