Chapter 134 He's Gone
The morning meal concluded, Ava engaged in idle chatter with Scarlett for a while longer before bidding her farewell. Her driver, a silent figure, ferried her back to the dwelling she shared with Alexander.
Upon her return, Ava's strength ebbed away, causing her to collapse onto the plush bed in her room. The previous night had been restless, and the fatigue was now claiming its due. As she clutched the marriage certificates, Alexander's name imprinted on the paper caught her eye, and tears welled up unbidden.
The necessary documents were finally within Ava's grasp. It was time to alert Alexander, to inform him that they could proceed with the divorce as planned that very day.
However, her attempt to reach him was met with an automated response, "Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently busy. Please try again later." Her subsequent attempts yielded the same result.
Assuming Alexander was preoccupied, Ava decided to wait another half hour. Yet, when she tried once more, she found his phone had been switched off. The realization left her slightly taken aback.
Was he intentionally evading her calls? There was no need for such drastic measures. A twinge of annoyance pricked her, prompting her to send him a text: [I've got the documents. Call me back ASAP so we can go through with the divorce.]
As the day wore on, lunchtime came and went, but Alexander remained silent. Ava tried calling him again, only to be met with the same disheartening result.
Growing frantic, she dialed his assistant, Felix. This call, at last, connected.
"Felix, where's Alex?" she inquired without preamble. "I can't seem to get through to him."
"Mr. Mitchell? Oh, he's on vacation," Felix replied nonchalantly.
"What do you mean vacation? Where has he gone?" Ava pressed, her voice laced with urgency.
"I'm not really sure. His plans are confidential. He mentioned he wants no disturbances for a while."
"Is he vacationing alone?" Ava probed further.
"Well..." Felix hesitated, an awkward chuckle escaping him.
"Do you need him for something, Mrs. Mitchell?"
From Felix's hesitation, Ava deduced that Alexander wasn't on a solo trip. "Did he take Isabella with him?"
"Yes, Mrs. Mitchell. Is there something urgent you need from Mr. Mitchell?"
A surge of anger washed over Ava. Her headache intensified as she clutched the bedsheets, her teeth grinding in fury.
Alexander, this was way out of line!
Ignoring her calls, shutting off his phone, and going on vacation with Isabella—she could hardly fathom how much further this man could push her.
Struggling to regain her composure, she managed to say, "Yes, I have an important matter to discuss with him. Can you get ahold of him?"
"Mrs. Mitchell, I can't reach Mr. Mitchell either. His phone is off, and he's already taken care of work matters. He might be off the grid for a while."
Ava was seething and anxious, but Felix was of no help. With no other options, she ended the call.
'Perhaps I should call Isabella.'
Reluctantly, Ava dialed Isabella's number. Surely, if Isabella knew of Alexander's divorce plans, she would have him crawling back to Ava.
However, after dialing, she found out Isabella's phone was off, just like Alexander's.
'Are the two of them trying to enjoy their own little world, not wanting anyone to disturb them? It's all so lovey-dovey. Even newlyweds on their honeymoon wouldn't need to be this secretive!'
Ava was beside herself with rage. She had finally obtained the documents. Acquiring them again would be next to impossible. However, with Alexander gone, she couldn’t proceed with the divorce.
That afternoon, her grandmother called to ask if she had replaced her lost ID card and to send the marriage certificates if she had.
Ava found herself stalling, claiming she hadn't gotten around to replacing it yet.
Scarlett urged her to expedite the process, and Ava, bereft of any real options, grudgingly agreed.
