Chapter 157 She's Too Lucky
"Grandma, loving someone can be likened to a moth drawn to a flame. It's a path from which there is no return, and yet, one plunges headlong into it, oblivious to the lurking danger. Perhaps that's how Alex feels about Isabella," Ava ventured to explain.
In this world, some loves were reckless and heedless of consequences.
"Are you genuinely seeking this divorce, or are you merely acquiescing to Alex due to Isabella's presence?" Scarlett questioned.
"Grandma, I am the one seeking the divorce. Even if Isabella were to vanish suddenly, my decision would remain unchanged. It's not about her anymore. My discontent stems from being with Alex," Ava clarified.
Concerned that Scarlett might misconstrue her words, Ava continued, "It's not that Alex hasn't been kind to me, I... I'm just exhausted. Grandma, I yearn for my freedom, I no longer wish to be bound to a man. From now on, I want to be the master of my own emotions."
Having endured so much, she was truly worn down.
She had contemplated divorce multiple times, yet unforeseen circumstances always seemed to intervene. She clung to a faint hope that perhaps even fate didn’t want them to part. But now, she had to admit to herself that she simply couldn't endure any longer.
Even if Isabella were to abruptly depart, and Alex suddenly had a change of heart, she no longer wished to cling to hope.
Scarlett could empathize with Ava's turmoil!
Though she was advanced in years, she had once been young herself and understood that kind of feeling.
Once a man was bewitched, it was futile to attempt to persuade him otherwise until he discerned the truth for himself.
Scarlett turned her head and instructed the butler, "Mike, please bring the documents here."
"Of course," Uncle Mike responded as he turned to leave.
A short while later, he returned with the documents in hand.
Accepting the documents from him, Scarlett's voice was slightly hoarse, "Ava, this... I want you to have it."
"Grandma..." Ava had never anticipated receiving the documents in such a manner, handed over willingly by the elderly woman.
Scarlett was clearly pained, "Ava, I was aware that you attempted to take the documents, and I even knew you stole the key."
"I'm sorry, Grandma. I didn't mean to. I am truly sorry."
Ava hung her head in shame.
The elderly woman had known all of her little schemes but had never confronted her about them.
Scarlett softened, "I don't blame you. I understand. It's my fault. I believed you two would be happy, that you were a good match. That's why I made the decision. My intentions were good, but it turned out like this."Scarlett's only regret was causing Ava heartache.
"Grandma, I know you wished for our happiness. Your heart was in the right place. We don't blame you."
Scarlett wiped away her tears, "Well, the documents are yours now. I won't hold on to them for you. After you divorce Alex, you'll likely move out, and by then..."
"Grandma." Ava was at a loss for words. After divorcing Alexander, she wouldn't be part of the Mitchell family anymore.
To be precise, she never truly was a Mitchell. Without the old lady's kindness, where would she have gotten such opportunities and education over the years?
It wasn't her diligence or intelligence that had gotten her to where she was today. It was pure luck to have met the old lady.
Tears that Ava had been holding back now broke free. Upon seeing the certificates where the name Alexander was inscribed set them rushing uncontrollably down her cheeks.
"Don't cry, didn't I give you the certificates? Go on and do what you want to do," Scarlett encouraged.
"Grandma," Ava embraced her, "I'm sorry for letting you down, for not making you happy."
"My dear child, seeing you live a good life is all that makes me happy. No matter what happens in the future, I just want you safe and sound. Do what you wish to do. Whether or not you can be with Alex, I won't insist anymore. All I want is your happiness. I've always been aware of certain things, just clung to a slight hope, pretending not to see, wanting you two to be together. In the end, I realized it's you who have suffered. I apologize for that."
Tears streamed down Scarlett's face while Ava sobbed uncontrollably.
