Chapter 883 It Was too Late to Change Anything
What really twisted the knife in her heart was that, deep down, she felt a flicker of happiness hearing those words. Alexander came looking for her—did that mean he couldn't get over her? Maybe Madison was just a pawn in his game?
But now, it was too late to change anything. That flicker of happiness got snuffed out by cold, hard reality. There was no way she and Alexander could ever be a thing again, so she had to hit him where it hurt and make him back off.
"Alexander, you just can't help but mess with William, can you? Yeah, I picked William last time. Hate me all you want, do whatever, but leave him out of it! He's got nothing to do with this! William's a victim too; he almost got hurt. Blame me and hit me if you want to vent. Just leave him alone, okay?"
Alexander's fists were clenched, his heart feeling like it was being shredded. Every single time, Ava stood up for William. Every. Single. Time. Without even asking why.
Alexander saw that smug, victorious grin on William's face.
He held the kid like he was rubbing it in.
Alexander knew he was done for, completely and utterly.
"Ava," Alexander's voice was rough, "I went to the restroom first and William followed. Don't you wonder why he followed? Why did we end up fighting? Every time you think it's my fault, why don't you think it's William who started it with deliberate provocation?"
"What did he do to provoke you?" Ava asked.
"Would you even believe me if I told you? You always believe William, even if the proof is right there. You forgive him, no questions asked!"
"I don't," Ava shot back instinctively.
"Yes, you do. You've done it before," Alexander said, dead serious.
"I..." Ava suddenly didn't know what to say.
She couldn't help but think back to what had happened before.
She had believed William without question, and in the end, William admitted he had faked a fall to frame Alexander.
She was shocked, wondering how William could do something like that. She was furious.
But in the end, she forgave William because he sincerely apologized and admitted his mistake. He came clean on his own.
But was this really William's fault too?
William's brow furrowed tightly, and he immediately stepped in front of Ava. "Ava, don't listen to him."
He glared at Alexander fiercely. "Alexander, you're slandering me. Got any proof?"
"I have no proof," Alexander said. "The restroom's a great spot, no cameras, unlike last time in the restaurant where it caught you being sneaky, framing me. If it weren't for that footage, you probably wouldn't have admitted it to Ava, right? You're smart, knowing the evidence was solid, so you fessed up first!"
William's face turned particularly sour.
"Don't twist things around. Ava, don't believe him. I admit that incident was my fault, but this time it's all on Alexander. He just wants to mess up what we have."
Ava turned to look at William. "Tell me the truth, why did you two fight, William? Please, just tell me the truth, okay?"
Her first reaction was to blame Alexander, and it was because of past experiences.
