Chapter 770 What Is Her Scheme?
Hearing Mia apologize, William felt something was off.
"Is she trying to set me up? Or does she have some hidden agenda?" he wondered.
She was acting weird, like a different person. Yesterday, she was ready to tear him apart, and now she looked all ashamed.
He suspected she had ulterior motives.
William thought she might be plotting something, so he couldn't trust her sudden change.
"I know you hate me. Don't bother pretending. As long as Ava cares about me, that's enough."
Seeing Mia like this annoyed him. It made him uncomfortable, even a bit soft-hearted.
He'd rather she stayed mean and kept cursing him.
Now, with her acting all nice, it felt like a facade.
"Yeah," Mia said with a smile. "Ava cares about you. You two are more than just friends."
"Ava and I are married, not just friends," William said. "No matter how much you hate me, Ava and I are still a couple. I don't know why you're saying this, but you must have a motive."
"I have no motive," Mia explained. "I just hope Ava doesn't see Alexander anymore. They've had too many issues, and I've seen it all. Alexander hurt her deeply back then. It's better if they don't meet."
Seeing Mia's sincere expression, William was half-convinced. "Really? You said yesterday Alexander wasn't in the ward. Where is he then?"
"He's in a safe place," Mia said. "I just felt Ava didn't need to be involved with him anymore, so I didn't tell her the truth. Isn't this good for you?"
William said coldly, "Yes, it's good for me, but coming from you, it's strange. A woman who called me a bastard is now speaking for me. It's really odd."
"William, I..."
Mia's head hung low, her cheeks burning with shame. Her eyes darted away, and her lips trembled.
She couldn't believe she had said such harsh words back then.
She had never spoken so harshly in her life, but she said them to her own son.
Hearing Mia call him William, William frowned even more. "Your affectionate tone is making me wonder if you have an ulterior motive."
"No, I would never plot against you," Mia said anxiously.
"Why do you seem like a different person? Did my father say something to you? What's your relationship with him anyway? I always felt you two knew each other."
"Yes, your father did tell me some things," Mia said helplessly. "He threatened me to apologize to you, or he wouldn't let me off. He really cares about you."
William stared at her suspiciously, feeling she was lying, but what she said made sense. It was possible Dalton had indeed threatened her.
"William, no, Mr. Bennett." Even though she wanted to call him that, it still sounded harsh to William.
