Chapter 760 He Deserves It

Alexander showed up at Ethan's place without a word to anyone. Not even his parents. They'd just try to comfort him, and he was done with that.

"Ethan, remember a few months back, before I divorced Ava? I got drunk at your place, and you brought Ava over," Alexander said.

"Yeah, I remember. You even punched me. I was so mad. If you weren't my buddy, I'd have hit you back," Ethan replied, clenching his fists.

"You know, I really value our friendship," Ethan said. "If I didn't, I'd have cut you off a long time ago."

"Do you remember why I hit you?" Alexander asked.

"Of course. Ava came over, you were drunk, and we argued. When you woke up, you thought I was bullying Isabella and hit me. You were protecting her, not Ava," Ethan said, scratching his head.

Alexander gave a bitter smile. "Yeah, I remember. After I hit you, I called out Isabella's name."

He suddenly realized he hadn't seen Isabella in a while. He wondered how she was doing. After he canceled the wedding, she must have been heartbroken and angry.

"You're such a jerk," Ethan added. "I thought you were a real jerk back then. Ava was your wife, and you mistook her for another woman. You even called out another woman's name while holding her hand. I was so pissed."

"That's exactly what happened," Alexander admitted.

Ethan continued, "You're a jerk, and you deserve what you're going through now. You insisted on divorcing Ava and marrying Isabella. No one could stop you."

"Now you're regretting it, right? Ava's got a new man now, doesn't she? Are you happy?"

Ethan finally got to vent, feeling a bit of satisfaction. But then he noticed Alexander wasn't saying anything.

He started to worry, thinking, 'Did I go too far?'

'Oh no, is he gonna do something drastic?'

'But he deserves it. He insisted on divorcing Ava and marrying Isabella. Now that Ava's moved on, it's his own fault.'

'Even though we're friends, Ava's married to William now. It's only natural for her to protect her husband, right?'

'Plus, it was the kidnappers who hurt Alexander. Shouldn't he be mad at them first?' Ethan thought.

'Ava faced a heart-wrenching choice, knowing she'd inevitably disappoint one side.'

'But I can't say that out loud. Alexander's in a bad place. If I push too hard, he might do something drastic. That'd be on me.'

Ethan's thoughts shifted. 'I get it, though. The woman he loves chose someone else when it mattered most. That must hurt like hell.'

'But he brought this on himself. He didn't appreciate Ava when he had her.'

"Are you cursing me in your head?" Alexander asked, almost reading Ethan's mind.

Ethan felt a pang of guilt and stammered, "No, I wasn't thinking that at all."

Alexander gave a bitter smile. "It's okay. I deserve it. I know that now."

"Alexander, you messed up, but you've also had some bad luck. You're obsessed with her. Otherwise, you wouldn't have risked your life for your ex-wife after the divorce. If she gave you another chance, you'd treat her right. It's just a shame..."

Ethan was still shocked that Ava, who seemed so gentle and weak, had moved on so completely. No matter how hard Alexander tried, she wouldn't take him back. Now she was married to another man. It blew Ethan's mind.

"Actually, I didn't mistake her for Isabella that day. I knew she was Ava," Alexander confessed.

"What did you say?" Ethan looked at him, confused.

Alexander met his gaze. "The day I hit you, I knew she was Ava. But I had already filed for divorce, so I called out Isabella's name on purpose. I thought if I did that, Ava would divorce me for good and not have any lingering feelings."

Ethan was speechless. If he'd known what Alexander was thinking back then, he would've punched him himself.

Alexander really did deserve it.

As his friend, Ethan had felt sorry for him. But he also thought Alexander had it coming.
