Chapter 42 Dialing the Number

Ava had nothing particular to do, so she went to the old Mitchell family home a bit earlier, to accompany her grandmother and chat with her.
Since she arrived early, her in-laws hadn't come yet, and neither had Alexander.
In the hall, Ava laughed and talked with her grandma. Even if she felt troubled inside, she always managed to keep her grandma smiling happily.
"You child, you always know how to cheer your grandma up, smooth-talking just like a cunning fox," said Scarlett as she fondly patted her granddaughter-in-law's hand.
"Where did that come from, Grandma? You're calling me a fox now? I'm not speaking to you anymore," Ava retorted playfully.
"But you are a little fox, haha," Scarlett laughed.
Suddenly, something came to her mind. "Right, didn’t you graduate recently? I'll find you a job at the company. Just tell Grandma what kind of work you want to do."
"There’s no need, Grandma. I should look for a job on my own. I don't want to rely on family connections; I want to rely on my own efforts."
"Ava, Grandma admires your independence, but when you have connections to depend on, don't waste them. Society is complicated, and Grandma doesn’t want you to suffer."
She doted on Ava very much, but she wasn’t the same with Alexander.
Scarlett was strict with him; she made him start from the bottom and set many harsh tests for him.
"Grandma, I should face setbacks and experience hardships. That way, I’ll value what I've fought hard to achieve."
"But..." Scarlett wanted to say more, but Ava interrupted her, "Grandma, remember the internship I got during college? I found a job on my own, but not even two months into it, you interfered and messed it up."
"Ah..." Scarlett felt awkward. "Grandma didn’t mean to ruin your job. That company wasn't good, and those people were bullying you. Grandma was standing up for you."
"Grandma, one always encounters such people in the workplace. I can handle it. You protect me too much."
At the time, Ava was being scolded by her boss, who threw documents at her just as Scarlett went to see her granddaughter-in-law. Having witnessed this and hearing coworkers speak ill of Ava, the old lady lashed out.
Everyone knew that this old lady was not someone to be trifled with. The entire company ended up apologizing to her.
Because of that incident, Ava felt too embarrassed to continue working there, so she resigned. However, to complete her internship, she could only intern at a company under the SK flag.
But Grandma checked in on her every other day, forbidding anyone to bully her. Everyone in the company treated her with the utmost respect, almost as if she were a VIP or celebrity.
"Alright, I know I were wrong." Actually, Scarlett understood her logic, but she just wanted to protect Ava. She couldn't help but be biased towards Ava.
Scarlett glanced at the time, "Why hasn't Alex come yet? That's not like him at all."
"Grandma, it's normal for Alex to be late because of work."
"Can't he come an hour or two earlier? And what's more, why does he have to do everything himself? What are his subordinates for? If he can't delegate tasks to his subordinates and have to do everything himself, he's not a good leader."
Scarlett was strict with Alexander. No matter what Alexander did, she could find fault with it. If he wasn't busy, Grandma would probably say he was irresponsible.
Alexander had a lot of responsibilities, so she had to constantly push him to improve; she never let him relax.
"Ava, give Alex a call and ask when he's coming."
"Should I call him?" A nervous laugh escaped Ava’s lips, "Grandma, why don't you call him? I'm sure he'll come right away."
She and Alexander were at odds right now; how could she talk to him?
"What's the matter? You're a couple; isn't it normal for you to call him?" Suspicion flashed in Scarlett's eyes, "Did you two have a fight?"
Ava quickly took out her cell phone, "No, Grandma, I'll call him right now."
Afraid of arousing Grandma's suspicion, she had no choice but to pluck up the courage and dial Alexander's number.
