Chapter 238 All Ears
Steward Lukas shook his head again, "The old lady said she doesn't want to see you, Mrs. Mitchell. You should stay away for a while."
Ava balled her fists and suddenly started to cry.
Upon seeing Ava's tears, Steward Lukas was taken aback.
"Mrs. Mitchell, please don't cry. We can talk this out."
"I am trying to talk to you, but... but Grandma doesn't want to see me, and it's breaking my heart." Ava kept her head down, crying harder.
Her sorrow was genuine, rendering her tears all the more poignant and stirring sympathy.
The butler was in a state of panic.
Right then, a cell phone ringtone sounded.
The butler pulled out his phone, "Hello, ma'am."
Hearing the term "ma'am," Ava understood her grandmother was calling the butler. Her crying intensified, perhaps deliberately to be heard by the person on the other end of the line.
"Okay."
After hanging up, the butler turned to Ava, "Mrs. Mitchell, the lady of the house invites you in. She's waiting in her room."
Overwhelmed with relief and joy, Ava quickly dashed upstairs.
The elderly lady was sitting in a lounge chair on the balcony when Ava Anderson cautiously approached her, "Grandma, I made these little treats for you with my own hands. Please, have a taste."
The truth was, Ava Anderson wasn't great in the kitchen; she'd learned by following videos online.
The old lady let out a sigh and said flatly, "Just set them down."
Her voice was indifferent, lacking the warmth she used to show Ava Anderson.
Ava felt her heart race like a school kid in trouble, not daring to look up as she faced her elder.
After she placed the treats on the table, she stood beside the old woman, head bowed, not daring to speak.
"What's with all the fuss you made about coming here, crying and making a scene? Now that you're by my side, why have you clammed up?"
"Grandma, let me explain about yesterday. I—" Ava attempted to clear things up.
She was supposed to explain, but for some reason, she froze, unsure where to begin.
"What are you spacing out for? Weren't you going to explain? Go on," the elderly lady said, all ears.
Taking a deep breath, Ava began, "Last night, I did have a fight with Alex, but there's been a misunderstanding between us."
"What misunderstanding? You spent the night with another man? Is that not true?"
"Grandma, it's true, I did spend the night at another man's place."
The old woman gripped the armrest beside her and turned away.
Noticing a slight change in her grandmother's expression, Ava continued, "But it's not what you think. His name is William Bennett, we're just good friends, and he's been helping me out lately."
"Oh, is that so?" Scarlett coldly asked. "So that justified spending the night there?"
"Grandma, nothing happened between us. I was just feeling really down, and he kindly offered to keep me company so I wouldn't be alone with my thoughts."
"It seems he really cares about you. But why didn't you come to me then?" Scarlett asked with sadness in her voice.
She adored her granddaughter-in-law and was hurt that Ava hadn't turned to her in her time of need.
Knowing Ava didn't want to worry her, the reality still stung Scarlett deeply.
"I'm sorry, I was wrong."
Ava Anderson found it hard to explain. No matter what, the fact remained she had gone to William Bennett's place, and while nothing untoward happened, she was still a married woman.
"So that's it? You admitted fault? Weren't you going to explain? Wasn’t there a misunderstanding?" Scarlett pressed.
