Chapter 479 Unbearable Pain

Dalton and Hailey, after listening to Brandon's words, both fell into silence.

Hailey glanced at Dalton and opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something. However, in the end, she said nothing.

Dalton had never shown his vulnerable side in front of anyone, even now when his son was still in the operating room, his life hanging in the balance.

He just remained expressionless, then said to Hailey and Brandon, "I'm going to the restroom."

Dalton turned and left.

Hailey folded her arms, leaning against the wall, letting out a sigh. "I never anticipated such a turn of events."

Hailey didn't appear to be heartbroken, but her expression was indeed heavy. If viewed as a stranger, her reaction might seem exaggerated. However, as William's mother, her response seemed somewhat calm.

Brandon took a step forward and asked, "Where did you and Dalton go? How is the situation?" Hailey forced a smile. "What else could we do? We were silent for a while after arriving, but then we started talking. It's been many years, and we haven't had a proper conversation. Finally, when we were about to communicate, William had an accident. We were called back."

"You will have another chance next time after dealing with William's situation."

"Can this situation really be resolved?" Hailey said, "William is in this state now. I don't want to think of the worst-case scenario, but we have to be prepared. If the doctor comes out and tells us he died on the operating table, what should we do?"

Observing Hailey's composed demeanor, Brandon experienced a momentary illusion, as if William were not her biological child. Her calmness seemed somewhat uncharacteristic of a mother who deeply loved her son.

Or perhaps Hailey's maternal love was different from that of ordinary people. She wasn't someone who exaggerated her emotions.

Brandon said heavily, "If there's really no way, then we can only let nature take its course. We will grieve for a while, but we must continue our life afterwards."

"Yes," Hailey said, "I also want a different life."

Brandon asked, "What do you mean by that?"

Hailey exclaimed, "Brandon, I know you've been nudging Dalton all along, hoping he'd treat me better, care for me more, and love me more. But after all these years, we've exhausted all conceivable approaches. I don't want him to feel compelled to pretend under your influence. This time, with the trip you arranged for us, I saw it as our last chance and one final attempt from the outset. If it doesn't work out, so be it. Yet, before we even began, William encountered trouble, and we hurried back. It feels like a sign, telling me to cease trying, for it's futile."

Brandon fell silent for a moment and asked, "So what are you thinking now?"

Hailey said, "I will start arranging for a divorce."

"Have you really made up your mind?" Brandon asked with a furrowed brow.

Hailey nodded. "Yes, I've been unwilling to believe that my dream is really about to end, and I've been afraid to take that step. But now, I've thought it through."

Brandon sighed softly. Although he had always wanted to protect her marriage, since she had made up her mind, he couldn't say anything more. After all, it was her life. If she wasn't happy, he couldn't force her to continue. It would only make her suffer unbearable pain.
